Hi, been hovering here for a while as i knew i was going to get an sv650s. Well i bought my sv650 from someone on this site who very kindly reserved the bike for me while i got the money together :).
Been riding since i was 20 but took a few years break to finance a car and education. Came back with vengeance, took my Mod 1 and 2, passed 1st time. I have a Gopro hd hero 2 so will be uploading videos to youtube in the future :).
Heres the bike which i've nick named Sonic ;).

I'm situated in Wales :), left the bike at parents till i get a new front tyre as it's bold, no grip at all. Was slipping everywhere yesterday but got home safely no thanks to the rain.
Is this model particular to the grand candy blue then? 2005?
im heading into wales tomorrow, going for a ride through betws y coed and ogwen,

Storms....prob cheaper than Bridgestones, plus very noob inspiring. Lots of threads in the hardware section I'll point you in the direction of to read about tyres. http://forums.sv650.org/forumdisplay.php?f=138
Lots of 'experienced' riders of alsorts of bikes to review them in that section.
Its all personal preference, Bridgestones are 'ok', the OH has used them many times on his ZZR14, but has found something cheaper, and better this time...I just prefer Storms, I've had them on all three of my bikes, and have no negativity from them, I aren't exactly a knee down action type of person, but I do have a bike that shoes need to be correct on, or it could end in tears for me. As I say its personal preference, and pocket size of course.
As for Scorpion, you should be ok, baffleless, I had one on the old SV, never failed, they aren't particularly loud on tickover with it missing. ..but don't take my word for it. It would help if you know what Scorpion can it is, as they;re all different.

Michelin Power Road 3s are supposed to be very good too.
Tried Storms and they are ok but not as brilliant as some would like to make out - maybe because they haven't tried the latest crop of sport-touring tyres - I have had a couple of scares on them in wet conditions. I've got Bridgestone BT023s and they are excellent and lasting well on the FJR1300 (6,000 + miles so far and still 3mm of tread left), also have Michelin Pilot Road 3s (4,000 miles so far and look unworn) on the Versys and as good as they are, the BT023s give me better feedback and feel more confidence inspiring. Neither tyre has slipped out on me this winter, but I just feel safer on the Bridgestones, which is weird because I am more of a Michelin buyer than Bridgestone.

I took my fella out as pillion the other month, he's about 3 - 4 stone heavier than me (I think). Front end went rather light, steering took a bit of getting used to but as long as the gear changes, stops and starts remained smooth, he seemed to enjoy it. But then he's used to riding and having pillions, I'm yet to take someone who's not been on a bike before

You'll be alright with fatty on the back. :p Have your first go on the flat in a straight line. You don't want to be dealing with t-junctions on steep hills or mini-roundabouts as your first corner. And make sure you've got pillion cover on your insurance! ;)

Lol ok when you 2 have stopped flirting with each other I have a question. I'm in need of a new front tyre, 120/60/17 or 12/70/17 ? been offered a bridgestone bt023 front for £145 fitted =S
maviczap
21-01-12, 01:29 PM
120/60/17 is the OEM size, I don't know much about how the 120/70/17 profile would change the front end handling
£145 seems a bit steep for a front, unless that includes removal & re fitting the front wheel

OMG guys! finally took the bike this morning to have it's front tyre changed...they said not even half a mil on the tyre, the rear had 15!! psi in...I picked it up from a lovely lad in Birmingham, he had no idea about the tyres either...I was very stupid to think they were fine when I collected, but non the less i got the bike back to my parents (30 mile journey). So this morning i got up early, no rain but roads were wet, got to the garage and also had the LED indicators sorted, which was so easy!.
New shoe on I take it for it's first proper ride without slipping out on each corner. Had so much fun guys :D! felt so much more confident! Took my first GoPro vid too!

You really need to be checking your PSI yourself frequently. At least once per month. It's really important for a lot of safety reasons, and it aint hard! Get yaself a cheap old foot pump from Argos for about £5 if you don't want to spend money. :)

Hi All.
Always wanted to ride a bike but never committed to learning as family and work got in the way, next thing you now i'm in to my late thirties.
Last year my best friend passed his test and there was no way i was going to have him get one up on me so i took the plunge and passed my Mod 1 first time, mod 2 took a second try due to some poor speed limit observation.
I always fancied a SV as a first bike as it looked better than the usual fazer, bandit or hornet suggestions i was getting, and the low seat height was appealing. At 5'9" I wanted to be able to put both feet firmly on the ground.
I got my bike from Ebay from a trusted seller and from all accounts it seems like I got a great bargain and the bike is very sound. Unfortunatly it was a Xmas bargain purchase so not had a chance to get much riding in yet, probably done about a 100miles so far but each time ive been out my confidence is increasing. I also dropped the bike the first time out when trying to turn on a very steep hill. I rolled backwards and flopped to floor when I turned; chipping the end off the clutch lever . I have since got a better handle on the weight and manouverability and am starting to relax and enjoy the riding experience. I find talking out loud about my observations whilst riding helps too keep me relaxed and observant.
As soon as the weather clears up a bit i'll be trying the short commute to work from Rochdale to Manchester.. Can't wait.
