I have just entered the Halstead and Essex Marathon.

Don't ask me why, I haven't run for 6 years and as a smoker (yes I started again after a month and a half).

Any runners got any tips for me?

Oh by the way, I have about 3 and a half weeks till crunch time..

The first half will be fine.

By 18 your legs will feel like Stone. With that amount of time to go I'd just do what you can. Get a few LONG runs in in the next two weeks. Don't try and do too much in the last week (maybe a 10 miler or a half depending on what you're used to).

Plenty of practice gained walking back and forward to the bar:D
Good luck because although you cycle a lot it is not quite the same as running---------10days to recover is the main thing;)

Under that quiet demure exterior you are a bloody self masochist

You'll be fine I'm sure. Just don't underestimate how difficult it is. To be honest I reckon anybody can do a marathon, it's just a question of how long it will take to complete, and how long it will take to recover.

90% of it is in the mind, if you have the will to finish then you will.

cut down on the fags a bit before the run. Enjoy it and remember it'll all be worth it at the finish line.

I've stopped smoking as of today Balky. Part of the reason I'm doing the marathon is my cycling I'm now able to smoke and cycle and yes it impacts my speed but I can do what I do no problem, so setting a new challenge was a way of helping me kick the habit.

Need to just stay focused on that one.

6.25 mile run to work this morning.

1 hour 1 minute, (9 minute 47 second miles).

Feel good except for the bloody blisters!

Only advice I can give is do NOT train too hard.

If you get the odd achy knee or muscle strain, do NOT continue to train on it. Give yourself time to heal. Don't give yourself training challenges like "I must be running x miles in x minutes". You push too hard you could get injured and screw up all the good work and miss the event. Just take your time and enjoy it, train well when you feel good.

That's all. Good luck n that.

Nipples - apparently chafing is a big problem. I wouldn't know, I've hardly been able to walk for months let alone run. But I understand for chaps your shirt can rub so it's worth putting some small plasters over them.

Andy Flower and Angus Fraser are both doing London on Sunday. My office is next to Angus's and his post run heavy breathing is slightly pervy!

Good luck.

Make sure it's a full Marathon!
One at Hull was a bit short & pi$$ed off a few runners.

They say it's 26.2 miles and apparently it's the 5th best in the UK or something..
