Well, Custard has gone to a new home (Glad you're enjoying the bike Byron :)) & The Triumph didn't sell on Ebay, so is staying in the family. I had the chance to buy this 1996 CBR600 cheap. Completely standard, crash damaged, but eveything is nice & straight. It was only the front top fairing, clocks & headlamp that were damaged. I don't know whether to track it, or build something a bit special for the road. Poor thing has been left outside for the last 8 months, I'm hoping that the discs will clean up, just looks like surface rust. Anyway, here is project "Snotter"

Full rebuild?

Col, build a bike that can do both

mister c
12-03-12, 10:08 AM
Yup, will be a full rebuild. I am going to leave the engine in 1 lump though, don't touch what's not broken I think, just needs a good clean.
Bidding on a 916 tail piece & 954 Fireblade fairings at the moment, just have to wait to see if I win them :)
Possibly black frame & maybe...Luminous green paint :)

I always have visions in my head of the finished project, but this one's stumping me. I'll just play it by ear.

I work out of a shed (you can see what a dump my yard is) so you dont need a garage ;)

Geodude
12-03-12, 01:30 PM
I see you have the same shed as myself with the same missing/optional windows ;) I usually work under a big umbrella/parasol thing in the garden if the sky looks a bit dodgy but for a project i fancy a powered man cave i can hide in.

mister c

I'll be honest. I bought a big shed off Fleabay a few years ago that has taken up most of the yard, the little one in the picture wants taking apart & chucking away.
So, here is my little workshop now. I drag an extension from the kitchen so have got power when required.

Thought I would update this as I have been sourcing parts left, right & centre. The Idea I now have (after thinking about making it a cheap track bike) is to get her back on the road, but, as with Custard, with a twist.

Ok, here we are. I have completely stripped her down to just a rolling chassis & I've started with an Aprilia RS125 bikini fairing & Harris Clip ons.
https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/398828_3561943486715_1216657430_3533820_1973165536 _n.jpg

My son said it looked like an off roader, so have dropped the fairing down an inch or so.
https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/532213_3577636839039_1216657430_3540134_1194318839 _n.jpg

Front mudgaurd was broken, so have pared it down. I am going to have a play to make it look more "modern". I've bought a Dremel to do some cutting etc.
https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/522956_3561987807823_1216657430_3533830_435718863_ n.jpg

Brake discs are EBC Prolite, so I'm hoping that they will clean up ok. I have cleaned the calipers, they came up really well.

After.

Fitted my Gixxer1000 tail light.

Just waiting for my Gixxer1000 seat & tail unit, the bloke at UK Road & Race was very cagey when I rang him the other day to say that I hadn't received it, so just hoping that I haven't been shafted.

I've also picked up a CBR600 F4i set of clocks, which, the Americans assure me, virtually wire straight in.
https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/537346_3577775042494_1216657430_3540159_1689203996 _n.jpg

Just looking at how they should look when fitted properly. I'm on the lookout for some Aluminium sheeting to make a mount for it.
https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/468512_3579925416252_1216657430_3540781_592583979_ o.jpg

That's it for the time being. I am going to try & make a belly pan out of the original fairing panels, so will see how that turns out.

Well, not a lot to say really. This weekend was taken up with a quick rideout on the Triumph on Saturday, she then started to misfire, so came home & renewed the spark plugs. Local Suzuki dealer ripped me a new a-hole, charged me £10.30 each plug! Sunday was mainly spent fitting a new swinging arm in the Triumph after the chain adjusting screw decided to weld itself solid in the swingarm, but I did get to do a little on the CBR. I have now got the lights flush(ish) with the fairing & have also trimmed off the excess mounting points on the bottom of the fairing.

&, my seat unit has arrived, so the final part of the puzzle is here. It looks very narrow, so looks like we might be doing some more "fitting" lol :)

"It's the visions in my head I tell you" lol :)

Well, the Gixxer rear end is now in the bin. Usual story about getting what you pay for. The quality for the glass fibre was really poor. After doing a bit of cutting to try & make it fit, the seat unit just started cracking & then broke into more than 1 piece, plus the rear of the unit is a total gaff fit. To the companies credit, it is a racing seat, so doesn't need to be that good.

I am now bidding on some other ideas, so will see if they come to fruition.

mister c

I have now bought a 600rr tail piece, so just waiting for that to arrive. I've also received my 600RR shock which I've fitted to the frame, but don't think it will fit with the engine in, I'll offer it up this weekend to look at clearance. My Aprilia mirrors have arrived to, so fitted one to see what they look like.

Ok my seat unit finally turned up, so in a fit of excitement I had to dry fit it to see what it looked like. Quick word on the 600RR rear shock, we think it will fit if I remove the OE expansion tank & fit an HRC race one up front in the fairing, so will try that once I've got the engine back in. Bit of fabricating of seat brackets & I'll also lose the rear of the frame. There is 1 minus point.... I can fit the rear footpegs, so that means if I get it finished, the other half will want to go on the back ;)

Should be ok, I'm old & I didn't have any problems with the SV. Anyhoo, here's another update. Today I have been fabricating brackets left right & centre to fit the seat unit & tail light.

Frame cut, bent & rewelded in the right position. My welding leaves a lot to be desired (It's been a while :))
https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/557773_3673340671575_1216657430_3587777_1242705163 _n.jpg

Bracket welded on for the CBR600RR front seat. After welding it on I realised that I might have to move it because of the battery box, we'll see.

I should do templates really, but it's a case of offer it up, cut it & hope for the best lol. I was lucky that my old boss dropped a load of galvanised wall hanger brackets off at my shop, so I have quite a good supply of 2 - 4mm steel plate

Not too much done this past couple of days. The rebuild has started :). I have fitted the CBR600RR rear shock. This is a "suck it & see" exercise" as it has been talked about, but never done, so I'll see when the engine is fitted.
I also need to touch up a few areas of the frame that I missed when spraying it, but shouldn't be too difficult.

It keeps me sane & I'm not in front of the TV all night :)
The way I looked at it with this project was that the sum of the parts far outweighed the price I paid for the bike, so if it didn't work i could still make money on it by selling the bike off in bits.

Engine is coming into work tomorrow & will get a liberal blasting with the steam cleaner to get rid af years of road gunge & corrosion

After a recommendation from a friend I bought one for about £25 a bit like this from ebay:

Ebay linky. (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUTO-DARKENING-WELDING-HELMET-WELDERS-MASK-Solar-4001-Red-/160779121770?pt=UK_BOI_ProtectiveGear_RL&hash=item256f2eb46a)

Works fine, the one I bought was advertised as 'various colours', I'm still not a skilled welder by any means, but mine is a nice blue with natty hot rod flames up the sides, so now I am very cool* when I'm welding, and my face is on view less often - which is probably for the best.

*not.

Ebay linky. (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUTO-DARKENING-WELDING-HELMET-WELDERS-MASK-Solar-4001-Red-/160779121770?pt=UK_BOI_ProtectiveGear_RL&hash=item256f2eb46a)

Works fine, the one I bought was advertised as 'various colours', I'm still not a skilled welder by any means, but mine is a nice blue with natty hot rod flames up the sides, so now I am very cool* when I'm welding, and my face is on view less often - which is probably for the best.

*not.

Well, further update. My mate fixed me up with some ally plate to build a mount for my clocks. It was quite a big piece, so made an undertray for it.
Tried the cardboard method, but gave up & did it by eye.

Got the motor back in last night. Made a mental note NEVER to try it again on my own :) I'm aching in places I didn't know of. Sorted it in the end with the help of my B&D Workmate, 2 bottle jacks, a piece of wood & a trolley jack lol. I also won a main stand (yes, really) which will make tyre changing etc easier as mine had siezed solid & I had to take the hacksaw to it to remove. Hopefully over the weekend I will start on the new speedo & mount & start to rewire the old girl up.

It's an FT "N" Reg Loz. I tried a full sized plate on to see what it looked like. Pants was the answer, so had this off my 1st SV that I wrote off, looks a lot better this size

Well, I won a later model Aprilia fairing for £25, so had a quick play last night. I had to shorten the fairing bracket, so got to use my grinder & MIG welder & also found that the bracket is bent, so need to sort that as well. I still can't make my mind up with the look, but it's costing money now, so might just persevere. I should have put it on track I think, but never mind, I might like it once it's painted & finished.

It was the weatherman's fault. He said that it was going to be a crummy day yesterday, so I ventured into the shed instead of going out. The Americans fit these to their F3s, so good old Google came to the rescue with the clock wiring. I do need to get hold of a Fireblade temp sensor, then that lot should be sorted.
i went outside for an hour last night & wired the lights up too, so now have full electrics except for indicators, which don't work, so I'll have a look at the flasher relay to see it that's faulty, other than that, I think that it's a case of stripping her down & getting the bodywork off to my mate for painting.

I had big plans for this weekend, but that didn't happen. I worked Saturday & serviced the Triumph on Sunday morning. Sunday afternoon was spent tidying the wiring up, which is now done. I found out why the indicators didn't work....There was no flasher relay! I was lucky enough to have one in my toolbox. All of the wires have been soldered, so shouldn't have any issues.
So in 3 hours, we went from this

Spent some time on the Triumph yesterday, new chain & sprocket kit, plus a wash (2nd this year), so didn't get too much time on the CBR.
I have removed the low speed servo & pipework associated with it. This was a mass of pipes going to carbs etc. A few of them were for low speed running (up to 15mph) It also had a servo & a couple of small air boxes, which have now been dumped. Apparently this is a HRC modification for race bikes. I have fitted the headers & radiator too, so hopefully, in the next few days I will refill with coolant & oil, then see if she fires up :)
I must admit that I'm still not really "feeling it", so am not replacing bolts & cleaning parts up like I did with the SV. I just want to get it finished, MOT'd & then have a mess about on it.

Well, she lives :) How happy am I? Filled her with the required juices last night & tried to kick her up, but the battery was on the worst part of flat, so charged it overnight. I put it on this morning & after quite a lot of spinning over she coughed. My face lit up when eventually she fired into life. I couldn't rev her too much as it was 6.30am & I think my neighbours may have been round with hatchets lol. So, it's onwards & upwards with the Autosol & get the bodywork out to paint very shortly. :)

Had a couple of minutes spare last night, so had to go & see if she would start, just in case it was a fluke....She did, 1st prod of the button so I'm well pleased. Gave it a few more revs too ;) sounds really nice (For an IL4 :)) I have got to sync the carbs as it's running a little iffy. I have also found another little problem, the side stand switch isn't working, so that needs looking at, but, otherwise, it's looking good.

I might do that. I have got a spare though, so might put that on. Our American friends (& me now) wire the "FI" light on the speedo & use that as the sidestand warning light. Apparently it wont let the engine start if the light is lit

Right, well, I've been having some issues with the Triumph & also had to buy clutch plates, chain & sprocket & oil for her as well, so haven't had time, or the money to mess with the CBR over the past couple of weeks.
I have spent some time on her this weekend & sorted some things out (after spending 3 hours looking for an electrical fault that wasn't there :() Side stand switch is sorted & FI light works :). I have fabricated a couple of brackets to make the side panels fit flush & have made some for the Bandit Bellypan, which has been "Mister C'd" lol. I have fitted all of the cables etc, so it is now at the stage where it needs painting & I will start to polish some of the Ally bits too. So, as it stands, she is basically ready to go, just need a couple of handlebar grips & bits & bobs.
