View Full Version : Oi Geeks - Its New Motherboard time
So i have decided to resurect my PC from the ashes instead of spending a small fortune on a laptop.
So i need a new motherboard.
I need ATX form factor
Processor open to suggestions either i5 or AMD FX
8gb Ram
Cooler
What else do it need if building my own?
I would like HDMI but do have a graphics card with this on board so not essential.
PC to be used for general stuff plus using a DJ mixing package and for Photo editing (Lightroom3) and maybe Video editing.
I have a SSHDD and a new boxed copy of Win7Pro so can handle 64bit OS
Budget Max £250
Thanks in advance

I bought the bits I put my new PC from there - they have a rep to uphold, customer service is good and as you can pick the stuff up, due to no postage costs work out the same as the online only guys.

i5 2500K CPU will give you 4.0Ghz as an easy, stable overclock. I have built nearly a dozen boxes with this and they are blazing fast. Add SSD for maximum effect. (Overbudget, but won't need upgrading for ages)
Description Price
Intel Core i5 2500K 3.3GHz Socket 1155 6MB Cache Retail Boxed Processor £171.77
Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3-B3 Z68 Socket 1155 7.1 Channel HD Audio ATX Motherboard £85.98
Corsair 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1333MHz XMS3 Memory Kit CL9 1.5V unbuffered £34.98
Total £292.73
There's a more expensive mobo with built in graphics - what card do you have already?

Mr V,
I've got a gigabyte i3-i7 motherboard you can have for a good price. It cost me 60quid a few months back, and I only used it for 10mins until I realised I needed more PCI-E 16x slots.
It's one of these http://www.ebuyer.com/261352-gigabyte-ga-p61-usb3-b3-h61-socket-1155-7-1-channel-hd-audio-atx-motherboard-ga-p61-usb3-b3

Im an AMD fan, so go with an Intel chip, perhaps wait till Ivybridge comes out and pick up a decent Sandybridge core at a cheaper price?

They just announces Ivybridge is going to be Q4 2012
So not worth waiting.

SHHHHH Anna !!!!!
I just know he'll blame me for that and its ME that will have to face the music.
Thanks...
:p
See, i give you lot a budget and its allways a bit more.
Not interested in overclocking and all that and i need it now so cant wait. Probably going to go for this with an additonal 4gb ram

Thoughts? It seems to do eveything that i need or Sudoxe, talk to me.

Then you change the spec and start saying you want to go AMD !!!
I wouldn't do that - even with 6 cores running at the same speed as the Intel, the AMD is slower.
With Sudoxe's board, you should be able to come in about budget, £160 for the CPU and stock cooler (http://www.dabs.com/products/intel-core-i5-2500-3-30ghz-lga1155-6mb-79Q7.html?q=i5-2500&src=16), £40 for the memory (need to check with him about what exact spec) leaving the change to go to Sudoxe :)
Remember that most apps dont do multi-core well, so more cores = good if doing lots of things at once, fewer, faster cores would be better if doing one or two things.
I get my facts/figures on this from here (http://compare-processors.com/amd-fx-6100-vs-core-i5-2500k/2325/).
So it looks like false economy to me.
You could get the i5 now, use it as stock, then in a year or so, spend a few quid on a CPU cooler and overclock your way to an upgrade.
I got an i5-2500 which sits happily at 33% over its stock clock speed on an £80 cooler.
SK, i didnt change the spec. I said i5 or AMD FX. You need to upgrade your eyes old boy ;)
Ok, you have gone over my head now. I will await a resonse form Dan and maybe go that route, might drop down to an i3 even. Anything is going to be better than my old AMD3700+ thats in there already.

Basically the new-gen AMD chips are rubbish, performing worse than the last-gen in many cases.
I guess I saw the FX in the original and thought I must have been imagining it :p
Going cheap on this now is a false economy for the sake of a few quid TBH, you are just bringing the day you have to upgrade again that much closer.

I've kept quiet on this thread so far, but agree with SK that you'd be better off with one of the Sandy Bridge i5's. A few years ago I'd have recommended AMD but, for now, Intel is back in the lead and the i5 is an awesome chip. For most usage, 4 faster cores will be better than 6 slower ones, and the i5 hits the price/performance sweet spot.
