Pants... My first post trying to introduce myself and hijack a post thinking it was the right place to say hello. :smt075

i'll start over..

Hi All.
Always wanted to ride a bike but never committed to learning as family and work got in the way, next thing you now i'm in to my late thirties.
Last year my best friend passed his test and there was no way i was going to have him get one up on me so i took the plunge and passed my Mod 1 first time, mod 2 took a second try due to some poor speed limit observation.
I always fancied a SV as a first bike as it looked better than the usual fazer, bandit or hornet suggestions i was getting, and the low seat height was appealing. At 5'9" I wanted to be able to put both feet firmly on the ground.

I got my bike from Ebay from a trusted seller and from all accounts it seems like I got a great bargain and the bike is very sound. Unfortunatly it was a Xmas bargain purchase so not had a chance to get much riding in yet, probably done about a 100miles so far but each time ive been out my confidence is increasing. I also dropped the bike the first time out when trying to turn on a very steep hill. I rolled backwards and flopped to floor when I turned; chipping the end off the clutch lever . I have since got a better handle on the weight and manouverability and am starting to relax and enjoy the riding experience. I find talking out loud about my observations whilst riding helps too keep me relaxed and observant.

As soon as the weather clears up a bit i'll be trying the short commute to work from Rochdale to Manchester.. Can't wait.

Welcome mate. Good luck with the commute. You'll just get better and better with more experience. Don't worry about dropping it either. Most people drop 'em at some point.

Don't forget to keep your eyes where you want to go and keep your foot riding the foot brake if you're not feeling confident in a corner. That would've saved you from rolling back. Nothing wrong with having that brake on while you're moving round the corner to control your speed. Rear brake is useless for stopping at speed anyway, so it might as well get used for corner control.

Stick with it dude. You're an old fart so it'll take you longer to get into the swing of it, but at least you've finally done it. I started in my late 20s and felt I would've been doing better if I'd started when I was a teenager. Must be 10 times worse for you. ;)

Hi All. thanks for the warm welcomes, glad to be part of the community.. My SV is a yellow 'Curvy' 2001, and Oi - i'm not that old, not on the inside anyway :D

my day job is managing 4 online businesses, but my I mostly keep my main business Sizzle Media on the straight and narrow, we design, build and SEO websites, mostly ecommerce projects. Google Sizzle media, it will give you a flava of what we get up to when things are going right.

Welcome :), don't worry about dropping it to much, it's like a ritual...it has to happen lol. I did my dropping in the early years, luckily it was on grass.

I've come to terms with the fact that i will be toppling over every now and again, thankfully the bike isn't very heavy and I can handle the weight without too much of a struggle. If I'm stationary at worst it will be more of a 'lowering' to the floor than a drop. i'm going to wait another month before i get a replacement clutch lever.

Any suggestions as to what type of crash protectors I should be looking at and where to get them from?
