Calling all org "gun nuts",
first off are there any ? where do you go shooting ? is there a massive roll of red tape that makes it all pointless for a hobby?
Its something im very interested in getting my FAC and im just finding out the best way and the best clubs around my area. i have done some air rifle shooting in my younger years (RAF Cadets) but just not had the time and money.
so any advice would be very welcome :)

Join a club. I used to shoot pistols pre Dunblane and there were issues of local policy vs the law. Lancs had a no more than 6 on a FAC policy. A move for a year to Telford and came back with 9 so little Lancs could do there after until Hungerford made 2 of my rifles worthless.
You would generally need to have completed a probationary membership of a club before applying for a FAC. and be realistic. You need an approved rifle store securely fastened to the walls assuming you are to keep the rifle at home. I had a massive safe in the garage that was ground anchored to the re-enforced concrete base.
Some forces like you to secure the bolt away from the rifle/ammunition etc.
Be warned it is an expensive hobby. We used to load our own ammunition to reduce cost.
havent done this for years, I did pick up a shiny medal some time ago after topping the leaderboard at Bisley shooting 7.62mm L81 rifles.

Before you can apply for a FAC you must have a good reason to own or want to own a rifle,
First thing to do is to find a local rifle club and join them, this can be very difficult as there is often a long waiting list, or you end up travelling a fair way to find one.
Then after their specific training and education periods you may be supported for your FAC, however you will mostly find this is limited to .22 rifles, and they may occasionally do large bore shooting but this is very rare.
Alternatively if you can find some land and a farmer who will let you shoot, you may be able to get a rifle for pest control purposes, but again, you would be lucky to get anything over .22 for normal use, even slightly larger .233 are for deer or fox.
My FAC is going through at the moment on the basis of having 300 acres to shoot on, and I have applied for a .17 HMR, not big but very very effective.
Do your research, start to network and get your face in the clubs and good luck.
Cheers

i have found a few clubs in and around west yorkshire so will get signed up and start "networking"
are there any national website which are good a reliable source of information? wouldnt want to sign up somewhere which could get me in trouble.
would i be better (for my self learning wise as well as when applying for FAC) going smaller and working my way up or is that just wasted time and money as it makes no difference to what ive used in the past?

they will only grant you a slot on your FAC for the rifle you need, if you start shooting big bore, big bore is what you could apply for, if you start with .22 or .17 and have no need for a bigger gun they wont grant you a FAC slot for one...

You will probably find your your local small bore range will do the odd full bore during the summer months. whilst 25/50 yards with a .22LR will get you use to aim/balance is is nothing like using a full bore on 300,500 and upto 1000 yards where external influences like wind matter so much.
