View Full Version : I've been stalking you - Newby
Firstly sorry if this is in the wrong place, the appears to not be an "introduce yourself" section on the forum.
Firstly hi all..
My nickname is Foz, I used to be a keen mountain biker but due to injures and time I don't get to do it as much as I can to justify the cost of the bikes I owned (about £5.5k's worth) so I sold them all and decided to put the money to buying a motorbike and learning.
So here I am with 8 days until my DAS tests and my chosen steed arrived this week.
I've cleaned it up a lot and added a fender extender and a V-system Scottoiler (I plan on using the bike to get to work 12 miles away)
I've stalked the forum while making my choice of bike as I like marks that have an active forum (I also own a Golf Mk4 which has an amazing forum / community) after passing my DAS.
I liked the looks and the SV was recommended as one of the best Post DAS bikes to start on. So here we are photos.
couple of questions while you look.
I have an alarm / immobiliser but no certificate. When insuring i have advised of the brand and model but has anyone ever been asked to produce a certificate of installation or anything similar?
The screen is that a none std item?

Welcome.
Not such a sin - but it's far to clean! You need to pass that DAS and get some muck on it ;).
(and yes, looks standard except for the screen, the hugger, fender extender and removed grab rail).

Yes, I've been asked that recently, I'm with H&R Insurance/KGM. If they want one from you, maybe try getting a quote without the alarm (no idea what difference it makes on the price). Screen doesn't look standard.
Welcome and good luck with the test.

Hello and welcome, nice clean bike you have there, bet you can't wait to get it dirty.

Welcome, nice and clean, looks as though you have "Helibars" fitted more upright riding position (might need insurance declaration).
Enjoy.
JOHN
It's clean as i spent all day today cleaning it :)
Wops, sorry i fitted a rear hugger to when i was fitting the oiler.
I would like a cowl now, I may have to see what the OEM price is as red ones seam rare :(
I'm itching to get my DAS pass, all the gear - no idea and no licence :)
Icanopit - I've not noticed the bars being any different from other SV650's I've sat on. I'll look for a std setup in a photo and compare.
Thanks for all the nice welcomes.

Welcome to the forum sir. Nice looking bike mate. I too started on an SV after completing my DAS course back in 2009. You will have an uber fun on it.
Nice exhaust, tail tidy and a rear seat cowl should be on your wishlist :-)
Enjoy and good luck with the test etc

I bought my SV straight after passing my test in December, I had a couple of months between my CBT and full test on a 125 but no experience other than that. I like the predictability of the SV, it does what I tell it to and the odd occasion where things have gotten a bit scary I've known that it's something I've done, learnt from it and moved on.
On the alarm note I asked for the premium difference with and without and it made no difference at all. I still declared it but they've not asked for a stickycat.

They will ask if you claim, then if you don't have it will be void.
Welcome! I'll also add my "far too clean" comment. Your pic takes me back to when I had my brand new bike delivered ... its never been the same since! It definitely needs some "history" on it, if you know what I mean.
Your test is coming up? Good luck. Also did the DAS route and failed 3 times. On all 3 occasions I used a Honda CB500 which did not suit me. Finally, I took a chance and used my SV650, which I - like you - purchased before passing and until then had sat still for 2 months (apart from late Sunday night jaunt to an empty car park).
SV was far more manageable & needless to say I passed. Take your time, take it steady, anticipate the examiner's instructions but take an extra moment to think before acting (if possible).
As for insurance, Bikeramy is right. They'll generally only want to see all paperwork in the event of a claim but will be very sharp on rejecting one if anything is missing. (Note to self - get those alpha dots).
Good luck with the test.

Welcome mate, that is a nice looking example you've got there.
I dont like red bikes normally but that looks good, keep the wax topped up or it will oxidise.
I doubt these days alarms make the slightest difference, guy on another thread uses tracker and doesnt see a difference in his premiums and thats the most effective theft deterrent imo.
:0) Ola... Welcome to the fold. Clean machine, Looks like a New Bike, but tax disc runs out next month :0/
Enjoy the Bike as they are a cracking Ride :0) Fun Fun Fun to be had :0)

Hello and welcome. As for your sin I did the same and promptly spent two years on a 125! However, my SV is probably the best bike I could have chosen; so pass that test and enjoy your bike as you continue to build your skill base and learn the skills of riding on the open road.
Good luck :D

My Mod 2 test is due on the 15th
i passed my mod 1 with 3 minors.
one for going to slow for the emergency stop
one because he thought i should have used my rear brake more during the figures of 8
one for pulling the clutch slightly during my swerve (in my defence the bite point was right at the start of the lever pull and heaverly worn, on placing my hands on the lever to pull in for the stop i slightly pressed on the lever and rode the clutch)
I'm currently learning on a ER5 not my favourite choice.
sadly my test is in a town i don't know or havent ridden in during my life.
i'll have morning to ride around the place to learn the nasty bits in the town.
I have found i can have the bike re-certified for the alarm, i have just to find a price for this.
i have added wax and ACF 50 to areas that need it.
I've added some red rim tape to the front wheel but need some more to finish the rear off, the Keiti stuff is crap it bubbles and comes off.
i'm currently waiting for the tax renewal to land on the front door :(
Bad point - the bike still has D220 tyres on it :(
Is it bad to say i like the can?
sure it could be shorter.
@shawthing thanks for the heads up about the i've posted to the thread, finders crossed.
Thanks for all the nice replies and welcome messages.

I did my test in completely unfamiliar territory, passed first time (after being on the road for an hour instead of 40 mins) and although it scared me a bit, I don't think it would have made a difference if I had anyway.
It's not important where you do it, although it might make you feel more comfortable in general you might find it distracts you more because you'll be wondering where your examiner is taking you and trying to predict the route instead of concentrating on exactly where you need to go and what your examiner wants you to do. I suppose it helps a little for the independent riding section (you might not get lost and separated from your examiner like I did :-P)
Just relax and enjoy the ride. Remember your lifesavers, especially when setting off, and remember to turn your indies off. Good luck!

Me too passed in Bradford of all places! I wouldn't go there for a jolly thats for sure!
My Mod 2 test is due on the 15th
Bad point - the bike still has D220 tyres on it :(
I wish i had someone to give me this advice so I will pass it on - Get rid of those tyres! They are only good for doing straight up and down riding and will last forever BUT they are rubbish in the wet and not too much better for anything strenuous in the dry. My D220 where as hard as rocks.
... Once you get the tyres sorted, you're gonna want to start thinking about suspension but I'll leave you to look into that a bit more. This is a great place to start so do a search.
Good luck tomorrow.

ok here some actual answers to your questions
1/ yes aftermarket TOURING SCREEN for less wind blast is what you have there
2/ check your reciepts in the docs you got, a bill of payment for professonal instalation is as good as a cert for insurance issues, eg
mr bike dealer
work carried out :alarm install
cost £££££
paid by cash/CC /etc
finally enjoy the bike
dave
Greetings from sunny Donny. Nice shiny bike you have, you just need to get busy with the file to get rid of all those nasty pointy sharp edges, you could cut yourself on those.:D
Good luck with your test tomorrow, I hope all goes well.
"Pointyism" - sad to know that discrimination still exists in this day and age ...
Hello Foz, welcome in!!! By 'Kiddy' you mean Kidderminster???? I'm up the road just beyond Shrewsbury. Meet you at the cafe at Quatt!!! Are you having the Mod 2 here in Shrews???

Good Luck !!!! and welcome
Did you pass or what?
Fingers crossed for you.
H
I failed.
deservedly so IMO.
I'm a bit of a stressed eric when it comes to any exams.
Long and short was I wasn't indicating (when i thought i was).
I would come into a junction flick the indicator and it wouldn't register.
I should have double checked it was working (ASSumed), plain and simple. No excuses not blaming the bike (it didn't happen during my practice hours)
Was it me or my slightly to long thumbed gloves i'll not know most likely a combination of both.
retest fee's (sigh) and more time staring at the bike (gives me a chance to get a cowl :) )
thanks for all the good wishes again.
That's a shame Fozzy. Hopefully you will re book straight away and next time it could be a walk in the park. Better luck next time mate.:(
itching to rebook it.
need to get moving on it tomorrow.
I never posted back.
passed on the 2nd attempt with 3 or 2 minors.
loving being on the road.
just eyeing up some mich pilots 3 to replace the d220's.
anyone want some lightly used D220's :)
congrats mate! glad to hear your enjoying the bike :)
Thanks.
already added a rear cowl, slightly lower seat and adjusted the tps (was over 3500) (just over 2 weeks since i passed).
tyres are the next job (credit card i think at the end of the month) then enjoy..... even more.. :)

Hi and welcome from another lurker. You honestly couldn't have picked a more capable bike for 'just after your test'. Easy to look after, quick enough and predicatble handling. You will have a hoot.
Good luck with your test. If like me you have a few nerves then just remember if you do make a little mistake the examiner may also judge how you put things right. I had it in my head we were going to turn left at a particular junction. "Right at the lights at the next junction" came through my headset. So I indicated left and moved to the left filter :safe: "Right at the lights at the next junction please" again. Then my head clicked, I immediately did a lifesaver look while switching my indicators to right made sure the lane was clear and moved over. Best day of my life up to then when he said I'd passed and nice safe recovery :p
I'm sure others on here have similar tales - hope all goes well!
