I was in Tescos the other day and bought a box of Tescos Finest Jumbo Porridge Oats as I have not had a bowl of it for ages . Today was the day I decided to cook up a batch . Now there are loads of ways to cook this , some will be stalwarts about this and demand that there is a "proper" way to do this . I don`t like to follow recipes to the letter as there is always a tweak you can do to adjust things to your own taste . I also never weigh anything out when it comes to things like this and prefer to cook by instinct ....... so here is what I did .

I read the instructions on the packet and instantly thought :smt067, scaroooh that . So I dumped some Milk in a pan (about a pint) and got the heat on . Poured a bit of Sugar into the Milk (probably enough to cover the palm of your hand) . Now we all know that Oats will expand massively , so when I poured them in I didn`t go mad with them , probably enough to make it look a bit "Watery" . By now the Milk should be sizzling at the edges of the pan so reduce the heat and keep stirring away (I use a square edged wooden spatula) . I then dropped a chunk of Butter in there so it melts in with the Milk and gets absorbed by the Oats . Taste the Milk mixture , it should be smooth and slightly sweet . Keep stirring and it will have started to thicken by now . I then opened the cupboard and found some 5 spice , a little dash of that just to enhance the flavour . I also dropped in about a Teaspoon of Maple/Pecan Syrup and a pinch of Salt and give it a good stir . By now it will be trying to catch on the pan so I lifted it up and kept stirring . The heat was then turned off when it still had some Milk "spare" in the mixture , the Oats were not quite soft . Left it to absorb and then returned to it 10 minutes later and plonked into a bowl . Right temperature to eat and OMG it was Superb .

What are your recipes for this stuff ?

And don`t bother with comments like "Hate the stuff" .... not interested .

regular porridge but just before serving put some chopped up fresh fruit in and mix then once in bowl put a dollop of jam in the middle.

for a real eye opener try savoury porridge (cooked bacon or smoked sausage etc.etc)

the list could go on but one thing i have not tried is chilli porridge.

For me

Oats in the pan, add skimmed milk brink to boil, simmer 5 minutes, serve.

As for buying named makes etc.why. Just simple rolled oates, same as I used to feed to the horses.

I follow the recipe on the bag with whole milk. Put some in a small sized bowl, put a bit more in a medium sized bowl and chill the bowl in ice cold water. The rest I heat up to boiling and serve in a very large bowl. Then I hide in the bedroom.

Oh, and I add raisins or syrup when serving.

Put it in a bowl with twice as much water as oats, bung it in the microwave for 3 mins then put a but of milk and honey on. Your recipes sound like way too much faffing about, if I am going to that much effort in the morning I may as well put some bacon on instead!

Love porridge. Scott's porridge oats I tend to use but not too fussy. Dorset's oats are nice too. For one serving: half a mug of oats, half a mug of milk, half a mug of water, bung in pan and keep stirring. Pinch of salt too. Keep stirring until whole mixture bubbling right through to the middle. Get a nice dollop of honey of golden syrup, put in serving bowl. Pour hot porridge on top (melts the syrup from underneath, nom nom. Sprinkle on cinnamon or allspice. I like sultanas/raisins/dried fruit in with it. Banana chopped up and cooked in with the oats can be nice on occasion too.

Not tried savoury porridge...might be worth a go if I'm feeling adventurous one morning :)

150ml water
150ml milk
Shop brand oats, 'about enough'

Heat in a pan, chuck in a chopped banana and a handful of sultanas mid way through.

Mix into a bowl with honey & cinnamon and a finer breakfast ye'll ne'er find.

My take on porridge.

1/3 fill a bowl with oats.
Add milk to bring up to 2/3 full

Add approx 1/2 teaspoons cinammon
Add any avaliable fruit for example
a grated apple
a grated pear
sultanas
Strawberrys, Raspberries etc,etc.

Microwave and stir etc until done.

Finally add approx a tablespoon of Balies.

Stir in and enjoy.
