Well I must have as I just received a letter from a debt collection agency saying that I failed to display a ticket on my motorbike at 19:58 on Friday 2nd September at Havelock Holdings. Please pay them £144.
Except I haven't ridden my bike since July.
And Havelock Holdings appear to be based in Leicester whereas I was out with the Soho Massive that evening, Raving Mavis even gave me a lift to Soho from Lord's and then I got the train home, to Essex, where my bike was safely locked in my garage.
Idiots. They reckon that after I failed to pay the first few demands they got my details from the DVLA. Just spoken to the agency on the phone and they are now going to look into it. I might just let them take me to court then ask for compensation for wasting my time and phone bill.

Reg plate been cloned?
There was a bloke on the local news not so long ago, who hadn't ever been to the places his car had apparently been parked illegally. The car had been all over the South...... he'd not stepped foot out of Yorkshire, and had racked up some hefty fines.
I would seriously consider looking into it deeply, if the agency refuse to budge.

The chap on the phone said it's possible someone wrote the reg down wrong. I have a personalised plate which includes LPH and I've only had it a year. Maybe it's whoever owned the plate before me.

Its not impossible for a mistake to be made or for it to be who ever owned the plate before. However, quick answer to that would be, the ticket was issued on Friday 2nd September(I'm assuming 2011) and you say you've had the plate a year......?
Don't worry it's a private parking company they just give up in the end, we've never paid one of these even when we've done the deed, just ignore them.

Yes. Got it for my 40th but didn't switch it over til March when my tax was due.

check your credit record afterwards and make sure that they have lifted all records of said matter. if you don't get them to rectify it there and then it can be a nightmare. you have been warned :smt064

+1, just ignore them as they have no way in law to fine you even if you have parked outside of their terms and conditions.
I never pay when I park at our local hospital and I'm damned if I ever will. Had loads of tickets, never paid one of them.

Can we get away with it because its, for example, not cost effective for the private company to pursue through some type of prosecution or
is it legal to issue tickets/ fines via a private deployed company but the Govt haven't put any legislation/ prosecution mechanism behind it?

I never had any intention of paying. But I'm interested to know how they got my reg plate mixed up. I'll be asking for photographic evidence and written confirmation that my address is removed from any credit references as this is a debt collection company who are pursuing me.

1) Claire - main issue here is to find out whether your plate may still be in use on another vehicle, accidentally/cloned/otherwise - parking tickets might be a bit annoying but it could late be NIPs or police knocking on your door if someone is riding round with you reg..
2) police or council parking tickets MUST be paid. Parking tickets by private companies are not legally enforceable so you can either ignore them (as I did with LDK security ltd. - google them on the consumer action group website) and although they'll send letters warning of increased costs/impending doom, they eventually stop & you hear nothing more of the matter (I had 4 letters from roxburghe debt collectors each time adding another £30-£90 of fee's). It is my understanding that the only bailiffs who can enter your home are county court appointed agents, so the parking company would have to take you to court, and even then they wouldn't win/court fees would be more than the 'fine' is worth.
Alternatively you can send them a letter along the lines of:
Dear parking nobs,
In relation to parking ticket 123, I am writing to contest the matter as I was not the driver of the vehicle when the parking 'offence' was committed. After seeking legal advice it is my understanding that I do not have to identify the driver to anyone other than the chief of police, sheriff of Nottingham or batman.
Thanks again for all the bits of paper, you have saved me a fortune on my notepad costs and I now keep all your letters next to my telephone.
Toddle pip. Xxx
Only issue is that if you reply then you're drawing attention to yourself in that you are willing to have a dialogue with them & they will probably send more threatening letters which you will end up ignoring anyway.
Googling around will confirm the bits about 'do not pay them, do not contact them, they will go away'

Any who - get in touch with dvla/police about whether your plate might be being used by someone else & deal with the parking later :) hth

They just rang to say they are cancelling it. Taking it off my records too. WHen I asked if they have photos as I then need to report my plate as cloned he said that he suspected this was a case of human error on the part of the warden. In other words, now they have had a close look at any photos they do have it probably has a plate one digit out from mine.
What Kermit and Fozzie Bear type people I have to deal with.

I agree with what everyone says about ignore.
One cautionary tale. A work colleague received a nip, whilst disputing it he was arrested for dangerous driving and leaving the scene of an accident. then further nips and police at his door. all the time his car was in the garage, No accidental damage etc.
They then came to arrest him for fleeing the scene of yet another accident this time gloating that they had his car. Err still in the garage. finally they had the message, someone has cloned my car
