View Full Version : £350 to spend : Suggestions from the Org...

Our syndicate came up on the lottery. 5 numbers, £2000 which is £400 each. :D:D:D:D:D:D

I've paid all my bills so feel I should spend my winnings on something fun.

I have already decided to donate £50 to the East Anglia Air Ambulance in memory of Reeder.

So now I have £350 to play with. Here are some ideas I've already come up with, but I'm sure you guys can give me some entertaining suggestions!

A new lens for my camera - a nice lightweight 18 - 250mm so I don't have to lug the heavy L series monsters around when I'm on holiday.

Have a cat flap fitted to my double glazed door for my moggies - yes, I really have received a quote for £345 for this!

Buy a bicycle and start riding to the station to get fit and tone up my bum.

Get botox to get rid my of my 'Blue Eagle from the Muppets' frown lines and a fake tan so I can get that TOWIE look - I do live in Essex you know.

Purchase a pair of Spanx control pants and 250 Cadbury Creme Eggs and eat the lot before Easter while the magic knickers hold my belly in.

Come on Org - what do you suggest?

For practicality, the cat flap... it'll only cost you later if you don't.

Not sure about the spanking pants - do you charge??

But for me, its got to be the creme eggs

I would have thought you'd be able to buy a ready made panel with cat flap fitted for much less, rather than having one retro fitted to your existing panel?

When I moved into my house one of the mouldings on the inner panel of the pvc door was cracked - I got round to replacing it just before xmas - £70 for the panel delivered (from ebay) and took about 20 minutes to fit. A pvc door company would probably fit it for you if you sourced it, just make sure the measurements are right :)

As for other options, why not an experience or spa day? Go clay pigeon shooting or quad biking, go on a mini break somewhere, hire a camper for a weekend and head off camping maybe?

Over the last 2 years or so I've realised I'd rather spend money on experiences & memories than material stuff which ends up in the spare room. But as my disposable income is very little I have to buy street drugs from shady characters to get the best experience/£ ratio. Bit moreish though :smt116

cat flap to a dg door is a doddle, no way it should cost that much.

How about snow boarding lessons at the various indoor venues? :-)

£350 would get a nice city break for 2 in budapest, copenhagen or the likes.

I am just having a new glazed panel made so I can have a cat flap! It's costing Mr £100+vat for the panel that was for a toughened argon filled unit, and the day flap was 15 delivered. The glazing company will for the cat flap to the new panel. Just make sure that the catflap is for a round hole. You can't cut a square hole in a double glazed unit.
The rest you can spend on creme eggs and control pants!!

Just replace the glass with an insulated pvc panel, then cut it yourself, cuts very easy.

Then send the rest of the money to me to spend on fried brekkies and donuts.

fit the catflap through a wall, will be cheaper than into the glass.

don't they all have 3 foot thick stone walls in those posh houses darn souf'?

Littlepeahead

The cat flap needs to go into the door in my conservatory which has one full legth pane of glass. As the walls are glazed too there aren't enough bricks to fit a cat flap big enough - which is actually a small dog flap as my cats are massive great lumps of cuddliness each weighing in at over 7.5kgs.

Get a tattoo across your chest saying "I won the lottery so bought this tattoo".

Hmm, thinking about this having typed it, it's quite long so the feasibility will be determined by the size of your chest and lo, we're into hole digging territory so I'll stop right here...

Thinking a little more about getting myself out of this hole I've dug...

You obviously like cats (and quite right too - they're lovely).
How about doing a zoo experience - feeding big cats. I did it and hand-fed a tiger (39stone, 9feet long), cheeters, and just lobbed a load of horse into the lions and pumas (they're both too evil to hand feed).

It was one of the best experiences of my life. I loved it.

Point 1: I suspect I've been thinking about Reeder too much and his personality has corrupted my psyche.
Point 2: Talking or quoting oneself is probably a sign than I need to get help.

A cat flap? That would make a nice present for a dyslexic yorkshireman.

I'd go for the 18-200mm.

How about;

"I won the lottery so bought this tattoo. We've split it, I've donated some and had some left to spend. I was thinking of maybe a cat flap but looking for suggestions"

...as a tattoo. :-) Does that widen the previously dug hole any?

or even "I won the lottery *", then following popular convention you need to go look down near the errr bottom to look for the small print ;-)

Further to previous suggestions...

I've played with big cats a couple of times, most recently in Thailand last year where I stroked a full grown tiger and played with the cubs. I've also done a photography course at a zoo where I got to go into the cheetah enclosure which was amazing.

I've also tried quad biking which was fun, and dry slope - which wasn't as I spent most of my time on my backside and right now my post op foot would stop me doing it.

Already got a spa thing planned for later in the year for a hen weekend, and as I'm a guinea pig for our local beautician college I've already had a facial and reflexology this week and I'm booked in for India head massage and a body massage next week. Basically I get pampered for £10 a time.

I did the camper van thing round New Zealand with a mate, not thought about trying it over here though.

I blew the rest of the money today.

First off all I decided to renew my Membership at Essex CCC which is about £140. If we get a nice summer I shall enjoy spending my time dozing in front of the Pavilion.

Then I passed the camera shop and they had a second hand 18 - 200mm Sigma superzoom in the window £167. Although I own a Canon 10-22mm, 105mm macro, 24 - 70mm 2.8 L series and 70 - 200mm 2.8 IS L series with 2 x extender I think the superzoom will be great for holidays and when I don't want to carry around heavy lenses. The quality won't be as top notch as with the L series but I also won't need a new spine at the end of every trip.

England head coach Andy Flower is running the London Marathon for 3 charities. We're good mates so I've sponsored him £1 a kilometre - that's about £42 and they can reclaim the tax.

And the East Anglian Air Ambulance will have received a cheque for £50 c/o the understakers who arranged Reeder's funeral.

So with my jeans I've ended up spending more than my winnings, but it's a nice mixture of days out watching my favourite team, fun with my camera and donations to 4 charities to help those in need.

Of course none of this will tone up my bum.

Do you (anyone) think people are more charity minded than they used to be?

keith_d
07-04-12, 05:11 PM
I wouldn't bother with the 18-200. Save up for a month or two and buy the 10-24mm to take on holiday.

Superwide zooms are brilliant holiday lenses for interiors, landscapes, and because they allow you to get right in the middle of things and shoot wide.

Keith.

Littlepeahead
07-04-12, 05:43 PM
Keith, I have the 10 - 22 Canon lens already. Cost me a small fortune, so now my range, if I were to take all my lenses, is 18 - 400mm!

The wide angle is nice and lightweight anyway, so that and the 18 - 200mm means I can get everything in one small bag, but as I have a 30D and 60D, for work I have the option now of 24 - 70 L series on one and 70 - 200mm L series on the other which saves changing lenses over.

As for the question of people being more charitable, I guess I have always given money to charity but this time I decided to make 2 larger donations, in addition to the monkey I sponsor at a Sanctuary I volunteered at and sponsoring friends every year for their runs etc.

That's a cool set of lenses. Last year I tried lugging my Nikon 28-70 AFS around Utah. I'm sure that thing has it's own gravitational field... :crutches:

So I can see the attraction of a super zoom, but I suspect I'll be taking the big lump with me next time. It's just too useful.
