View Full Version : since when did £650 excess become the norm?

Just shopping for bike insurance (online at the mo) all the sites have a compulsory excess of :£650. It may be a 'young persons' excess, but anyone else noticed it?Is this how they're trying to disguise/hinder raising premiums?
Most annoyingly I thought "fair enough I won't be claiming then" and put the total excess up to £1650... no change in premium!
The premiums are actually pretty cheap so not really grumbling ... but the choice would be nice

How old are you now Dave? You have to be 25 by now!

Not yet :(
Not really grumbling as combined with the premium it suits me and the sv, would just be a pain on the car or another bike though

Mine was £650 and now it's £500. On every policy I've had there has been the option of "excess insurance" which I've always taken.

Basically you pay £X for the policy and then it covers the first £Y of your excess should you claim.

I'm 24, got my insurance via Comparethemarket from a company called Grove and Dean, was £250 for insurance on the SV with £350 excess, I have 5 years no claims tho and my bike is garaged, dunno if that has made a difference as it says if my bike is stolen from my home while not garaged my excess is £650.

Since when? This year I guess.
Never been contracted to pay more than £250, I'm sure.

My excess is £125, for two bikes.

Just to annoy you all ;)

Well I wouldn't claim regardless (I don't think) but it's putting me off considering getting another bike until next year.
Without mods prices are coming up like £150 (with £650 excess) for the SV but just a case of ringing round and seeing if they'll accept mods now (which judging by last years experience, they won't)

If you have mods, ring motorcycle direct! Guy seems to have found a crafty way round it...unless he's just wanting me to buy with them so he gets his commission and I'm screwed in a claim

i've never had an excess more than £250, whether it is a fully comp policy or 3rd party f & t. I wouldn't go with any insurer saying i would need to pay anything higher than that.

My excess on my recent quotes has been £650 even though I am old (36)

The fact the bikes I have been looking at are 13k + doesnt help

Most seem to be making it the norm, as a lower excess doubles the price

Nah I'm fine to crash - it's third party, fire and theft :smt033

Comprehensive is double (but reasonable), third party ONLY is £20 cheaper than fully comp. Although this is the norm now, remember being astonished a few years ago.

What pee'd me off is when I rang up they went through all the details I'd put in online and the price came out £200 more than online. When we messed around and cross referenced the two sets of info it turned out that on the web I hadn't filled in a field marked optional - the value of a non-fault claim settlement. When he asked me over the phone he caught me off guard and I gave an approximation, this is what raised the quote and the guy wouldn't withdraw it because he knew then. Said I'd have to buy online, cloak and dagger bull**** is insurance!

I've never had it cheaper online than over the phone, changes on a year on year basis.

But a higher excess £1650 knocks £2, they've found the sweet spot to stop claims I do believe.

No it don't you just need to get insurers to work for you, and play them all against each other in most cases. Or as I said to mine, I'm not paying stupid money when they ain't hardly going neat a road! I got 100 quid off mine this year, as well as the low excess.

I've finally got to the point where quotes are coming in near enough the same and minor haggling is all that needs to be done. It may even actually be worth considering whether an insurer is any good this year! The price differences one to the next seem to be varying in their 10s not 100s.

I'm not sure spending a weekend and a few nights of solid ringing is worth my time this year as I'll knock £50-£100 off. Previous years it'd be £1000 one company, £580 the next two, £3k from swinton and £400 the next call.

I managed to get mine via devil insurance at £430 fully comp and no excess. Insured the bike the day after my test and I live in Northern Ireland so excellent deal I think.
