Where can I get a cheap, universal reliable one? Are there any online which come recommended?
I use a strap wrench (http://www.diy.com/nav/fix/handtools-storage-workwear/handtools/plumbing-tools/plumbing_wrenches/B-and-Q-100mm-Strap-Wrench-11247647) its certainly universal & if you can figure out exactly how to use it it's not bad. I tend to forget every time.

After many disasters I use a cup one specifically for the oil filter size, they are only about £4 each which is worth shelling out compared to the hassle of a universal one

chain ones are better, I've had loads of strap ones break with seized on filters
I was cheap and went down to the local garage and asked to borrow their oil filter wrenches and they let me :D
Got myself a pair of oil filter pliers, think they cost me about £5

Started with a strap wrench, bit crap then moved onto a chain wrench...ok - then lost it and did the below

was about to say 'then I bought one' but I have a horrid feeling the one I have doesn't belong to me! will investigate, but yeah the filter 'sockets' are the way to go. Don;t overtighten it when putting it back on (you don't need any tools to reattach)

use K&N filters they have a nut on the bottom and you use a standard 13mm socket.
Other than that just stick a screwdriver through it.

Just hope you don't find it was put on by an absolute clown and has seized in place!

Thanks team! Anybody able to provide a link to a real cheap band/chain wrench that they've bought and are happy with?

Chain wrenches are OK but they can punch through the filter.
I hate punching filters off. A very sharp, very oily mess. Goes bloody everywhere, the oil attacks your skin ready to be cut to ribbons by the remnants of the can. Absolute last resort.
Get the cup wrench for removing them, put back on by hand.
Used Oil is a carcinogen
Don't get it on your hands

Some bikes, 600 Hornet being one, are are almost impossible to use a wrench on. There isn't enough room to the side of the filter for a chain wrench, and the exhausts get in the way at the end, in which case multiple holes with a screwdriver is just about the only way to go! If you compare the cost of the right wrench against the cost of the oil and filter, especially as you are going to use the wrench every few thousand miles, then it's a no brainer. Buy the right one for your bike.
I thought Halfords sold them?
