View Full Version : Pointy Prices

Unless I'm looking in the wrong place, but how come the price of Pointy's doesn't seem to have dipped out like the Curvy's did?
Example, I bought my (then) 7 year old (W reg) Curvy 4.5 years ago for about £1500, with 7,000 miles on it.
In theory then, all things being equal, you'd expect to see 03/04 maybe even at a push 05 plate Pointy's going for about the same sort of money nowadays, but they're all £2k+.

Got my curvy back for sub £1k.
Laughing all the way to the bank to get the cash and all the way home with the SV.
Looking forward to summer :)

Could be a number of factors. Numbers sold and still on the road, higher (inflation adjusted) sale price and current sale price. Higher demand for pointy's. Etc etc
When shopping around for a new bike earlier this month i saw an 06 with 7k miles and an 07 with 10k miles both advertised for £1700 ono, both with fairing lowers etc. Perhaps due to time of year and chance also.
I think its like with any cars and bikes, because the pointy "new shape" still looks pretty much the same as the ones being sold new today they hold their value better than the "old shape" curvies. Most of the time you would need to look at the number plate to age a pointy, however if its curvy you know its 10 yrs old...

Why is a pointy worth more than an equivalent curvy? James, that's a daft question. Why does a Playboy Bunny cost more than an ugly prostitute? ;-)

Because people are greedy and stupid.
They all claim to know "a guy" who a couple months back sold his SV for 2k, they'll assume that their one is worth the same, regardless of comparable condition/miles/time of year etc etc. If someone happens to be desperate enough then they'll come along and snap it up. Otherwise it'll sit there for months on end until eventually they knock a couple hundred off, and start accepting offers. By the time they actually sell it though its worth even less than it was when first listed, if folk realised this and listed things at priced to sell they'd clear more money for the transaction.
I should know, I listed my 07plate for 4months at 2.2K refusing offers of 2k because i "knew" I could do better. In the end I sold it for £1800 6 months after deciding to sell.

Very true. When I sold my 06 plate for £1500 people thought I was mad, but the reality is it was high mileage, compared to other 06 plates, and had it been in clean original cosmetic condition it might have been worth 2 grand. But it had gravel rash on the nose cone, a dent in the tank, and a few of the panels were a very slightly different colour red following a cosmetic crash damage repair. The only realistic way to bring it back to clean original cosmetic condition and being worth £2k was a full respray which would have cost £400, and it was in need of a rear tyre and a service. £1500 quid was what it was worth.

The other reason for higher used prices generally is the fact that new bike prices are so high.Gone are the days of picking up a brand new last year model ZX6R for five grand, and this translates through the market.

I don't think prices are high a very quick search on ebay.

Fixed for you ;)

£4599 for a Gladius is expensive compared to prices 5 years ago. The faired pointy is not so bad. When I bought mine in May 2006, standard price for an SVS was £3995 and a naked SV was £3695.

As for new prices, I'm going to throw the inflation card out there. Cost of manufacturing process gone up, got to recover the cost somehow.

I can see your point. The Gladius/naked price rise is about the same as the increase in the national minimum wage over the same period (£4.85 to £6.08 ) on those prices also you may have been able and able to negotiate a discounts on them both.
The faired bike though is cheap and this was only a quick search.
It would be interesting to compare new SV prices to its main competitors over the same period, but I've not got the time.
Well I bought both my SV's last year by K5 naked cost me £1500 and my K9 fully faired cost me £2,150. K9 has done 16,000 miles as owener used it to go from home in Guildford to work in London every day plus had a few scratches. The K5 only has 16,000 and just wanted to get shot of it as he was going to buy a car.
If you look at ebay you will see most bikes now are at a fixed price and makes no sense as they are mostly over priced.

Well if you look at it in line with inflation and earnings, Bike magazine reckons new bikes are actually cheaper than they were 10 years ago.
The strength of the Pound against the Yen has got a lot to do with the apparent rise though. In May 2006 1 pound bought 200 odd, now it buys 120 odd.

Or another way to put it:
They cost about £300-500 more than a equivalent Curvy in 2000

Of course they did, that's nothing to do with it. We've already established that an ugly hooker is worth less than a playboy bunny. ;)

Back in 2000 no one paid anything like list prices because of competition from parallel imports and overoptimistic import volumes.Further back in the 90s prices were much higher again as supply was limited. It all ebbs and flows.
