No not the band, the seeds. Yes, gardening:D:D:D

Last year's chillis were a bit disappointing, they were warm rather than hot.

Recommendations please for some proper chilli seeds:p

Ask Blue Pete.... my dads were a bit mild this year too! Dried some out for seed.....but they've already been earmarked as France.

Just wondering how you stop the spider mites getting on them? Still using the seeds from my first packet from wilcos. Not very hot I'm afraid.

I think everyone had a bad chilli year Ed. several lads at work grow and failed, so did I.

I've managed to get a mature Dorset Naga plant, it's about four feet high and still growing now!

I've used hese guys before, http://www.southdevonchillifarm.co.uk/shop/index.php?target=categories&category_id=1

Very good products.

If you choose a really hot variety, get the seeds sown indoors now with extra heat underneath.

The only way that really works is a bit tedious. I don't believe in feeding chemicals to the plants, so I dip a cotton wool bud in meths or similar and wipe it over the damn things. Slow, but it works.

Mine failed last year too so I bought quite a big plant from a chilli festival. Got loads of very hot scotch bonnets from it but can anyone tell me if the plant will produce more next year as it's in the conservatory - lots of light but a bit cold. Not sure what to do with it now.

Dorset nagas are Mr LPH's choice as he likes them hot, I nearly killed him a few weeks ago when I stuck a whole one on a pizza after getting it mixed up with a normal green chilli - oops.

LPH, keep the plant somewhere warm over winter, then the conservatory in summer.

Pollinate the flowers with a fine paintbrush to increase the crop. Tomato fertiliser will help too once it's started fruiting.

I start mine off in a heated propagator, when the plants are about an inch to an inch and a half high I move them onto a sunny windowsill and repot them as they grow, then outside in May once frost danger has passed. We don't have a greenhouse so I usually end up chasing the sun and moving them around the garden as the sun goes round.

I grow lots of stuff but every year fail at Chillis. What's the trick here then, brushing the pollen from the flowers makes them grow more prolifically, (not sure what pollinating chilli flowers involves)?

You're replacing the natural pollinator by doing it with a brush. Just make sure it's very soft and tickle each flowers centre in turn. Think of it as making chilli babies!

I grew 4 varieties last year, but they didnt do anything, thinking of buying a greenhouse though and giving it another go, thing is I really want to do some sort of chilli marinade for steaks etc so I'll keep an eye on this thread :)

Well Ive been out and bought a heated propogator and planted my first set of chiili's up, bought some naga jolokia, reputed to be the hottest chilli's in the world, you've got to start them early, end of jan/early feb preferably to give them a head start. They should take a week to a fortnight to germinate and if they go ok I'll buy some more as a later crop, just cleared part of my garden for a greenhouse too, should be fun ;)

Bluepete

Good luck germinating them!

Some cooler types are much easier to get going. One tip is to put the seeds in some cold tea (no milk!) overnight before planting.

I mentioned this to wifey, who went out and bought some Apache seeds. So I can't disappoint, I have planted them and they're on the windowsill in covered but unheated seed trays X 2.

Will be interesting to see how we all do:D
