View Full Version : What are my cats killing - warning, contains gory photo

As the title suggests, last night Iggle and Piggle were very pleased with themselves as they brought me this, along with a limbless torso of another chick. Then this morning they brouhgt an indential dead chick in. I'm not sure if they have found these on the ground, raided one nest several times or are on a general killing spree but can anyone tell me what sort of birds these are?

I have shouted at both of them but they seem to think that these little gifts are the cat equivalent of a yummy Cadbury's Creme Egg and show me how much they love me!

My cats do it all the time.
You're lucky it's in one piece.
My little darlings like to leave their gifts scattered over an off white carpet...

That was one of the whole ones. And there was plenty of blood from the one with no limbs. I got Mr LPH to clear it up as he was the one who forgot to feed them before he went out to the pub.

F***ing cats killing everything. You should keep your pets under control.

euugh! green feathers? summat exotic or starling chick?

Cats are pest control, mainly used for killing off baby rats, I do praise ours when it does so, but it gets a kick up the bum when it brings anything of value to our planet :)

This is why I have copious amounts of barbed wire all over the bird boxes in my garden. Last year both blue tit families were about to fledge when their boxes were raided by a cat I've never seen before or since. Watching the blue and yellow blurs whizing in and out with food for a few weeks was wonderful - picking up the remnants from the floor was not.

I feed the birds and normally the cats leave well alone which is why I wonder if this one nest was low down or easily accessible. I would have thought that they were too big and cumbersome to sneak up on a nest without breaking the whole tree in the process. When they jump on the fence the whole thing wobbles and I'm worried it sets off a small tsunami somehwere in East Anglia.

This photo is of an 18" wide flowerpot containing a tree and he can hardly fit in it!

55 million, yes million!, birds are estimated to be killed by cats each year in the UK alone !

Fecking things should be strung up.

My old cat once tried to catch a squirrel, it stalked it for a bit, I banged on the window & the squirrel looked over as if to say 'I know'. Then when it got about a meter away the squirrel jumped up & ran a circle around the bemused cat who then ran as fast as she could back into the house. I ****ed myself laughing

Have you thought of a collar with a bell? Won't stop it getting chicks but it'll give other birds a bit of a warning

Good job the cat got it whilst it was still a baby. That thing is a velocoraptor and known to lay waste to small villages...

I have got bells but took them off the collars as the jangling every night in bed drives me mad but I'll put them on again tonight to see if that helps, but as you say, the chicks are easy prey. The black bird and robin tend to dive bomb the cats if they get too close.

Perhaps I could get this swan to come and stay for a few days - that'll put them off getting near any birds ever again.

My cats have the coolest collars. After riddng themselves of sparkly ones and glittery ones and velvet ones and jewelled ones, probably because they are ruftly tufty boys and thought they looked a bit gay, I bought them these for halloween and they have stayed on. They are stretchy and do up with velcro so they would come off if they got caught, and they glow in the dark!

They have lots of designs and you can buy them here:

All my cats have had quick release collars with disks, over the years I have spent a fortune on them, but I stopped using them last year when one of them came home and it was obvious he had sustained some cuts from being stuck somewhere.

Always had glow in the dark collars, but they can't help when they get caught climbing up a tree and hung, which is what I suspect happened :( It had gotten under his armpit and still round his neck before it released, he was a bit sore, and I never put another on after that.

Wild cats lived in trees before we domesticated them so they are by nature very good at climbing. I have removed most of the non-native trees and hedging in my garden and replaced them with items the birds can use to nest in. Hawthorn is a bugger to prune without scratching the hell out of my arms but it does give some predator protection!

Might invest in a sonic cat deterent this year as one of the boxes is near my shed and a handy power supply.

LPH - have you considered letting your cats out but attaching then to a suitable length of bungee cord? Safeguards some of the wildlife and will provide hours of snikering as they try and fail to reach something and end up in a heap by the kitchen door.

Littlepeahead

Mr LPH planted 2 hawthorn bushes last night as we were told they are very bird friendly.

Anyone who has every tried to push a tablet down a cat's throat will know that getting them to do anything they do not wish to do may require an ambulance - and not for them.

The two of them now do a trick to get a Dreamie biscuit treat. They will stand on their hind legs and clap their paws together or give me a high 5. It's very cute but then I am easily manipulated.

Hmmm, deterrent and bungee cord. One crossbow and spool... hours of entertainment.

If you've managed to teach them to do that it should be easy to teach them that bringing dead birds into the house means a hit on the head with a golf club. Start with a putter but if they persist don't be afraid to move up to a driver, maybe one of those Slazenger metal woods (bigger sweet-spot)

I like cats, I'm sorry your dog has had a bad life before you but I'd rather hate anyone who abused an animal than a creature who is following it's natural instincts.

People mentioned crossbows & air rifles and using them on animals, that doesn't seem too nice to me

No, its not, and frankly if I kicked them in the head then asked them if it hurt, after I'd taped their gob shut, then they might have an understanding how an animal feels when its having a vet remove pellets from its body:smt019

Oh I know but if I'm being complained about for criticising a dog being attacked by a cat then I may as well bring it up, otherwise none of us will write anything for fear of offending someone.

If you've got tree rats destroying your bird feeders and crows ripping your roofing felt up you're perfectly correct to shoot them with an air rifle.

I've done it, and done it humanely. I've also done for plenty rabbits and woodpidgeons that have ended up in my belly :)

I haven't nailed any cats to the fence with a crossbow yet, though I reckon they're just as much a pest leaving their stinking turds about the place. And I reckon a crossbow would be a decent and humane way to do it. (Any non-FAC, i.e sub 12ft lb air rifle is NOT going to get a humane kill on a cat, so shooting cats with an air rifle is bang out of order.)
The inevitable whinging about it and probable court appearance would be a right inconvenience though.

What I reckon I need is some (humane, ish) way to trap any cats passing through. Then if they are wearing an ID tag I will put them in a sack and nail it to the owners front door.
If not I'll sell the little moggy b*stards to the curryhouse.

I like all animals, apart from earwigs. I know the cats are following an instinct. Just wish they wouldn't as I like the little birds.

If I owned a 150lb rottweiler and I let it savage stuff in peoples gardens, they would quite rightly play f*** about it. Don't see why cats should be excused to do the exact same thing.

We have (has to count) 7 cats at the moment.
They have the run of just over an acre and keep the small creatures down to a minimum. Suffice to say, there are no mice in our house.
They are great killers!!!
Sometime ago I was telling my wife's grandfather I had tried everything but could not rid one of our out buildings of snakes. His responce, "Got cats? Feed them inside that building"

Sorry if my cats keeping the moles out of my garden, and the mice and snakes to a minimum on the property offends anyone. :p
They are all really sweet when they're in the house. ;)
But they are hunters as mother nature intended them to be.

Should cats all be kept inside? Just imagine the over run of bird and mice populations if they all were.
It's the balance of nature. The planets way of taking care of itself.
Should the prey creatures all have equal rights?
Should the trees all be kept all the same size?

No more little gifts so I suspect they found one easy access nest and emptied it.

Last night they played with their bungee mouse instead, then this morning Iggle poked me in the eye in bed to wake me up, then when he got told to $od off he proceeded to spend five minutes licking his bum before coming back up the bed and giving me a big smoochy face rub.

And there is research that shows that cats provide stress relief - I'm not sure how though!
