View Full Version : Non starting SV.
Hello ya'll, been a while since Ive posted!
Ive recently rebuilt the mighty SV from storage over the winter (and a street tracker experiment) and the engine doesnt turn.
Ive put back all the electrics together OK (that I thinks OK anyway) and completely recharged the battery and changed the oil & filters.
starting the bike, ingnition on and clutch in provides me with the starter turning once, then a scary repeated clicking noise from the underseat black boxes.
The haynes manual thinks it may be *shudder* seized, Ive read posts along these lines in the past, any thoughts? It was running soundly in November on tick over and hasnt had any abuse since.
Help help help!
Cheers

Sounds like duff battery or starter motor, clicking is the solenoid (I assume this is an inj not a carby)

firstly, does the engine actually turn over by hand ? ( remove the round plug on the rotor side and stick a socket on it, remove the plugs if you can't move it), second try a direct feed from the battery to the starter relay ( the side that connects to the startermotor itself, it won't start it but should turn it over).
this will tell you the engine is mechanically free, and the starter motor is working, from that you can deduce the problem is either the relay(not uncommon to rust threw one of the terminals, wiring to the relay (heavy gauge so can become brittle, easy way to check this is to use a single jumper cable from the battery side of the relay to the battery) or battery.
Oh and make sure you have a good earth...;)
Cheers Mark.

If the battery has been stood all winter without a maintence charger than it is probably sulphated and buggered (very low cranking ability but will turns lights on). Try new one or jump leads from car.
sounds like a duff battery as everyone else has said. had mine go after i left my heated grips on when i parked up and didnt get any lights or anything, jumped it off a car, went petrol station and tried to start again, got the lights but just clicked when i tried to start it.
I would say change your battery. Also have you checked your fuses?

The fact you say it turned over once then click click click tells me batt also. Either as other people have said jump it or take one lead off a terminal on the battery charge it then attach to see if the battery is any good for cranking it over, but there's only one way to test longevity of charge, the hard way. The reason I say take a terminal off to charge is that as someone else said something might not be earthed properly and causing a discharge on the battery so while trying to charge it it will lose it at the same pace.
