Just as I relax from Christmas, Valentines comes a-knocking and it's my job to wooo the special lady in my life. I could randomly pick a hotel that looks nice and book it but I'm after recommendations from people that have stayed in a hotel. My 2 requirements are that it's 4-star and it would be nice if it was within suitable distance of the Embankment Pier.

Thanks. :D

The Grange near Tower Hill is a big hotel where the England Cricket team always stay when they play at the Oval. It's 1 minute walk from Tower Hill tube. Some of the rooms look out over a courtyard, but if you are lucky enough to be the England head coach this is the view you get from your suite at the top of the hotel, and I'm sure the smaller rooms below have a similar outlook. The Embankment is walking distance.

The Embankment may be but its MILES away from the Embankment Pier - its all the way down at Tower Bridge.

Cant help on the Hotel thing tho.

Except to ask why doing exactly the same as 90% of the guys in the country are doing makes it a Special Day, why due to this you should spend way over the odds, and why you need to buy her affection.

And yes, I AM being grumpy :p

Hi,

I've stayed HERE (http://www.marriott.fr/hotels/travel/lonch-london-marriott-hotel-county-hall/)
It's a Marriott as opposed to something more exclusive, but it's right at the heart of things, and when I went there it was really good. OK I'm easily pleased and was half cut most of the time.

Mr Grumpy SK is right though, it is quite expensive but everything half decent round there is really. Anything not really expensive is really terrible. If you don't spend the money it won't be special, more likely especially dire.

Have a look.

Why does it have to be a good hotel? It's not like you'll be bothered about the view or facilities, you won't leave the bed for two days ;)

The Montague on Ruskin St, just off Russell Square. Very nice. Bit of a hike to the Embankment but that's what the tube and taxis are for.

The Halkin or 41 are great, maybe not close enough. Halkin is pricey but do a trawl on the usual booking sites. The Tower Hotel right next to Tower Bridge is woeful though. That's about all I got but you can have it! If you wanted cheap then I'm told that the Lenny Henry one right net to the Eye is actually pretty good, they're never going to be luxury though.

The link doesn't work for me but I imagine it the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge. I stayed there for a couple of days last year and it's a very funky hotel, if a little expensive. I think the one bed suite room with a terrace was between £300 and £400 a night, you can get a normal room B&B for about £150 though.

Don't go to the Cumberland Hotel, opposite Marble Arch. The rooms a really nice, but noisy. The reception area is a work of art, very very modern, but oh so gay  Its expensive, but expensive don't necessarily mean good. Breakfast was grand though!

It has Gary Rhodes restaurant incorporated in it.

No idea where it is in relation to where you want to be, but is it very good I suppose for Hyde Park and shopping<<for that bit its important as far as laydeez are concerned :)

hmmm ok....its not actually bad...so I suppose I'd use it again! haha

Cumberland is pretty decent. Just off Oxford street, right next to Marble Arch. Tube and open top buses right outside. Good for shopping, sight seeing and very easy to get to Covent Garden and the West End.

We stopped here and ended up doing a pub crawl from Covent Garden to Leicester Square before falling into China Town and a really decent restaurant.

Lol what are the chances. If you want a quiet room, go for one on the inside. You also get the benefit or looking into other people's rooms at night.......or them looking into yours Oi Oi.

Aye....thats the one. TBH like I said, thinking about it, I've slept in worse places, and its soooo perfectly placed for SHOPPPPPPING......and wining and dining. Perhaps 2 years ago at Christmas wasn't perhaps the best time for hotel experience!

The rooms are exceptionally clean, I'm picky about that. Also theres an NCP underground carpark round the corner which is very convenient, IIRC you got a discount or weekend pass for that from the hotel....bit hazy in the memory.

Was spotless and great breakfasts.

We paid about £15 for 2 Ameretto's but they didn't measure them they just nearly half filled a good sized brandy glass.

I just get on a a night bus/train and sleep in the comfort of my own bed :)

The joys of living in (well near enough) London :)

Took me 25 mins to get home from Victoria at 1am the week before Xmas :p

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions, very much appreciated. I'm currently leaning towards the Marriott Hotel County Hall. The only issue is I found a massive snag in my plan. My plan was train down to London, check into hotel, dump bags and do a cruise that runs from 12 till 2pm.

The issue I have is most hotels I've looked at won't let you check in till 2 or 3pm which would mean lugging our bags around. I then thought about doing the cruise on the Saturday but we still have the same issue because you have to be checked out by 12 which is when the cruise starts. Anyone got any smart ideas on what I could do with our bags while we cannot check in and after we checked out?

I really don't want to drive down but it might be the case if I cannot think of any better idea.

Oh and to any of my facebook friends, please don't mention a word of this on there please. Thanks. :D

Most hotels have a luggage room where you can leave luggage before/after you check in. Sorted.

There is a lovely Marriot at High Holburn (Chancery Court). Walking distance of everything.
But I think you'd struggle to beat the newly refurbished St Pancras - might depend on whether you like George Gilbert Scott architecture tho, and it's a little pricey. Nice breakfast mind!
