View Full Version : Diagnose this noise and vibration?

Today I took the old girl out for the first time since I took the front forks off and then put some straight ones on and rode it 70 miles in the snow.

I haven't had it very long and the bike is 20 years old, but I'm curious about the amount of vibration I can feel at high RPM.

It's not a shaking of the head but a shallow but strong vibration - I don't know if it is coming from the front wheel or the engine. I can feel it through the footpegs and at high RPM if I touch the bar ends it's really vibrating. I can't feel it through the hand grips however.

I don't know the cause but it could be because I dropped her 3 times last week whilst pushing her through the snow to the garage? It was at walking pace and it was more of a lay down than a violent drop so I doubt this as the reason but I don't remember it doing it before. I may have been concentrating on the cold weather rather than the vibrations!

also

There is a strange noise coming from the front end of the bike - I don't know where its coming from exactly but could be the wheel bearing? It's like a metallic scraping noise that is only heard above 20mph and it decreased in volume after a 40mile ride.

Any ideas?

What bike is it? This may not assist - but you never know.

Stiff link in chain can cause a judder , Pads not returning into the calipers . Have you touched the Disk at all when you stop ? I had a rubbing pad one Winter , I stopped the bike and got off and tapped the disc with my fingers and it was BLOODY hot .

It's a CBR600 1992.

I didn't touch the discs or pads but I will check them out tonight.

Thanks!

How about the vibration? Could it all be caused by the same thing? I would have thought that if I can feel the vibration through the pegs as well as the bar ends it would be in the chassis rather than from the wheel?

Check your chain for starters , I had a chain with a stiff link that gave me a knock in the footpegs .

I think the sound is a wave or notch on the disc. I'll check tomorrow in the day light if its a notch and try and file it off. If its a bend I guess new discs is the only option?

I haven't checked the chain yet.
