View Full Version : On Street Parking (Office Hours) - Security Tips?

We're going to be moving offices soon to a city centre location (Nottingham). This means that I'll be parking my bike on the street in designated bays etc.
What's the best security I can apply to keep it from getting pinched? I've got a big chain & lock (with additional cable) but would anything else help? I reckon that if anyone wants to nick it they probably will, and I can't be bothered lumping 25kgs of additional security each morning.......:smt066

If you can chain it to something then do so.
Failing that, any chain is just going to be a disc-lock in effect, so you might as well just get a disc-lock alarmed is an option, which you can carry under the seat with more ease.
Its what I do in Central London - nowhere to chain to, so the chain stays at home.

Almax chain, chain to something, even another bike, or a colleagues car tow bar etc.
After a friends gsxr got physically lifted into a van from liverpool station on a weekday morning. He leaves his hefty chain around a lampost / railings and locks up when he arrives in the morning.

Where about in nottingham city centre? I know there are bays just of made marrien way ( castle side) with places to loop a chain round.
If there's nothing fixed to chain my bike to I'll put my chain round someone elses chain. Then we're both protected until the other person goes home. If there's absolutely nothing about to chain to I put the chain on the rear as I assume it's easier to wheel a bike into a van by lifting the front than the back.
At the end of the day it's impossible to make your bike scrote proof but all you need to do is make it more awkward to nick yours than another one in the row. Or failing that get a nasty scooter than nobody wants to nick anyway.
I keep hearing that SV's are not that desirable to nick!. But jesting aside you should do the best you can. The hassle of having it taken isn't worth it.

....or a colleagues car tow bar etc.
Until said colleague forgets about it and drives off towing your bike along on its side.

I used to have to commute to Nottingham, on Convent Street (behind Oceana) is motorbike parking, with a metal rail to chain to.. It's pretty close to the centre so if no-where else has something to chain to then it might be the best option....

Rabid dog!
As SK says if there is nowhere to anchor to, I'd use a alarmed disc lock

Yeah I was looking at that one - it is about a five minute walk from our new office so I'll have a look - cheers

Cheers for that - I think the one nearer to Maid Marian Way is the closer one for my new office (Hound Gate I think it's called?!).
Thanks anyway - good to know I've got a choice!!!!!

Either that or if you take the 1st right ( going up the hill ) follow it round to the back of the britannia hotel, theres one or two there with a solid metal fence to loop a big chain round.
I and a few others have parked our cars there for a week or two without any troubles.

there has been occasions when people do that they arrive one day to find that their lock has had glue or something else poured into the lock making it unuseable. the owner then has no option but to leave the bike unchained all day and the perosn who tampered with the lock knows then that the bike is not secire.

i been thinking about this and if someone wants your bike, they will take it. I find using a less desirable bike makes them think twice about nicking it. but i agree with disco locks with alarms, and chain around a post.
and maybe a teddy bear with a gun sitting on the back

My old bike came with added security - not sure how effective it was though.....
