View Full Version : Fortnightly meets - why aren't you there?
It might help us work out why they've died off if people who used to show up post and just why they've not done so. Can't hurt, anyway. Not a witch hunt, just an attempt to work out if we could do things better.
So, my reasons: laziness, time and distance (I'm in London now, not Maidenhead), and it's cold and dark out there. Of the three, laziness is the big one.
Anyone else?
Seems a valid train of thought.
My main reason for not turning up is that there's nobody elsy turning up.
We need to address the situation and get the meets running again. A few rideouts and possibly a bit of camping might help.

Once I get my bike down here I might be along.
PS Where are they held? And when?

In theory, fortnightly on Tuesdays. In practice, it's been a while, hence this thread.

You forgot to add a category - work.
My hours are stupid and Tuesday is one I'm normally in the office, after which I try to go to the gym. So I'm knackered, smelly and very hungry by the time I get home and in no mood to get kitted up for a hop to the pub.
Will try and make a rideout or two if you give us all some notice.

Hmm
lets pick some options here
Bike is Knackered, usually work late, the weather is crap and the dog ate my homework (opps sorry wrong excuse)
The first three work for me
You forgot to add a category
No I didn't. It's not a poll, it's an open question.

I'm lucky and only live down the road in Windsor.
If a few people are meeting then I'm generally happy to pop along.

:smt017I'm new on this forum but it is called Thames valley but in my opinion it is right on the outskirts of that area maybe that's a reason for the lack of people turning up?:smt017
Got another venue in mind ?
We have people in Heathrow (me), Slough, Wycombe and as far out as Brackley...

That reason's been suggested before but I'm more inclined to think it's because a) there's hardly anybody reading or posting here anymore, and b) the ones that do are a bunch of namby-pamby wasters.

1) It's only a week since the last attempt

Oi,enough of the pigtail jokes ;-) I like my hair
I work in Hook now but still live in Oxford, so I'm riding 100miles a day already. The thought of MORE at this time of year is just not good, particularly because my heated gloves have packed in. Ouch, not nice.
When the sun comesout again i will resurrect the fireblade, so might be more inclined to play further from home. The ZZR is thqat dirtythat even i might be embassised to turn up on it... maybe not, but it'sanother excuse.

In answer to the original question. Firstly I have moved. Three times in fact and now live in Amesbury. Work in Hook. It's not exactly a local meet for me anymore. On top of that it is by far cheaper for me to drive the car than ride the bike to work and the time difference (doing legal speeds) between the car and the bike is negligible. Says it all really. The other consideration is the time people arrive at the Shire. I finish work at 3.15. I'm not going to the Shire to sit there for at least two hours waiting for someone else to arrive.
So thats why I don't go to the meets anymore.

How about a meet somewhere more central on say a Sunday morning its only a thought????

We've historically done other stuff, often group rides (for loose values of group) on Sundays. The fortnightly Tuesday at the Shire is just a regular gathering, not the sole opportunity for people to get together.
That said, people rarely bothered to turn up at weekends either. I tried not to take it personally.

The main reason for the post was the fact that no one attends the Tuesday meets someone said that the most that attended last year was (7) I live 50 miles away and would find it hard to justify the distance and find 3 or 4 people there.

And that's the key thing - nobody turns up because nobody turns up.
We had four this week, and that was while the pub was surrounded with snow and ice. I've every intention of popping over if I'm not otherwise engaged, and I got the impression the others present were keen to form a core to at least keep things going. Then the fairweather riders and distance-phobics can turn up to make up the numbers.
FWIW it takes me between 40 and 90 minutes to get to the Shire, depending whether I'm coming from home or work. Fifty miles isn't really that much if it's on open roads.

Sure thing. Just need to workout a time - when is lunch for you? I can go any time within reason. Usually about 12:30 or so.

How about 12:45? We can go to the Raven. I'll be in the car on Monday, Thursday and Friday and (weather dependant) on the bike on Tuesday and Wednesday. I'll meet you on the roundabout outside Virgin Media. Which day suits you best?

So when is the next meet going to be? This Tuesday? I'll see about being at the next one.

I will attend again once:
a) The weather improves slightly
b) My bike is taxed
c) The front end is back together.
b & c should be complete in the next couple of weeks and Im hoping a is not far behind
a is not really mandatory, but now I have a company car, Ive gone a bit soft.

Hi all. I've been quiet of late cos I moved at the beginning of December. I've moved from brackley to Ludgershall, which is near Andover, although still working in Oxford. In fact I'm not too far from the Stig!! Cos of the move and the weather my bike and bike stuff is still packed up. I'm working on the bike at the mo getting it ready for the warmer weather, so I'll be down the Shire in the not too distant. Before anyone comments on me being a wuss for not biking in the cold, there's nothing more fun than a BMW in the snow, equipped with winter tyres!!!
