View Full Version : Is there anything at all to be cheerful about?

Recession is ongoing and worsening in my experience..
Taxes all seem to be going one way..
Government doesn't have a clue what they're doing causing panic..
We're already at peak oil (probably past it) so we're going to see fuel crises more regularly..
Traditional weather patterns have basically gone - it was like summer last week, so by my calculations it will be snowing this time next week..
Vehicle insurance doesn't seem to be getting any cheaper despite people raving how great it is when you're getting towards the latter bit of your 20's with 9/10years NCBs..
We're only on this planet for a brief fart in the order of time - what a waste of energy and potential.
Is there some kind of secret happy club keeping everyone chipper by handing out free smoothies? Or have the masons started doing the conga at their meetings to maintain morale?
What have you got to be cheerful about? Give me some inspiration.
Oh and just to make it extra challenging, here is a slide from a powerpoint presentation which was shown at a conference on education last week.

Blimey guys, the thread title isn't "I'm going to top myself" lol, just asking for reasons to be cheerful. And Bibster, glad you're in a good position. My office has no windows, the water bill at home has gone up again, I owe a shedload of cash to my mortgage lender and despite interest rates being at 0.5% since late 2008; because I'm a first time buyer I'm locked in at 6.6% til late next year. Maybe that's why everyone else seems to have so much more money than me at the minute.
Oh and my bikes engine blew up. Not upset about the material stuff, just the invisible stuff which the media & the government perpetuate.
Decided to stick it to the man. I've just ordered TiVo from virgin media & it's coming on wednesday - in time for start of BSB. F*** you David Cameron.

Reasons to be cheerful?
Some of Buddy Holly, the working folly
Good Golly Miss Molly and boats
Hammersmith Palais, the Bolshoi Ballet
Jump back in the alley, add nanny goats
Eighteen-wheeler Scammels, Domineker camels
All other mammals plus equal votes
Seeing Piccadilly, Fanny Smith and Willy
Being rather silly and porridge oats
A bit of grin and bear it, a bit of come and share it
You're welcome, we can spare it, yellow socks
Too short to be haughty, too nutty to be naughty
Going on forty, no electric shocks
The juice of the carrot, the smile of a parrot
A little drop of claret - anything that rocks
Elvis and Scotty, the days when I ain't spotty,
Sitting on the potty, curing smallpox

.
My mothers water rates has gone up to over 800 quid for the year!
I feel sorry for you with that amount of shafting over your mortgage
Bike....yeah I have a tank with the pox on it in the boot of the car, and another sat in a box to replace it in the living room......frickin hate spending on replacements when I ain't got the brass, but feck it, its only frinkin money!!
That island in the Med calls more every day...............only thing that puts me off is its 20 odd miles away from Syria. I'd far rather be poor in a sunny and pretty country, than be poor in this miserable, wet sh11ty country!

Financially, I am screwed. I have a job that is hard work, but does not pay what I am worth and every year that passes I see our freedom and liberty being slowly chipped away, all in the name of our safety. The people I love are dying, I am disowned by half of my family for being me and my Mother does not approve of my Girlfriend. When I go back to work next week, I know that I do not have another Holiday until August.
Yet how do I maintain this numb smile?
Simple... Fluoxetine (http://www.drugs.com/fluoxetine.html). Nothing matters anymore when you have large doses of Fluoxetine every day of your life. Citalipram (http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/depression/medicines/cipramil.html) is also good for blocking out the horrors of modern life.
When Depression is so prevalent you have to start asking what is wrong with society that it makes every one so unhappy?
Just remember what Orwell wrote in the classic Futurist novel 1984.
There will be no love, except for the love of Big Brother. There will be no laughter, except for the laugh of triumph over a defeated enemy. There will be no art, no literature, no science...
There will be no distinction between beauty and ugliness. There will be no curiosity, no enjoyment of the process of life. All competing pleasures will be destroyed...
If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face, forever.
So sit back and relax with this. (Warning: it has one slightly rude word at the end. However with in the confines of the video, it is both relevant and necessary as valid artistic statement.)

I got a free Aero mint bar on the way to work this morning.
I'm missing Download for AR but Soundgarden decided to play Hyde Park as well to keep me happy and I got tickets today.
Chris Cornell in a tight vest - that's what life is all about.
And Jambo has just had a baby and every time I see the pics on Facebook they make me smile.
(And I tried Fluoxetine but it makes me dribble so I stopped taking it).

There will literally be no excuses or last minute shopping trips or visits to the inlaws which could possibly stop me from watching the GP, BSB, WSB, Isle of Man TT or other generic racing events..
"It's recorded so I can watch it when we're not busy - pick a day when you're not bothered about seeing me...." muhahaha..
I'm in Canada! :-) at the last election, I voted... with my feet! :-)

Lol, just read through the whole thread. Theres nothing like technology to cheer a chap up. I'm thinking of getting Virgin myself with some BIG broadband :)
Since I stopped living on the internet reading depressing threads I've been much happier :D
I also stopped being a tight **** and started living for the day... this also has completely changed me. I used to forever worry about losing my job, or being made redundant, no matter how unlikely it was. So all I ever used to do was save and worry about money. Now I just live to my means and enjoy myself.
One thing that has helped me more than anything else though is setting myself challenges and goals. It gives you something to aim for, you achieve it and it's an amazing feeling... then you set harder ones.

Nice! I'm with the devil himself - Talk Talk, I'm paying for 8mb, speed test come out at around 4 despite BT telling me I'm really near the exchange so I could get hyperspeed over the phone line. When I complained to Talk Talk they told me I'd have to pay more for a higher speed. I asked them why I should pay more to get the speed I'm already paying for so essentially I'm then paying more to not get an even higher speed . Oh my god I hate Talk Talk, I really really really hate Talk Talk. I left talk talk & went with Tiscali who then got bought by talk talk!! I HATE TALK TALK HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE.
(In case it isn't clear i've had a few bad experiences with them) I'm off to phone Virgin

"Live 'till you die."
Pretty basic quote, but it sums it up for me.
The baliffs aren't at the door.
I've had one of my favourite teas - ssshh, don't tell the boss but it was a Big Mac & fries.
I've just poured a large JD
I'm playing golf tomorrow forthe first time in 4 months
Out on the bike on Sunday
I could add plenty about the lovely family and friends I've been 'blessed' with.... life's excellent.

Talk Talk were much better when they were a band, specially singing (and I think you'll all agree, appropriately for this thread) "Life's What You Make It"
I now weigh more than I ever have before, have a dodgy hip, and have been taking 40 mg of citalopram for over 2 years.
However, have just got a a promotion and payrise backdated to 1st Jan, so for the first time in my life I am now earning £1k for each year of my life. Have just come back from a fab holiday in Key West & Miami. Have got a test ride on the new Triumph Explorer tomorrow, and a big launch event for SERV Wessex on Sunday. Have got some great friends, and the best wife in the world.
Life is good.

Life is like a roller coaster for me at the moment.
Work is hard, constantly doing 60hr weeks. However it should pay off. No time to see my wife and kids, the strain is starting to show.
A week in Scotland coming up on the bike to look forward to, ending with the GM :)

We're only on this planet for a brief fart in the order of time - what a waste of energy and potential.
No mate. We're here for trillions of years. Once we die, and get cremated or buried, our atoms fuel the next generation of living things. And those that don't, become buried in the depths of the earth's crust until, in millions of years, the Earth is destroyed in the cataclysmic explosion of our sun, sending our remnants through the universe. Covering light years, we impact planets and become part of their geology, hit stars and become vapours fuelling their solar system, or fly into the depths of a black hole, waiting for the universe to explode and get recreated once more.
In a way, we live forever. Just depends how you look at it and how you feel about the infinity of space and what significance you place on yourself and your life.
At least, that's how I try to feel about death, since I am no theist.
