I hate halfords. Not for any idealised reason just because my local branch is staffed by couldn't care less kids. The store is kept at -20c, they have really limited range and they are flipping expensive. I think the only thing I've seen as value for money is their camping gear.

Who else in the non-online retail market can you go to nowadays for car stuff?

maviczap
16-04-12, 06:47 PM
Well it hasn't improved my viewpoint about them then, in fact if it is just a marketing thing, then I'm not impressed.:smt071

Types out note to Ann Robinson at Watchdog :smt024

At the least its bad practice, its immoral

There's a double din, DVD playing handsfree ready car stereo reduced from £800ish to £139 at the mo. That is a bargain, bearing in mind few non-DVD ones retail lower than £150

We're lucky, in that we've got the Wilco chain of motorist shops round here.

Cheaper than Halfrauds usually, plus a better range of products.

Its strange as Halfrauds must have got rid of most of their older and more experienced staff, as most of the staff in my branches are under 30 years old.

The former manger of my local Halfrauds, now works at Wilco

Yes they're going under and can't afford to pay more than £6 p/h , no overtime and they had a serious structure last year.
Teenager with a hobby that involves buying all their ripspeed **** and living with your parents are p[rerequisites for a career at the overpriced plasticrap warehouse.

Understand they're crap employers, they stock overpriced tat and I think their best sales are back to basics in cycles.

Am I right in saying they started out years ago as a humble cycle shop?

Not knocking their tools mind! Will also point out 'they're going under' isn't fact, was a bit of a sweeping statement, doubt they will disappear tbh - just having a hardtime.

H'mm don't know about the cycle shop but ours is flogging loads of cycles nowadays.

Overprice tat? Not much of that in our little branch, mostly oils, polish and other bits and bobs you need. Usually got the random tool I need at short notice.

Plus they stock Bosch wiper blades, which are good, plus oil & air filters, brake pads etc for all my vehicles.

My local Halfrauds, used to sell these, but they sell loads of stuff I don't need. Sat Nav's, air fresheners, spark plugs, pink steering wheel covers, :smt019

The big one's we have up here, sheffield, dewsbury, leeds. Sell a lot of tat and it's very expensive for what it is, like tom says they do sell useful stuff too sometimes at an expected premium for convenience , often at a ridiculous premium (I was missing a plastic fascia for a new stereo/handsfree I was fitting and needed to finish that day for work on monday.....£60 more than the internet!)
I reckon if they concentrated on quality and convenience/DIYers they'd get back on track. General outrage I've experienced with them in the past puts them to the back of my mind which is a bit of a shame.

Oops something I thought I rmeembered my grandad telling me re. the cycle shop.

xena_wales - was in the leeds store at the w/e. Will find out if it's available elsewhere.

Thanks, they actually have one in my local store too... Am sorely tempted cos it's got the camera input that I can use to keep an eye when towing the horses...

Sorry to keep on, but do you know what discount was available? Wondering if I can blag the same.

Argos do the same thing. Pis*es me off because you spend ages researching the product and they dont actually have any of them anywhere. Argos' website is worse though because you can only check 2 or 3 stores at a time

I've come across this with Argos before as well. Often have half price power tool sales but they never have any stock of the sale items...

For motor parts you only have to look away from from the retail parks. Most places will have independant motor factors somewhere in a side street - we have loads in High Wycombe and they often have the everyday stuff you need without stocking the ****e Halfords think we want.

Strange, after browsing over the bargains in Halfords, I got an email offering a Sat Nav today.

Coincidence? My ****. Some kind of cookie.

I have bought online from them before, so they know my email address. Maybe I'll add them to my spam filter :smt021

Nope, still the same no stock of the product you've tried to buy.

Same for all the other Sat Nav's in the email offer.

Completed a survey included in the email, told them what i thought, not that will do any good

We have two branches within 6 miles of each other, neighboring towns, and they are building another one in the bigger town a big 'auto centre' in addition. The local bike shops (there are two local family run bike shops) are much better and fantastic for second hand bikes for the boys as they grow, they also both offer after sales servicing by real enthusiasts. Much better than a chain that really doesn't have a care about the customers.
