What are peoples thoughts about the new Suzuki GSXR 1000?
Trying to make up my mind about a new 1000cc?
BMW S1000rr (with heated grips!) , Honda CBR1000, Aprillia RSV4 or GSXR1000?
(Ducati just a bit too pricey for me).

easy answer. go and test ride them and decide which one you like.

personally i don't see the need to have a 1000cc bike on British roads, but each to their own i suppose.

Coming from a GSXR owner, I don't like the new one. There is a complete lack of inspiration from the designer and IMO it looks dated and bland. Aesthetically the GSXR hasn't really changed since the 09 model came out. Suzuki are also trying to pass off its 3 way mode switch as a form of traction control Its just a gimic. We all know when they do the big litre bike test in the summer its gonna be at the back of the pack again. Bring back the lunacy of the K1, K2 and K5 days i'd say.

In saying that i will still be attending the launch at Saltire Suzuki on the 11th Feb.

I've test rode the BMW S1000RR and its a bonkers bike, thought it handled better than my thou and the Brembo stoppers where faultless. Can't comment on the Aprillia or Honda though. I do like the Aprillia :-)

I'd say try them all and buy the one that you feel is right for you :riding:

Without a test ride has to be the RSV4 I say but as said test ride them all....also do yourself a favour and test ride an SMT, better suited to the British roads ;)

(Ducati just a bit too pricey for me).this is my take on the bikes
the bmw may do every thing you want,BUT i assume like all the other 4s they make, its reliability is rubbish, gearbox and clutch problems that cost 3k a throw, electrics that are not very robust
the blade, does every thing its supposed to, with that honda build quality, but for me a bit to extreme, ill stick with my 929
the aprillia well what do we say,its italian and the first batch broke there conrods, would you want to own one of these when its done 50k and is 5 years old,not for me
and then there is the gsxr, dont know what its like to live with but suzuki know how to put a bike together and make them last
so in my eyes the blade would be infront of the others followed by the gsxr

Cheers for the replys. I have had a test ride last year on the bmw s1000rr, an absolute riot but at high speed numbers, not sure I could control myself all the time. The 2010 CBR I liked but after a test run I just couldn't get the bike to fit me, not very comfortable (In my opinion). Skinners in Dundee didnt have an RSV4 demo bike when I rang so still to sit on that wee beast. Every Suzuki I have had has fitted me like a glove from wee blasts to town riding hence why i am still looking at this for my next one. Still all new crop out now and I am sure that I will get to sit on the new ones at the bike show to help me make up my mind.

Rsv4 from an aesthetics pov. The sound of it too is amazing. If you test ride it and like it... Then get it. It's the stand out from the crowd one in my opinion.

Obviously price will also come into the equation:
Honda CBR1000RR £12000 OTR
BMW S1000RR £12,295 plus £1360 for sports package
RSV4 APRC £14128 OTR
GSXR1000 £10999

And what will I get to trade in my GSXR 750 K8 now that’s the big question!

Why do you need a 1000cc sports bike?

I can't see yopu being any quicker on one than your 750...

I thought that about every bike on the Suzuki stand at the NEC this year. They are still punting bikes based on the Bandit FFS and the Pointy SV which is now a 9 year old model. They've been left behind by 5-10 years of near zero R&D.

Why do you need a 1000cc sports bike?

Have to admit I was thinking that as soon as you posted that you were replacing a 2008 750.

I understand having a litre sports bike because that's the bike you wanted, as I did that myself, but I was changing from an SV650. I don't ride mine any quicker than I did my SV, I just thrash it less.

Changing from 2008 Gixxer 750, to a 2012 Gixxer thou, what's the difference other than a bigger engine? And it's not like the 750 is slow.

No R1? Music to the ears. Character and reliability/ cheap to run.

'Priller then. The only one that's not just a bigger version of what u have got.

You'll be having some fun finding out! Good luck.

To be honest I dont need a new bike 1000cc sports bike, my 750 is running fine and still in mint condition and true I may not be any faster. I have, however, always wanted a full on sports bike since I started biking. I made sure I have progressed in steps and I now feel that I could handle one without wrapping myself around the nearest lamp post. Plus I am now in a position that I can afford one without too much skimping and scraping and the big reason is my other half wants to start a family in the next year or so... So if I dont buy one now (read this Easter) I may not have the option financially in the next year or so.

Have you thought about an RC8?

You may still be able to get really great deals on brand new unregistered '09 models (around £8k).

It's a lot of bike for the money (brembos etc) and is pretty rare.

I hadnt honest considered the RC8? I had kind of forgot about it. I will look up the reviews. Alot of money to save.

Yeah, I don't think they'll be too many '09 left now but there are bound to be a few e.g:

I don't see them on Drysdale's website any more so I presume they have none left. Great big v-twin, especially at that price!

Definitely go for a test long test ride on the RC8. My brother-in-law did not get on with it at all. Riding position is very extreme. (He had Ducati 748 before it and that was a lot comfier!) He said it was excellent for the track but 100 miles was the absolute limit on the road.

They do look and sound awesome.:smt031

What an absolute steal for £7.5K - just need 5 or more numbers tonight

Fast bikes test on the Bike Channel said the same thing, that it's a track day tool or a Sunday morning blaster.

Didn't one of the magazines have the RC8 as a real-roads sportsbike not too long ago? That probably just reinforces the idea that you need to get out and try as many as you can, I guess.

Thats what I love about the GSXR. It's comfy to ride on the road all day long and also at home on the track ;-)

All I can say, is I'm glad it's you that's looking for a new bike, I would be bloody demented by now if I was looking for a litre bike, sooo many out there and the majority of them are damn good.

Have to say though, on the sensible/reliabilty side would prob go for the blade, been a fan of them for years, 2010/11 model rather than the new one tho, not that keen on the new styling/headlights. Best o luck & enjoy your search and whatever you get :)

I totally disagree. I'd say it is comfier than both sv's I've had. Everything is adjustable ie ride height, pegs, clip ons etc.

I've been on a new blade a few times and I'd say the rc8 def has a less extreme riding position. I was very surprised with how comfortable it is.

As said though you'd be best to try one somewhere.

Have a look at this months Bike magazine they have a good bit on RC8. I'm not 100% on its looks but hey ho

I'd looked at the 950 supermoto but my stumpy legs didn't fit.

As usual a great we day out at Saltires. Free BBQ and plenty of lovely looking two wheeled machinery. What more could one want ;)

Took a few snaps of the GSXR 1000 L2. Looks a much better in the flesh but not much has changed with some minor engine tweaks, single sided muffler, and new Brembo monobloc brakes. Not enough to make me want to change bikes and more than likely not enough to dominate the litre bike class when the press pits them against its rivals :(

that bike in the pics looks like it has been doing burnouts, looking at the tyre and the all the S**T up around the rear lights.

Yeah Torquil Paterson rode the bike in to the shop floor but not before, as you pointed out, doing a burnout. A bit silly really as the rear end is caked in rubber and looks a mess.

As for the bike its not bonny.

I am liking the look of it. Especially in STEALTH black. True it may not be a change for yourself as you have the old bike but for me (plus a good insurance quote from H&R of £410 fully comp and protected nc) its looking more and more like my next bike. Seeing it In the flesh is my next goal! Thanks for posting the pictures. :D

Just a quick update and info.

Been to Mickey Oats yesterday (I know some people dont rate them but I have never had a problem and they have been quick to help me in the past plus they offered me an excellent deal to change bikes) to have a quick look at the GSXR1000 (nice in the flesh!) But just incase anyone else is interested they are currently running their own 0% deal just now upto end of April which includes all new suzuki bikes!! GSXR1000 K12, Hayabusa etc. The blue and white one, that they currently have in, is registered to them and will be available for test rides in a week or two!
Happy days. :D

Just wait till cresent suzuki release a special. Had a go on my mates guintoli (spelling??) rep with 175bhp at the rear. Not even a rsv 4 can stick with it in a straight line. And it was only a grand more than the standard one when he got it. Great value for money and makes a change to the usual suzuki colours
