Hi Guys,

Has anyone else had this problem? I have just re-installed my maps for my Garmin Zumo 550 but am having trouble unlocking them. I am trying to retrieve my unlock codes (as I have installed them previously) but it asks for my customer code after I enter my account details.

I don't recall ever receiving one and I can't find one in my emails. I can't find anywhere on the Garmin site that lets me retrieve this information.

I also tried the find device option on the website which said maps successfully unlocked but the map software remains locked.

Has anyone else ever experienced this or know how to solve it?

Cheers!

In addition - does anyone know how I can get the KMZ files (for Normandy) across to my Garmin without it?

Contact their tech support, if it's anything like tom-toms then it'll be brilliant.

I was about to call them but they are only there Monday - Friday, so thought I'd see if there was another way while I wait til Monday to come around !

Post in idle banter mate, more chance there of someone knowing or have had experienced the same issue.

Or you want me to move the thread to there?

Move it there mate if you don't mind :) I'll add this though - I've downloaded basecamp but I have no idea how to use it to get the routes onto the Garmin so if anyone knows the answer to that I'd be really grateful !

I suspect you'll find the answer to this issue on http://www.zumoforums.com/index.php

I seem to remember seeing exactly your problem discussed somewhere.

This happened to me a couple of years ago, when a bought a new lappy. Called Garmin Support and was told to download MapSource not load it from disc. Did that and hey presto no problem. They emailed me the link to download from, will get back to you if I can find it.

I hope you get it working. From what I hear we are going to need a Garmin in France if we are not to get totally lost ;-)

Just a heads up that France has outlawed the use of camera warning databases on satnavs. Now, whether they will be able to actually enforce it in any practical way seems open to debate, but since it's the first year any UK registered vehicles might be a good target for any stroppy flic.
Garmin and Tomtom have released new "danger zone" POI files, effectively the same thing but not technically linked to camera sites (apparently :^o ). They say it's legal having negotiated with the authorities. I think they had to change the zone distances or some such nonsense.

I have a camera POI file downloaded from the web for France, and there are files for the symbol and the audio warning mp3, so I plan to delete the symbol so nothing shows on the screen and use a new mp3 "danger" audio warning.

OK, I understood it, but still got my wife to clarify before posting this in case I had made a mistake. I'm not going to translate word for word, but these are the highlights from an interview with a motoring solicitor:

http://www.motoservices.com/vitesse/reglementation-radar.htm

This is discussing the new law surrounding radar detectors, or more accurately a modification to the existing law. These continue to be illegal to be carried, but the endorsement increases from 2 penalty points to 6 and the fine will be EUR1500. It can also lead to additional punishment such as a 3 year ban, confiscation of the vehicle, or removal of equipment installed in a vehicle.

GPS such as TomTom or smartphones are also covered by the new law. It is illegal to carry these, either on display or in the glovebox, they are illegal if they indicate the presence of fixed or mobile speed cameras. It is necessary to carry out a software update, or deactivate the function allowing you to detect fixed or mobile speed cameras otherwise you will be fined. The will be a tolerance in place where police will educate, but the duration of this tolerance has not been set.

In practice, police will not have the right to search your GPS or smartphone device to determine an infraction. Only in the case of a flagrant offence or following a judicial authorisation, may they be searched. The police cannot search the device without the consent of the driver. Paper maps printed with camera locations are not illegal.

Well the good thing is that mine doesn't have camera warning stuff on it. Only problem with mine is that the map year is 2008 lol but I've managed so far !

I had to ring them in the end but it looks like I've unlocked the maps. Only problem now is getting the KMZ files into MapSource or Basecamp. I converted them to GPX but when I import nothing appears so I have a new thing to stump me !

Gaz, my tyre software enables me to write the maps to other formats too, one of them is .gpx files I think.

Should I try and get hold of that or do you think you can send me a new format? I converted them as the Garmin guy told me to GPX but they just don't appear anywhere. If I try the KMZ files then I get the message saying they are not compatible.

I thought all garmins used .kmz files, I'll send them again mate and see how you get on.

Hey all,

I sent the KMZ files to Garmin who kindly converted them to GPX for me. I have now managed to import them so I am all good for Normandy ! :)
