View Full Version : moonshine!

Seeing as there's a few home brewers on here I was wondering if anyone had attempted moonshine.

No, because its illegal & makes you go blind

I fail to see your point.... Snarf

I know

No, because its illegal & makes you go blind

I'd imagine that the latter would deter people more than the former. Plus there's a slight risk of explosion when distilling it.

I only want to start small, a couple of gallons until I have a good customer base

And no I haven't despite concocting some weird and wonderful stuff that's one thing i've never dabbled in.

Is that not what Reeder's mother said to him.

While I know a fair bit about this, the forum's probably the wrong place for chatting about it :)

A lot of the illegal booze out there at the moment is variously mixed cleaning fluids and other crap. Really not nice and not at all moonshine.

Distilling your own isn't hard, but can be slightly dangerous. No more expense involved in making high quality vodka than blindness inducing swill.

Yep, I saw a program about Bootleg Booze the other day, not the stuff from Calais hypermarkets, but the homebrew stuff.

For those who'er partaking the outlook for their brain, liver & kidney's is not good. A big percentage are students who don't need their brains. :pale:

Five oranges, five lemons, 5 potatoes, or was it five pounds.....five pounds a sugar......

My mind is hazy, not moonshine, maybe rocket fuel

Compared to supping yourself stupid with normal booze which has absolutely no ill effects!

A lot of the problems are methanol related. Properly distilled booze has less methanol in it than quality red wine. Honestly you would need to be an expert to tell it apart from premium vodka. Some my mate did you could not tell it apart from stolichnaya :)

Yes, the chemical analysis of the bootleg stuff was scary.

Bluepete

Foreshots and feints. Too much methanol in the start of distillation (foreshots) and too many impurities in the feints (end)

We have enough rubbish in our house without a brewery.
I told him to go find a forest somewhere and do it there.

Moonshiners is a surprisingly good show... Has anyone noticed how JT looks more like Tickle than his "dad"?

Listening to that sheriff describe the way the nip joints stamp on the liquor to make it go further with various nasties makes my curiosity about the stuff wane somewhat!

A bit of bleach never hurt anyone

Bluepete

Has Tickle been seen sober yet?

The show portrays them as Good ol' Boys making their way the only way they know how, but that's just a little bit more than the law will allow.

Popcorn seems like a real character too!

Not that expensive: Clicky (http://homedistiller.org/equip/photos-sold) Bit better than the crappy home made coils of copper tube I've seen, in Ireland this happens a lot. Not that I know anything about it, obviously.

Slight legal note: As I understand it, buying and owning a still is not illegal, using one to distill alcohol is*.

Just sayin',,,

*I could well be wrong about this, but, as I say - that's my understanding.

yorkie_chris

Don't use coils, use a coaxial reflux tube with raschig ring packing (get from aquarium people), dead easy especially if you have a lathe and TIG welder... but a file and solder isn't much harder.

SS i think your right on the kit post
Wouldn't touch it again after doing a bottle of Cossack (anyone older 30 will know this one) with the ex , famous for being perfectly drinkable and sent people blind. I was alright with it somehow.

Apparently it also causes significant brain damage and indecipherable speech patterns.

Either you're immune to it, or it explains a lot :-P

I love that Moonshiners show, they are so unbelievably stupid, they make the Gypsy Weddings look really sophisticated. Scary thought though I have seen plenty of adverts wanting people to take part in reality shows, all from posters in appropriate places for the people they are trying to attract. Where would you put a poster for Moonshiners, would it just have pictures and no words?
