View Full Version : Speedo stopped - how to remove rotor?

Hi,

Was out on my K3 and the speedo started to report my speed as '0', it flashed at '38' once. I've read that it could be the Speedo rotar wheel could be to blame?

Anyone got a description of how to get at it to check? or any other causes?

I think the part number is '34983-21E00' if I need a new one.

remove the front wheel. The magnet is located on the left hand side. Check the magnet is in one piece and give it a good clean up if it is and a smear of grease.

Righto, I'll get my self to the shop tomorrow and get some tools and grease. Is it easy enough to remove, if i just follow my nose?

Damn, the procedure is in the manual, seems I need a special tool from Suzuki. Need to get a jack too. Going to be expensive.

what special tool? The axle is a 12mm allan key (iirc) that's only about the non standard tool.

Manual says a special tool, it looks like an allan. I'll order one from ebay or Amazon.

Mine has done this recently, the magnet had broken off the locator teeth in and the glue I had used to fix it had failed.

It is a simple job to fix though.

Loosen the bolt on the Right Hand fork leg, that clamps the axle. Loosen the axel and remove the brake calipers. Jack up the front end so that the front wheel is just off the ground and remove wheel spindle. Slide the wheel out fro munder the mudguard and fish out bits of broken magnet, which you can then glue back together. Replace the front wheel carefully (otherwise you will have to fix the magnet again), fit axle carefully and hand tighten before you lower the front end back down and tighten the axle fully and the locking bolt. Refit calipers and go for a test ride. No special tools required, when I do this I have a 10mm spanner, a 12mm Hex key and a ratchet with a 14mm socket for the brake studs. To be honest this is all stuff that you will have in a good small tool kit.

A torque wrench is a good idea if you are buying tools, just to make sure that you do not over tighten any of the bolts when you refit it all. Time to do this is about twenty mins, the slowest part is waiting for the glue to dry, I used epoxy resin last time and that lasted for ages. Super glue is utterly useless for repairing the magnet though!

Not so simple :D Broken my cheap socket set ratchet. Also with the backend on a paddock stand and using a hydraulic jack on the sump the bike didn't seem stable at all, any tips?

I'll have to go buy/borrow some more tools tomorrow and have another stab at it. I bought the hex socket and borrowed a torque wrench, but the socket doesn't fit, so I need to get hold of an adaptor.

I also noticed if I give the front wheel a shove while it is jacked in the air it stops rotating almost immediately, is this normal behaviour or should it rotate more freely?

Put your bike on the side stand, loosen all the necessary bolts at the front, remove the calipers and tie them out oif the way, then put your jack under the engine with a piece of wood or perhaps some rag between engine and jack plate, depending on where you place the jack the rear wheel may lift, if it does reposition the jack carefully. Sometimes a bit of weight on the pillion seat helps. Don't put the jack under the oil filter.
Remove wheel, recover smashed bits of speedo rotor, put in bin. Fit new rotor, VERY carefully put the speedo drive back on the wheel making sure the rotor's lugs fit in the recesses on the wheel so you don't break your shiny new rotor*.
Put the wheel back on but don't tighten anything until you've lowered it and it's standing on it's wheels.

Your brakes may be dragging a bit, spin the wheel with the calipers removed, does the wheel now spin freely? If yes, then the calipers may need a clean and general degrotting.

* Yes, I know - you wouldn't be that daft right? Well I'm sure you're not, but, if you were, you wouldn't be the first.

Speedo fixed. A piston was seized on one of the callipers, took me ages to get the bloody retaining pin out.(eventually used the trick I read somewhere on here to drill through the other side of the calliper and knock it out.)
Went to loosen the bleed nipple and it snapped off. Great. Now I need to get the old remains out and get a new nipple. :D Hopefully get it back on the road this weekend, got to go back to work on Tuesday.

Failed, back on the 125 after a week of ownership :D Calliper going in to a shop on Tuesday to see if they can remove the nipple, if not I'll beed to get hold of another. Only had 2 or 3 short rides, so still looking forward to the first dry one.
