So, out to the garage this morning to have a fresh look at the damage to the bike after yesterdays little prang (http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=175514) and.....not as bad as I'd first thought.

I thought this split was a lot bigger than it actually turned out to be.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a202/garynortheast/Bike%20pics/SV650/Crashrepairs_Feb_2012/resized_sv_crashrepairs1.jpg

Busted brake pedal and a lump missing from the fairing (I'll just dress the shape of the missing bit so it looks like it's meant to flow around the clutch cover)

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a202/garynortheast/Bike%20pics/SV650/Crashrepairs_Feb_2012/resized_sv_crashrepairs2.jpg

Took some wet and dry to the scuffed areas to flatten them prior to priming and rattle can spraying tomorrow.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a202/garynortheast/Bike%20pics/SV650/Crashrepairs_Feb_2012/resized_sv_crashrepairs4.jpg

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a202/garynortheast/Bike%20pics/SV650/Crashrepairs_Feb_2012/resized_sv_crashrepairs3.jpg

Used a soldering iron and some white zip ties to weld the splits up. It doesn't look pretty from the inside but it's solid.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a202/garynortheast/Bike%20pics/SV650/Crashrepairs_Feb_2012/resized_sv_crashrepairs5.jpg

Outside welds looked better once they'd been gone over lightly with a sanding disc.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a202/garynortheast/Bike%20pics/SV650/Crashrepairs_Feb_2012/resized_sv_crashrepairs6.jpg

Black marker pen put the colour back into the fairing bolt covers for now. I'll try and find another cover to replace this badly marked one though.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a202/garynortheast/Bike%20pics/SV650/Crashrepairs_Feb_2012/resized_sv_crashrepairs9.jpg

Temporary repair to the rear brake pedal with a chrome allen bolt, two stainless flange nuts and a piece of black rubber fuel pipe.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a202/garynortheast/Bike%20pics/SV650/Crashrepairs_Feb_2012/resized_sv_crashrepairs7.jpg

Realised when I started trying to find a replacement indicator lens that the ones on my curvy aren't standard.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a202/garynortheast/Bike%20pics/SV650/Crashrepairs_Feb_2012/resized_sv_crashrepairs8.jpg

Took me a while to find a match but found a pair of identical indicators for a tenner from Busters. Was going to try and find just the lens but the complete pair was so cheap I just went for them. Hopefully they won't take too long to arrive.

So tomorrow it's off to my local motor spares place Marks Auto Accessories (http://www.marksautoaccessories.com/) for a rattle can of blue. Mark can mix the paint there for me and while it's not a perfect match it's close enough until such time as I can afford a proper respray for the whole bike.

The only other thing I shall buy when I can afford it is one of these (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SUZUKI-GSXR-SRAD-SV650-GSXR600-GSXR750-REAR-BRAKE-PEDAL-/360392673029?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item53e913c705). They are a bit expensive I suppose, but this is the second time I've busted the brake pedal and one of these might save me from having to stump up for a replacement if I fall off again.

A Fixer-Peg is less than half that & you can transfer it to your next bike.
And the one after that!

Good job with the tie wraps. At least the clutch cover survived it! :)

Was just thinking that...

Whats your views on it?

Oh and that damage doesn't look to bad from here, fixing it up faster then I would.

They're damn good clutch covers, well made, robust, and they don't leak. Expensive though....

I know but I do like both the look and the practicality of the fold back brake pedals.

Took the fairing lowers off, filled the gouges and rubbed down with wet and dry.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a202/garynortheast/Bike%20pics/SV650/Crashrepairs_Feb_2012/resized_sv_crashrepairs10.jpg

Going to rub the rest of the panel back quickly now ready for a coat of primer.

Good work, looks tidy so far. You got colour match rattle tin or just close as?

The chap at my local auto spares shop has the spec sheet for mixing paints, including Suzuki's Grand Candy Blue. I've used a mix he's done for me before after my little altercation with a milk tanker about 18 months ago. It's not exactly the same but it is very close and good enough for me for now. I want to get the bike resprayed eventually anyway so this is a temporary(ish!) thing.

Now, a question! White spirit should be ok for degreasing the surface of the panels before I spray them shouldn't it?

Edit:
OK, going to answer my own question now. Consensus across the various fora to do with spraying and bodywork seems to be that white spirit leaves a residue so meths is what I've used after washing the panels down with Muc Off and clean water.

Might I ask what indicators you bought?
I want a set for my curvy SV as the stock ones are;
a) Fuggly
b) broken where i keep hitting them on my door/house/gate/me

They haven't arrived yet. I will probably fit them as the ones on the bike are a bit rusty inside so new ones might be a good idea.

Was it a set of: These? (http://www.busters-accessories.co.uk/productinfo/FMBKA/Bodywork/Indicators/On-Two-Wheels)
if so, i'll probably order a set for myself.

How are your fitted exactly (ie screwed or glued)?

They're the ones. The fairing has been drilled to accept the two small nuts and bolts designed to fix the indicators in place. Don't think I'd trust them to stay on if they were just glued.

Fairing lower keyed, degreased and ready for primer.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a202/garynortheast/Bike%20pics/SV650/Crashrepairs_Feb_2012/resized_sv_crashrepairs11.jpg

Four light coats of primer.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a202/garynortheast/Bike%20pics/SV650/Crashrepairs_Feb_2012/resized_sv_crashrepairs12.jpg

Eight light coats and now ready for the colour coat.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a202/garynortheast/Bike%20pics/SV650/Crashrepairs_Feb_2012/resized_sv_crashrepairs13.jpg

One of the two scuffed areas on the top fairing masked, keyed, degreased, and sprayed with 4 light coats of grey primer.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a202/garynortheast/Bike%20pics/SV650/Crashrepairs_Feb_2012/resized_sv_crashrepairs14.jpg

Another scuffed area below it to do yet.

Both the upper fairing areas now primed and ready for a topcoat. I'll put up with the marks left on the top area for now.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a202/garynortheast/Bike%20pics/SV650/Crashrepairs_Feb_2012/resized_sv_crashrepairs15.jpg

End of my nice adjustable dogleg brake lever took a bit of a scrape, I'll give it a prime and a coat of black paint.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a202/garynortheast/Bike%20pics/SV650/Crashrepairs_Feb_2012/resized_sv_crashrepairs16.jpg

Not much more I can do now until my indicators arrive and my rattle can of Grand Candy Blue(ish) is ready to collect.

Lowers sprayed - marked still, but covered. Don't yet know whether to bother with a coat of laquer.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a202/garynortheast/Bike%20pics/SV650/Crashrepairs_Feb_2012/resized_sv_crashrepairs17.jpg

Top fairing is now sprayed too, just need to remove the masking and blend the edges.

garynortheast, I was looking through the typical auction site and found these (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/270549495195#ht_1121wt_952)
Think that maybe they would suit the bike better?

That's what I have on the curvy and it's what I've just ordered a new set of from Busters.

Top fairing finished. Gave it a quick going over with T-Cut to smooth it out a little. Just waiting for my new indicators to arrive now.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a202/garynortheast/Bike%20pics/SV650/Crashrepairs_Feb_2012/resized_sv_crashrepairs18.jpg

I'll take advantage of the fact that the fairing lowers are off and give it a good wash while I can get at all those normally hard-to-reach bits when the fairing is on.

That's a good finish for spray cans! :)

I can never get a good finish painting

garynortheast

It's all down to preparation really. Unfortunately, my prep wasn't as good as it could have been and neither is the finish when you look closely....

garynortheast
04-03-12, 09:25 PM
And it's all back together again. New indicator fitted, couple of coats of double acrylic primer and black on the end of the front brake lever (blended well with the anodising),washed, and sprayed with FS365. Forgot to do the bar end weight though! :-? That'll be a job for later this week.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a202/garynortheast/Bike%20pics/SV650/Crashrepairs_Feb_2012/resized_sv_crashrepairs19.jpg

I shall find out whether or not I can operate the clutch with an injured thumb tomorrow.....

Very good job that, good luck with the thumb.

Just had a quick trip into Welshpool and back. Kept it upright this time and nothing fell off. Thumb hurts when using the clutch though so no long rides for a little while. :(

Thanks for the positive comments people. I have to say, it looks better in the photos than it does in the flesh. My SV is looking a tad battle scarred just now.

Last of the damaged bits replaced today. Nice new brake pedal with a spring loaded foldaway peg to replace my temporary repair to the old pedal.

Only just noticed this thread. You've done a good job there.

I've re-sprayed various car parts over the years. You'll never get a great finish with a can (up close), and it's very hard to get the finish smooth. But it is cheap.

If you ever decide to have a proper re-spray in the future (for this or anything else), you can also save money by doing all the prep and primer work yourself. Then you just pay for the paint coat.
