Well, having swapped my 99 curvy for an 03 GSXR, I was force to sell up when I got a job in Milton Keynes as I needed a car for the 720 mile weekly commute.

I'm now working in Newcastle, and all being well I'll be in Edinburgh from April. And that's definitely commutable from Glasgow, so...

I'm looking to get back on 2 wheels, and rather than go for something sporty like the gixxer or an r1, I think my money would be better spent on a nice comfy SV. And if I'm doing 90 miles a day, I'm thinking the thou could be a good shout.

Firstly, has anybody any thoughts on the thou over the 650? Secondly, has anybody got one for sale in Scotland/Northern England that they'd like to point me in the direction of? I've checked eBay and AT but would buy from a regular on here before I'd buy off either of them.

Thanks folks.

Welcome back! :smt041

The only downside i've heard of the thou is it like to drink! compared to 650. Someone at the GM last year said can be down in the 30's ? Don't know how true this is but worth finding out about.

If you are going to commute to Edinburgh and back everyday! Have to tank it every day?

Whatever you get, hope to see you out one one of our runs this year, GMV in July?

Howdy!

I think it'd be about 4 tanks a week on a 650 but I won't have to pay for parking and traffic will be less of an issue for me so happy to do it - there's not much in it compared to running a car in terms of fuel costs. I'll have to find someone who can tell me average miles per tank and cost to fill it on the thou.

Quite keen on a thou now I've looked at a few - the dual exhaust looks ace and it looks a decent chunk of metal!

And the SV1000Sz, the anniversary model with Gixxer paint job is bloody gorgeous! I would really like one of them.

not as "wiggly" as the 650 as the weight shows, but the standard suspension is better, not to bad on a constant throttle but as said can be a bit thirsty if you're heavy handed.

Cheers Mark.

The little Sv makes an ace commuter bike.
It's fast enough , thin so you can make progress ,easy to.pilot and easy on your pocket.

Welcome back

The nearest two Thou's I've spotted is York and Wakefield.
If your in Newcastle 650's and Gladuis are breeding in the Dealers

If I'm using it for a steady 60-70mph commute, 45 miles each way, I reckon I could have it working alright economy wise. It's the weekend blasts that will leave me weak in the wallet I imagine.

I'd be happy with a pointy 650 but just feel like a thou would be a nice step for me, especially after the gixxer.

Ah a case of "more power",then 1000 is the way forward.
Unless you go to the dark side.

I had one for about 6 months. Great bike but seriously thirsty. I couldn't get more than 100 miles out if my tank even pootling along at 70 80 on my mainly motorway commute. Got myself an 07 registered k4 gsxr600 now. I find it confide than my sz and its certainly more economical!!

Only problem is you can get a decent thou for £2500 but to get an equivalent gixxer it's a big jump in spending. It's hard to argue with the value of the SV! 100 miles a tank wouldn't be too bad. I was only getting 120ish out of the gixxer so it's not massively different.

Decision decisions......!

Very true. The difference in cost is a fair bit of petrol!! Also my thou sounded awesome with the yoshis on. I was lucky as I got more for my 06 sz than I paid for my 07 gixxer;)

WBgo for the sv 1000,or failing that if your going to use it summer and winter and want something to use and abuse and dont want to spend a lot on it and want some thing that will clock up the miles for very little money buy a bandit 6 or 12 good for 100k+ and almost indestructable

Good God people! What is wrong with you Thou's?

Had mine since Jan 2010, she is a K4, been down the road once, fell off twice more. She now has K7 GSXR-750 forks, racing cans, new air filter, double bubble screen, is now black (was silver,) is as flickable as any "touring" twin should be. You wanna "flick" your bike, buy a screaming 600 or something!

I have never had issues getting knee down on my bike or riding to Germany on it or getting 180 miles out of the tank from Hull to Strensham Services!

I usually get the "low fuel" light on anywhere between 120 and 130 miles when regular “town, city and motorway” riding. Once got it down to 100 miles, but, that was “hard gas” for the whole tank.

Other than that they are comfortable two up, can carry a fair bit a weight, wheelie quite easily (be careful not to starve the front cylinder of oil mind you,) are at home on long tours or race tracks and are a hoot to ride when you can open the throttle and just feel the torque drive you to hyper-space

So, get one! And then join the SV1000 Portal too, like I did

Right, Sv1000 it is.

All I need to do now is get my contract switched to Edinburgh and then find a good value one to buy.

If anyone here's of one for circa £2500, let me know....

I paid £2200 for mine two years ago and she was 6 year old and done 32k miles.

I have done 18k on here since then and all I have needed to change has been the oil when it has gone too dark for my liking.

You'd be able to get a good K5 or K6 for that I would think

If you wanna look for one, like I said visit http://www.sv-portal.com/ and have a natter on there.

I am the same on there as on here and there are a few for sale on there at the moment IIRC

So, a year after I started this thread and I've got my SV thou!

Delivered today and looking ace. I'll get some proper pics up on Sunday but I went out for a quick spin and its very nice. It had renthal bars which I thought would be weird but are actually really comfy. It's a big heavy bike though - loads bigger than my 650 if I remember correctly.

The micron cans are good but loud. Not sure my neighbours are going to be overly impressed when I start her up at 6am each day.

Came with the original screen and original cans, plus another set of cans, so I'll see which cans i like I probably sell on the others. Also came with an oxford cover, rear paddock stand, rear hugger and original rear light unit. Best thing though - heated grips!!! How have I got this far without them?!?!

My bike gear needs cleaning though. Has been in the loft for a year and smells funky. Nikwax is on its way!

All in all, extremely chuffed to be back in two wheels, even if snow is coming.

I would do but its currently got a layer of snow over it! Typical - I move to two wheels the week the blizzards come back.

Think I might stick with the mini this week...

Good plan . when its icy if you can avoid useing 2 wheels its a sensible plan.
But I do notice my petrol bill goes up a fair bit :(

I rode all through the winter of 2010/11 including a wee bit of snow but I was only doing a 20 min commute and had been riding every day for 6 months. Not too keen to have my introduction back into biking to be wet slushy roads and a big heavy bike. Think I'll wait for that snow to pass.

Ice and 2 wheels dont float my boat.Risky enough at the top of my road. And gobo corner useing 4 wheels

So all geared up for my first Glasgow to Edinburgh commute tomorrow. Bit nervous as this'll be my longest ride in about 18 months but I'm sure the knowledge will all come flooding back pretty quickly.

I made it!!

Commute in was ok. I left at 6am and hit Edinburgh at 7am, so it's 20 mins faster than my previous park and ride commute.

Few things I noted:

1. The headlight on the thou is very very good. Much better than by curvy and also better than my GSXR too. It lit up the whole road ahead and gave me great visibility on the unlit sections of the M8 (which are the majoritym not the minority)
2. The ride height is much higher than I expected. It has renthal bars so is set up for commuting but I still felt like I was perched on top of the bike. I'll have to see how much I like that over the next few months and whether I want to go back to the stock bars again.
3. Engine breaking. I forgot how strong it is on the SV! I knocked it down a couple of gears approaching a roundabout and I nearly went over the bars!
4. My exhausts might be too loud. Leaving a very quiet street in the countryside at 6am with two bafflle-less cans was rather noisy. There's also a wee bit of popping as I knock it down the gears. I have two speare sets of exhausts so I might try those over the weekend to see whether one set is a wee bit quieter but still sounding good.
5. It is cold. Very, very cold.

I shall take pics of the bike this weekend as it is dark when I set off and dark when I get in.

I don't mind it - I had an ART can on my SV650 that was looud as hell and popped regularly - but this is a louder bike anyway, and has twin cans. I think my neighbours might think they're being shot at! :smt066

You could do that with any bike, surely. Admittedly if you rode a blue sv thou it would be a bit easier but I'd still say low risk.

its always best to be cautious.
No GPS tagging on smart phone pic (exif data they can find were you took it ).
Cloneing no plates still goes on .
