My tax runs out this month so i'll be stopping for a few months until it warms up abit :/ Just wondering if anyones lasting it out this winter lol
Is this a serious thread .
It's like 8 c in the morning .
I agree with NtecUK, i wouldn't even class this as winter! It's already getting darker later an the average temperature is mild to say the least. I've been out on my bike plenty of times over December and this month, and i'm a fair weather rider which says a lot.

Pack it up? I've had to take the train to work yesterday and today because of people's birthdays in the evening. Already going mad - I think it would take a lot of snow and ice to make me stop riding.
On another note, anyone notice the trees starting to blossom already? They're seriously confused
I'm still using summer gloves :).
It might get colder in the coming months.
But until then its savin petrol ,time and more fun on 2 wheels.
i lasted through winter LAST YEAR, its too bloody warm in all my winter thermal clobber, im wearing my summer stuff :)

Our lilac bush had new buds on in December...very odd. And I think Daffodils were flowering in Wales then too. It has been very mild, and if a Daffodil doesn't think it should pack up for winter then you most certainly shouldn't be, ya pansy :-P
I'm just grateful it's nowhere near as cold as it was this time last year, I've been out on the bike throughout this winter, it's great!

Still riding too. I am a right wuss and feel the cold easily while riding, but I'm still wearing summer gloves too. Whenever it's been dry for a few days, I've been out on the bike. Get it taxed and get riding! :)

What Winter? Have we had one?
What Winter? Have we had one?
We did have one frosty morning in December I think!
Had made plans to do all sorts of work to my SV this winter when the weather got bad, just can't bring myself to take her off the road even for a few days while the weather is this good.

I've just switched back to my summer jacket. If it gets colder again I may need the winter one again, but it's been lovely riding weather the last couple of days.
Do people really stop riding for winter...in England? I suppose I do if it gets really icy/snowy but that's mainly because it's just about impossible to stay on a bike in those conditions.
Nothing has stopped me riding yet, this weather is great at the moment, get out on the bike and enjoy while you can.

So I guess I'm the only woos.. I must clarify, though, that I live in eastern Europe and that, although very warm as well, it's only 2C in the afternoon and I've not been able to purchase winter clothing.. I'm gonna get myself a Teiz PowerShell in about 2 months, but 'till then, I still have a 1 month suspension to serve and money to gather for a new bike in spring, so these factors to count a lot...

went out for a ride yesterday.
I found out that the Barclays cash tills card recesses are just too deep for me to get my card back with winter gloves on. I tried and tired and it swallowed my card, I just couldn't get the traction. If I had been a woman (or had a brain) I'm sure I'd have just taken my glove off but I was certain I could do it!
Beautiful day for a ride

i normally use it through the winter so just seeing what other people do. It is very mild at the moment but i hear the end of the week isgonna be frosty so get your winter gloves back out chaps lol. Reason i might sorn it is i gotta do some bits to it for summer but don't wanna be working on the bike when its icey :s
Anyone know of any good biking events this year i never really go to any as i don't know anyone with a bike :(

Noticed the daffs had started flowering on the roundabout outside the office last week (Bracknell) when I got back to work after Chrimbo.
Even a complete wuss like me got out on the bike at the weekend. Felt SO much better for doing so.
Nipped out to a club meeting last night, and spent a good bit of time beforehand taking the liners out of my textiles. Got back around 9ish with the trousers vents open.
Going to get cold the android weather says -2*C on sat..
Don't look too good for the Dafodils.

Getting grumpy - beautiful today and can't ride because Marilyn is locked up in the garage (slight V5 & tax issues, probably one for another thread). In general though, unless it's icy, or the wind is so strong that the rain is actually horizontal, I can't think of a good reason not to.

What do you mean by 'special anti-freeze'? My 'normal stuff', diluted 50/50 with distilled water, works down to -36 degrees.

The OAT stuff can be useful as it lasts longer, 5 year intervals on it. Mine never does as I find it easier to be lazy and remove the rad when doing valve check.

Went out today. Road was damp and there was grit everywhere, so rode slowly (no fun), plus now I know my calipers are full of corrosive crap. I should hose them down, but I'm too lazy. Also almost got killed on a roundabout at the end of the ride, but it was my fault cos I didn't look properly! Too cold to maintain concentration for more than an hour on a boring slow ride by myself.
Gonna wait till it warms up a few degrees now.

Brr was nippy today, a very thick frost out but roads were well gritted so just took it steady and smooth. I have heard today there is talk of snow in February...:pale:
Er dont like the look of this:-
"in terms of some true cold and snow across Scotland and northern regions of the UK. Although once again there is likely to be some periods of moderation at times, and this is most likely to be reflected in any areas further south.
2. February should prevail further in comparison to January, and this is when I feel we are likely to see the most severe part of this winter. A cold start to spring 2012 is also possible, with some especially heavy and widespread snowfalls across Britain and parts of Ireland."

Last year I whacked out the scooter through the snow, it's brilliant fun to rag and side it around in the leathers!
after 3 weeks of trying to find another car Im getting fed up of looking, but even if I did get one, unless it snows, I`ll still prob use the bike for work.

Nope, still riding.
Me too but almost did a little poo as the back wheel went sideways as i headed off the drive this morning.
I got off the drive and to the end of the road before turning back to grit it just in case the Mrs/wee man found the frost equally slippy.
My bottom was twitching like a rabbits nose round every corner until I reached the main roads. Not sure why but the gritters conveniently bypassed every minor road I use on route to work so just to test my theory I came home a different way and sure as eggs is eggs the grit fairies have sprinkled their magic dust on pretty much every road nearby but the ones I use.
Just hoping the milder weather forecast comes soon.

You can definately feel the slippery roads in the mornings. Dont know if its front and back but the whole bike feels twitchy. Could be the cold engine as well I suppose. Only one way to get good at this and that`s to ride all the time. I saturated the bike in ACF50 about 2 weeks ago and now its just gonna be left till march.

Na mate, takes all sorts, you get from your bike whatever you want, be it a commuting tool, leisure play thing or indeed those that merely having it in the garage is enough, to some it's a pickup/put down things, others their single form of everyday transport, or perhaps a thrill just for going round a track, and ever so rarely these days you get that passion that goes through to the marrow.
yeah it will be a tad chilly I'd expect, but then there are advantages to riding up there at that time, not only do you improve your riding skills, you also have less traffic, an a degree of solitude it's hard to get at any other time, I prepare well and never push beyond the limitations I'm aware of; despite what people may think, it's not all bloody mindedness and being stubbon, I actually find it fun.
And of course when I go back in summer, those same roads are considerably easier, which gives me greater scope for speed and hazard awareness.
Cheers Mark.

So you need to do that kind of holiday in February, or ride your bike every day in winter, to have a passion for bikes that goes through to the marrow? Not sure if that's what you are insinuating or not. I would hope not as passion is not something you can measure. To say that would be like saying a man who works offshore loves his wife and kids less than a man who sees them every day. Being lucky enough to be able to do the miles you do, doesn't make you any more passionate about bikes and biking than any of the other people in any of the other scenario's you mention.

Ralph, I really don't think it was meant that way, I think most people that ride are passionate about their bikes or lets face it we wouldn't be riding, if I have a chance to take the car in winter I do, having said that I also love riding in the winter but that's mainly because my kit keeps me warm, there's nothing quite like a cold to mild dry winters day for riding, love it, most people don't have the luxury of 2 vehicles at their disposal, so they ride all year round, that's not to say those who ride summer/spring/autumn are any less passionate or any worse at riding that the all year rider.
Although a policeman did say to me not so long ago that he tends to find fair weather riders have a lower stamina than all weather riders, not sure how true that is?
missyburd
18-01-12, 10:28 AM
I didn't read it that way Ralph, more that everyone demonstrates passion for their bikes in many different forms, and that that passion may stem from only a short time on a bike or from everyday use. Not sure it's a rare thing though!
And Fruity, glad it tickled you ;)

I'm not sure if it was meant that way either, I'm just checking.
Lower stamina, or they haven't got the right gear? I don't find winter riding requires any more stamina, if you have the right gear.

I got asked a question the other day. Does P really need a car for work? Can he not just use the bike?. Surely he can do without?
Well.....when you get old, and have severely knackered limbs, if you constantly go out on a bike in the cold, you suffer on the bike, suffer all day at work, and suffer when you are home again. Theres nothing like watching a cripple popping pills and pretending everything is fine:rolleyes:. I suppose theres nothing better than sitting in an office feeling sick to the core, because of the pain.
rictus01
18-01-12, 11:31 AM
just on the off chance you genuinely don't understand what I ment Ralph, I'll indulge a little.
the line you highlighted refers to those that used to make up most of biking sometime back and are less common now, although those new to biking are often in that group for a while at least, call them "lifestyle bikers" if you want or whatever, but mainly a level of enthusiasm and commitment to rival my own, we share that and I tend to get along with that sort to a greater degree than the rest, it's where I choose to place my major interest.
As to your other point, yes the guy working off shore has made a conscious decision to limit family contact for his job, and that'll be reflexed it changes to the family each time he comes home, for example my first son I was away for about 9 month of the year for a couple of years and my second I was home every night, do I love them the same? being honest I'd say neither one "less" but there is a difference and I know I can never get back all the "first's" I missed with my eldest, that are shared with the other, and as I wasn't there didn't support my wife in the same way, having done both I know which I'd consider a better father, but then I think most would, as most poeple don't work off shore.
I don't consider myself "Lucky" to do the mileage I do, it's my choice, I could as easily spend my money on Xbox/ps3 things or anything else, but instead use it for bikes and petrol, likewise I take my holidays where and when I want, mine just always involve bikes and riding, I get no fun out of sunning on a beach and never really have.
One last point I'll address, like all things "practise makes perfect" someone who rides without the limitations of "where and when" will do considerably more miles and be far more experienced than for example a sunny sunday rider, and like most things stamina and skill will be greater to.
Cheers Mark.

Yeah as you well know Lou, I understand that all to well myself, still being old and broken is considered "lucky" by some so I understand......;)
I guess I should.be sensible.and get a feet forward scooter, or cruiser bike.
Nope stick with re living me ufe ;)

Oh done that as well, the scooter thing at least, and dependent on the outcome of an operation a few years back, it looked like I'd have little choice but to go "feet forwards" even to the point of test riding a Victory 8 ball, nice enough bike, but it did make me feel even older, fortunately the OP went well and I got back a greater degree of knee bend than was expected, so I got a superduke instead.....:)

No, Mark I genuinely didn't know if you were trying to insinuate, what it read like you may be trying to insinuate (which I would have disagreed strongly with), which is why I posed the response as a question.
Where I consider you lucky to do the mileage you do, is not about money. I couldn't find the time to do that mileage, but if money grew on trees and life had panned out differently for me (not that I'd regret my wife and child for a moment, but lets just say I'd never met her), I'd like nothing more than to be spending my days sitting in the saddle of a motorbike.
I think the emergence of the 'lifestyle biker' and the drop in numbers of 'in the blood bikers' is the drop in use of bikes for transport. People used to use bikes because they couldn't afford a car, kids grew up around bikes, and come 16 or 17 there wasn't any question about getting a car, it was two wheels you started on from day one.

Oh I've no doubt there is a degree of the generation gap there, I hang around with some really old boys (VMCC and that sort of thing) and they have 60-70 years experience of bikes, but seldom ride these days if at all, a wonderful mine of information I always enjoy chatting to (but beat them over the head with it and they would still have trouble identifying an ECU), I guess one day I'll be the same and no longer be able to ride, I've done the married with kids thing, both the boys have been pillion at times and in fact the bike time enabled me to deal with other aspects of life better, to the point Beth will tell me to go for a ride as I'm a grumpy old sod..:)
you're right it is time as well, but then as I said it's a choice, I get a lot less time I'm actually able to physically ride these days, but do as much as I can when able, so focused more than lucky I'd say, but then that's all perspective I suppose ?
Cheers Mark.
