It's not about the mixture, it's about excess air and unburned fuel in the exhaust system.
The FI bikes, (Pointy), have a system called PAIR, (Suzuki's own acronym, other makers use different names for similar systems), which allows air from the airbox directly into the exhaust under certain conditions, it's this air which allows unburnt fuel in the exhaust gases to burn, which causes the pops and bangs you referring to. This occurs with a standard exhaust, but because of the silencing is harder to hear. It can also be caused by a leak in the exhaust, the closer to the exhaust port the leak is the more likely it is to cause burning in the exhaust.
Your bike being a Curvy does not have the same air injection system.

My pops on over run, and there's no exhaust leak. Although the fueling is a bit rough.
I remember on my 125 if you ran with the choke a little on you could make about 6 inch flames on the over run. (Not recommended ha-ha)
My scorpion system helps my curvy pop a treat on overrun, even got a cracking backfire when I started it the other morning, bet the neighbours loved that at 6.40am

What's over run?
When you shut the throttle off.
same as when you hear a two stroke with a nice ring dingy noise shut off the throttle and they go dang dang der dang dang :p:p

Mine pops when I throttle off from 30mph in 3rd gear. Sounds great but I'm pretty sure every pedestrian hates me at that point; it's LOUD.

I always understood that the exhaust popping was bad as in ruined the packing inside your can. Causing the can to reach higher temps and ruin carbon/coloured finish

if you buy a decat pipe it will pop like a gun shot!

if you buy a decat pipe it will pop like a gun shot!
And bikers wonder why people alienate them.

I know, aint it tragic. Its best when they pop going under tunnels..
lol, or past people walking rats on a lead, as it sets them off barking like mad
funny. to me when i hear a bike 'pop' it just sounds like its running like a bag of poo. if it's popping then its wasting petrol as far as i'm concerned.

I'm with Bibio on this. Popping and banging on the overrun makes me think, "Poorly fitted, leaky system". I would rather hear that lovely throaty exhaust sound unimpeded by backfires and pops when I shut the throttle.
