I just had work on a MacBook

Why?

It wouldn't print to the network printer.

It has worked in the past, other users can print from Linux. or Windows anthe Mac can browse the internet and one I found out how to get a Terminal, I can ping the printer.

Apple "just work's " nope, not 'n my experience

Apple have just released a major printer driver update. Wonder if they've broken something.

In my experience of Windows, Mac and Linux, the Mac 'just works' far more of the time than the other two. None are 100% perfect though.

apple are pretty easy systems but i have found that for anything decently in-depth, windows and more so Linux are better systems to deal with.

go and douse yourself in bleach, you bad bad man.

i used to fix computers as a side line when i was at uni and most of the mac users i had to deal with were ermmm 'technophobes' the biggest problems i use to get with mac users was them trying to stick phone line cables into ethernet sockets or vice versa as they had moved their computer to another part in the house and wondered why it would not work. macs have one button on the mouse for a reason, any more than that and the users get confused.

They haven't had one button mice for years, so you're rather behind the times.

Most of the mac users I know are extremely competent techies. They've mostly moved from Linux to OS X and are generally highly paid professional software developers, so they can afford the premium for Apple hardware. Of course, people like that don't need tech support.

This is a recent phenomena. A few years ago, no self-respecting techie would have used a Mac. They were all linux geeks back then. Nowadays, the Mac Book Pro seems to be their weapon of choice.

Edit: It's just occurred to me that a lot of them might have bought their macs to do some iPhone development in their spare time, and then found that they preferred OS X to Linux.

SK

I had more aggro sharing a file and printer on a local with 7 and XP (7 viewing) than a did when I retested with a Mac.
Bib I've found a lot of the 'younger' ones are trendies and want their Iphone, ipad, Mac Book pro and Ipod touch to sync with the toilet. What I do know is the news office where I manage uses a mac for editing- I couldn't afford in the slightest

I could never get my old macbook pro (10.6) to print to canon network printers with the software FW turned on

Funny, we have the opposite problem here, the IMac can access every aspect of the home net work and can see every other computer. It is able to share files with every other computer and can use the network printer and just works. It has only gone down once when the hard drive failed and that took half an hour to replace (once we worked out how to get the glass screen front off!) and then it just rebooted and reisntalled leopard all by itself (well thanks to the HD Back up system we have in place), returning to normal in just two hours from failure.

The Windows computers can see each other, the Win7 comps can speak to each other, the old XP Lappy can see, but can't talk to them. However it can talk to them if it goes via the IMac. Just recently the New Win7 Desk top System decided that it no longer likes talking to the Win7 Laptop, despite talking with ease prior to this change of heart. At first we thought this was the Lap Top, but it turned out to be the new Desk Top. One New version of Win7 Installed later and it started working again. then just recently, it has once again had an update and rejected the home network. WE have still not managed to find the setting that allows it to talk to the Laptop and as for the poor old XP lap top, it is rather lonely, with only the IMac to talk to!

I love our Mac, it is awesome, even if it does only have two buttons on the mouse! ;-)

Iphone, ipad, Mac Book pro and Ipod touch to sync with the toilet.

Are these not all devices with comparable function?

My company has 57,000 windoze PCs, a 1000 Linux "workstations" in the hands of the lusers. Not a single mac for one very good reason. We need to be able to work together.
