2008 SV650s - broke chain, clutch don't work, oil spill - need help to fix

so one day i was riding -

hear a loud noise, all of a sudden im not accelerating, my left lever (clutch) is loose like the cable broke / not working

and oil is spilling on the ground - not good at all

pull over and get the bike to my garage!

don't know how or why this happened, probably cause i didn't do proper maintenance or who knows! im a noob so whatevers

I want to try to fix it myself and i understand that it will be difficult but i was hoping some of you could tell me where to start -i purchased a repair manual and was hoping some of you could tell me what i should look at first or how i should go about this ! all advice is welcome , im a noob and i want to learn to i hope you can either help me , or point me in the right direction

Right, first off if you have broken the chain it isn't the clutch cable that has gone, there is a bar, that runs just in front of the front sprocket and that is what moves the clutch as it is on the opposite side of the bike relative to the clutch cable, which would have broken.

I know as I had a chain snap on my old SV and the chain took out this bar.

The issue you have is that this need replacing as it isn’t a simple job, so, a professional might need to be sought if you are a “n00b.”

Also, you need to provide more detail on your bike’s oil leak, where is the oil coming from?

You might have broken the casing near the front sprocket if the chain snap was particularly violent.

i think , the chain hit the crankcase - im not sure though , I don't know where to check or how to really, i tried to look on youtube , but was unsuccessful - ive considered taking it to a shop but id rather do it myself

i feel like it would be very expensive

which is why i got the repair manual and hopefully with this forum and some elbow grease i could get it done... maybe just wishful thinking..

what would be the easiest way to check???

Take it to a shop. If you don't know how to check whether there's a big hole in your engine then it unlikely you'll be able to fix it yourself.

the above is correct, it'll be the transfer rod that's broken, this will leave the wormdrive without tension hence the slack cable, you'll need to remove the front sprocket cover to see what the extent of the damage is, it could be just leaking oil from the transfer rod seal (as now there is no rod in the cente of it), but it could also mean part of the rod is inside the casing and needs fishing out.

Although your first consideration should be why the chain snapped? has it been recently changed? or was it at the end of it's adjustment? or just lack of proper care?

If you don't find out what caused the problem, there's a good chance it'll happen again.

your probably right Mr Speirs but I still would like to try to go about it myself first

i haven't really looked at it too hard, but just visually i don't see much other than the chain is of the sprocket!

i want to try to do as much evaluation as i can and see if i can fix it before i take it to the shop - its more of a learning experience for me , i don't need it to be fixed anytime soon so im willing to learn what not!

so any advice one where i would start?

ok so transfer rod is broken!

remove front sprocket cover and check for damage! - i will take this as my first step

I do not know why it snapped... i think maybe not proper maintance , i admit i was rather lazy with lubing my chain and inspections - :(

You will need to change the transfer rod, so, this is going to involve somewhere were you can take the clutch cover off and take the clutch out IIRC

Pics? .... Is part of the rod still sticking out of the case?. Considering your lack of maintaince can you clean up the area behind the sprocket cover and visually check it.

I had this happen to me a few weeks ago, chain was goosed after winter riding - inspected it, ordered a new chain and sprocket kit. While waiting for new chain took it a blast and it slipped off the rear sprocket.

Ended my day sitting beside the road with oil leaking like yourself. Couldn't pull my clutch in either. Luckily my chain missed smashing the crankcase and broke the clutch push rod instead. Which i'm hoping is what's happened to you, because it's a relatively easy fix.

I have little or no experience of mechanical repairs, but through reading this forum and many youtube videos I managed to fix my problem by two simple things;

1. Replaced the 'outer' clutch push rod (the one you see when you take the sprocket cover off) it was split in half.

2. Replacing the clutch push rod seal, to get to this you need to remove a metal plate, held on by 3 bolts.

I got the rod and seal for about 15 quid or so from fowlers, not sure if they are the cheapest but they have them in stock.

I'm only new to this as well, but my advice to you would be - as long as the crankcase has no damage (big holes !) then go ahead and order those two parts from fowlers.
