Have you seen Pandorum? It's the only sci-fi movie I can think of that is non-mainstream, most people haven't heard of, but is really worth a watch.

The trailer makes it out to be a psychological thriller, but that's only 50% of the story. The rest is dedicated to some properly brutal mutated humanoid spine eaters. :D

If you want some longevity, the stargate franchise is fantastic, but its a good 4 months to watch..

Event Horizon?

Good choice, I loved this film. Maybe not enough blood and splatter for DP but I thought it was great. Creepy, eerie and tense.

Agreed, it's the only choice and there's boobies in it :)

Could always go classic, quatermass, 1984, I like equlibrium and Brazil (both adaptations of 1984 concept) The last battle (slow and pedantic but draws you in) Hanger 18 (more conspiracy theory than scifi) Darkstar (John Carpenter)

If we're talking films (sorry for the derail) Could someone please explain Revolver.
I get that Jake greens enemy is his own ego and that his (and macha's) ego is personified by Mr Gold.
How many of the characters are real and how many are imagined? Its been suggested to that the loan sharks dont exist and are components from his imagination created in prison to maintain his sanity.

On a base level, green realisies his only enemy is his own ego and becomes enlightened, macha cant get to this point so kills himself, but this cant be it, is it?

Interesting topic. Here are some I watched and recommend:

Pitch Black - Vin Deisel: Dangerous Prisoner with shined eyeballs to see in the dark crash lands unto a seemingly uninhabited planet ... or is it?

Ganz - Japanese Sci-fi can be cool. People about to die in tragic accidents are transported to a nondescript room by a large, mysterious black sphere and given orders to take out aliens.

Splice - Here's something a bit different ... and a little uncomfortable. Any synopsis would not do justice so try it and see if you like it.

On a slightly different note, how about some of the classic series lije Space 1999, Buck Rogers in the 21st Century or the original Battlestar Gallactica.

Should be available on DVD I'm sure.

Biddle biddle biddle, ok Buck.

Babylon 5, Space:Above & Beyond, or go way, way back and look at Flash Gordon or the original Buck Rogers complete with spaceships on string and cliffhanger endings every time

Not full of violence and spaceships but Gattaca? Rollerball was pretty violent, the original. Fifth Element just for Milla

 Watched that (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0240890/) ages ago, don't think it's Dave's type of film.

Space above and beyond was a great war series, shame it got cancelled before the first season ended. The finale was written because they knew it wasn't coming back but still left enough to work with if it got a second run.

I've been waiting for this for what seems like years now. I'm a bit of an Alien fan, I've just replaced my Quadrilogy DVD with the BluRay version and I used to own the 1st three films on VHS, packaged in a black plastic "Facehugger" box complete with t-shirt, postcards etc. I also still have the novels for all four which are subtly different from the films because Alan Dean Foster seems to have worked from the original screenplay and for Alien 3 & 4, a lot of changes were made after that point - directors for example.

Don't believe the 'a bit of a fan' thing, the song Man or Muppet was written for DJ and the Alien films

Outland. Its got boobies, death, violence and Sean Connery.

Failing that, as has been said before, try The Thing (the Kurt Russell one)
