Has anyone been up to Lochan Shira reservoir (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=lochan+shira&hl=en&ll=56.30473,-4.912262&spn=0.222846,0.617294&sll=56.34347,-4.927025&sspn=0.055655,0.154324&hnear=Lochan+Shira&t=m&z=11)? I saw a picture of it at work yesterday and thought I've GOT to go there :p

Looks amazing, but I dunno if it will be a private/closed road or not. Does anyone know?

I don't know but the road looks mental small. I remember Lochan Shira being mentioned on the news for a possible wind farm development some time back

If you do go, swing by Fyne Ales brewery!

Looks like the only way in is from the A83 9 miles south. When are we going

Always been tempted to head up that road just to see what Rob Roys house is like... Might have to pop up it on a monthly run... Only adds 16 or so miles to the route... Hmm it gets me thinking for Aprils run

That does look nice!... I was nearish there yesterday and day before. Headed up to Inveraray to stay the night, the hotel we were in had Fyne Ales and I had a couple which were pretty nice but we didn't stop into the brewery on the way home...

The George Hotel? Cosy, friendly bar with good beer.

Was up at Inverary a few weeks back myself, very nice for a run and an overnighter

Loch Fyne hotel, got a groupon deal with evening meal, brekkie etc and as we have been before we knew the food is pretty awesome! I have been meaning to make it into the George bar though, maybe next time!...

The best thing is you have to go in by Inverary so I can stock up on the best tablet in the world!
Depends on the weather. I was thinking this weekend if it's nice. No point heading all that way for it to be cloudy or rainy :)

Exactly! :p

Route 2 of march madness would have been perfect! It would have gone right past the reservoir road then right through Inverary for some tablet :D

Enjoy the walk ;)

Look again using street view from the A83 up the road, no entry signs just past the "dirt track" as its the service road up to the reservoir

Starting from the mouth of the Glen, a track, now a fully surfaced road leads all the way to the dams at Lochan Shira. This was one of the first hydro electric schemes and was built, according to local information, by all sorts of offenders, army deserters and other undesirables. Many died there and are buried in unmarked graves.

Glen Shira holds the remains of Rob Roy MacGregors house, a gift from the Duke of Argyll for his services. It is now just a pile of rubble, difficult to find and often mistaken, as there are also the ruins of an old croft nearby. If you want to have a look take care, the approach is steep and the wooden footbridge across the river will not see out many more winters. The views back down Glen Shira are well worth the long trudge. It does become tedious walking on what is now a well surfaced road so recourse to the map gives you the chance to climb up to the ridges and tops that overlook Glen Shira

Is it a public road to get up there?

Kilted Ginger
22-03-12, 11:36 PM
Well thats debatable, its a service road and as such probably belongs either to scottish water or forrestry commission although it could be a public road (to farms etc) that has been upgraded or maintained by them fro their vehicles.
Either way I say we go up it. If we are asked to leave we leave.

Its a Hydro road, as long as you dont misbehave no one will bother you. Gravel , dung etc all the usual B road gems.
Shira dam was built on bread and jam, so the the song goes. For background flavour read Moleskin Joe.

If one of the routes next month runs past it I'm sure we could take the small detour :)

Better start thinking about next months routes.

Ok no worries. Halfords have honda ones that you can use. That's what I have in mine. You just have to disconnect the two wires from the loom and use them

Maplins, on Central Retail Park (Tesco, McDonalds) in Falkirk may have them. I was in our local Maplin getting bits recently, and I noticed that they had them on the shelf.

Marc, I have one, that didn't work right on the Daytona, and I was going to stick it back on ebay but I've never got round to it. If I can find it and Sandrine hasn't packed it away in a box for the move already, it'll be in the post on Monday. Not sure if it suitable for your LED's on the SV or not. Give me a few minutes and I'll post a link.

OK, forgot you were going to Dereks.

Well if I don't find it, it'll reappear when I unpack at the other end and I'll send it up then. It's worth a try.

I've the honda FRU1 fitted at the moment that was working fine but tonight all indys are flashing that fast they are on constantly. It may be the honda relay or it may be the suzuki unit, hence the plan to replace the suzuki one with the ebay link and remove the honda one.

Mrs just bumped it down the priority list anyway as the dishwasher has decided to start leaking tonight, ffs, never rains and all that.

Went up today. You can get up to the damn no bother. There are houses all along the road so it seems like a public road to me. Just watch out for the gravel and potholes. If you go up past the dam it's just a dirt track. Worth a look though :)

The big dam is Shira, the wee one Is Sron Mhor, Sron Mhor was an experimental pump storage station, but is now a straight hydro. This water heads out on pipes down to Clachan power station near the shore of Loch Fyne just around the oyster and tree shops.
