Haven't posted on here for ages but as you lot are a bunch of geeks I thought I'd give it a try!

Thinking of swapping over from Sky to VM and probably having my phone and broadband with them too, are they better/worse than sky? I've heard stories of broadband dropping out for a few hours at a time, is there much truth in this as I'd need the broadband for checking work emails etc.

Cheers,
Andy

Been with them for last couple of years, had no problem at all, guess it depends what package you would be on, i'm on 50meg, later on this year to be 120 meg.

That's weird, as you were typing that I was on the phone to Virgin Media. But it wasn't about service, it was about cost.
I've been with them for around 18 months, after a BT debacle, and the quality of connection is pretty consistently good. On the 2 or 3 occasions broadband connections hasn't worked, a free call to them has fixed in very efficiently. The broadband connection I have with them is quick and efficient enough to meet exam board standards for marking and submission of data.
My gripe is that their phone call cost a bloody packet!

been with them for about 14 years (cableinet, blueyonder, virgin) started when they done their £10 unlimited dial up. in that whole time i have had a problem maybe once a year the rest of the time its rock solid. i have tv and broadband but no phone as i use voice over ip. this works out a looot cheaper than sky and bt as i don't have to pay for a phone line or calls. the new throttling at peek times is a bit nippy but most if not all isp's do this now. another good thing is they are rolling out double speed.

something to consider about Sky is that if your dish moves in high winds you get a crap tv picture and with cable there is no ugly fekin dish bolted to your house.

my mother-in-law made the mistake of switching and she is regretting it. poor picture quality and dodgy broadband.

a lot of people slate virgin but my personal experience of them is that they are pretty reliable. well in sunny fife anyway.

Was with Virgin (ntlworld) then switched to a connection that used the phone line. Big mistake. Was paying for 25MB and getting 2MB.

Switched back to Virgin for phone and internet. Paying for 20MB, getting 19.8MB.

Service has always be good in my experience. Don't use the phone much so can't comment on the cost of that.

We've been on virgin (Telewest, blueyonder) on various packages over the last 16ish years.

We've never had an issue beyond a fibre fault and when they've been doing maintenance (our area's BT is a mess and takes every utility twice as long to fix out)

I've just had Virgin Media put in at my new place. 100 Mb broadband which I did a speedtest.net on the day after installation and the result was 101.6Mb. I dont get those speeds on my laptop of course and the bottle neck is now my Wireless Network - Even that is triband 5GHz N.

I'm with them.
Got the unlimited phone, basic tv and the xl broadband.
Had a few settling in problems when I first went across to them fully but they soon rectified the issues.
I've got friends who left virgin to go to bt and regret signing the contract.

When I was with them as NTL it was plain sailing but when virgin took over and I tried to switch I sky to keep sky sports they gave me nothing but hell. My complaint went to watchdog which shut them up in the end.

I have been with VM for about 10 years. I have probably had to call customer services 3 times due to outages. Biggest problem is that their call centres are staffed with indian script monkeys. I tell them that they had a DHCP problem. yes sir I can see your modem and the signals are ok. No it is not the connectivity, I can see it is connected you are not giving me an ip address. There are no problems in your area. Yes there are put me through to an english call centre.

Yes their phone package is expensive. I do not have a VM phone line. instead I use sipgate. That way I do not have any line rental and pay cheap call costs. Where VM sting the user is on connection charges, it was about 4p per call. where you have kids that hang up whenever they hear a pre recorded voice and dial again a minute later that can soon clock up expensive calls. so for the cost of a £30 ATA and the fact that the VM internet is always on. cheap calls.

Performance wise, I am on the 50Mb package. I generally see that during the week. But it can sometime have an issue evenings and weekends as I type this I am only getting about 30Mb

Thanks guys. Looks like I'll be going to VM, just have to wait for the go ahead from work and hope there's a good deal on at the time. As a couple of you mentioned I don't think I'll bother with the phone line as we never use the one we've got installed at the moment.

just to say if anyone is looking for a good voip then give these people a try.

been with them for about 6 years and only time i have had a problem is when my internet goes down. calls are free to landlines and cheep as chips to mobile numbers. their customer service number is free and you get put threw to a US call centre where they are on the ball and very very polite and genuinely want to fix your problem rather than fob you off.

they also do a referral scheme where you can earn up to 3 months free rental for everyone you sign up.

With virgin. Pretty good but if you do get a problem the they are RUBBISH! Call centre staff can barely speak English and you get passed from desk to desk with not a lot getting done.
Internet drops every now and then but nothing major. The way the sky tv packages work is better but virgin media broadband is superior

I have been with virgin for about 8 years now in both ADSL and cable. Broadband is solid with no issues to report. I have phone and tv bit don't use either. It sad cheaper as a package. Customer service is questionable but only had to call them a couple of times. To top it all, I am on a 20 met service which is being tripled in June foc

They are ok until you get a problem. Then you have to go through the rubbish tech support to find out it's their fault, not yours. I have phone and broadband for £24pm, getting "free" upgrade to 20mb. Following day got a letter saying my package was rising to £27pm...
