I am shocked there is not already a thread, really annoys me how it passes every year with hardly any publicity, the Irish have the right idea. We English have as much right to be patriotic as much as anybody else!

St George? You mean that Roman soldier from Syria that is also a big hit with the Islamic world (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_George), and has more "Patronages" than Princess Di?

Oh god, does it matter, my point is it always passes with barely a mention, whereas St Patricks get loads of press!! This country has been occupied by many foreign forces over time but thats here nor there it is St Georges Day, they one day a year we should be able to shout about the fact we're English but we don't.

St Paddy has the entire Brewing Industry behind it - its just a marketing sham/con.
You ask for proof? How many Paddys do you know that need an excuse to drink? So, St Paddys day is definately not aimed at the Irish.

Dave Preston needs an excuse to drink - unless he has a really really good excuse he won't touch a drop.
And as for wearing a white dress. I'm outside much of the day and white dress + wet rainy stuff isn't a good combination!

It would seem only the Welsh (St David) have a native as their saint as he was a Welsh Bishop in the 6th Century

And what's more we celebrate the occasion of the patron saint's day here in Wales without any particular booze manufacturers patronage. The parades down in Cardiff this year were pretty spectacular.

Isn't St Patrick 'credited' with banishing all the snakes from Ireland? I never understand why one should be celebrated for wiping out several species, but he was fibbing anyway as Ireland never actually had any snakes in the first place so it's all a scam.
And as for killing dragons Georgie boy, well nowhere does it say how big the dragon was. It could have been a small fluffy baby dragon with tiny teeth no bigger than a kitten. Most images show a maiden watching this 'brave act' happen. But I can tell you, she isn't impressed by all that nonsense. She'd far rather he'd done something useful like the ironing or washed the kitchen floor.
let's do something traditionally English.
what tie bells to your feet and click sticks together while waving hankies at each other  :D

St George allegedly slew the Dragon, but was himself beheaded in 303 ( AD )
. . . on Fact of the Day
Is that not why they have launched all of the Shakespeare celebrations today?

There was a huge bikes and car rally on Sunday, we went out for food in monkspath and hundreds of bikes and cars went past with st georges flags covering them, I think they had come from stratford.
2 idiots in a Subaru and a m3 Beemer decided to start racing each other at the end of it when they were all leaving, we were in the middle of it.
I'm never drinking again.
On a school night ,what were we thinking ...
