yesterday I booked my MOT for CBR600rr, with after market exhaust. The exhaust had its baffles in, the exhaust also marked (road legal). yet i was refused for my MOT because they deemed it too loud.
its only a slip on exhaust so the down pipes are original and havent had any of the honey comb mesh taken out, and the ends are baffled.
so after this I was worried about not getting MOT with out putting old exhaust back on which is a hassle. I then decided to go to another MOT place who checked exhaust and said he would MOT it. he said "its got baffles, its stamped, its loud but there are much louder" so booked MOT for 5pm today.
after taking time off to be refused an MOT and have my time wasted and the fuel to get to MOT place and back. not happy so don't use a place called
MAC MOTORS located in

With the engine running assess the effectiveness of the silencer(s) in reducing as far as is reasonable the noise emitted. 3. Check the silencer(s) on all machines for any unacceptable markings. 2. A silencer that is in such a condition or is of such a type that the noise emitted is clearly in excess of that which would be produced by a similar machine fitted with a standard silencer in average condition.

My friend got his passed recently with an unbaffled racefit but they did say it was very illegal but passed it anyway.
Sorry mate but i had my 600rr checked by them with a two brothers exhaust and he passed it when the police gave me a rectifier. No exhaust markings not even an e mark and is bloody loud.
Also he saved you money by not doing the test then failing you. He can seem a bit cocky but he does my bikes and scooter and never had problem.
On that point i think sgt refused to do my rectifier. So two rncounters and we both have opposite experiences
Had mine done yesterday with a non baffled, cut down (shortened) Akro exhaust and also a small number plate.
When I picked it up, the guy simply said, 'when the bike came in it had a baffled exhaust and a standard plate' then winked. TOP GUY!

i have noticed there are MOT testers who like bikes and have a genuine passion for bikes and do things like that. wish i could find one, yet there are others who aren't happy and like to swing their weight.
i just don't like having my time wasted by someone being picky, as i am sure no one else does.

My tester views a loud can as an essential safety feature. He is very hot on things he thinks unsafe. But a loud can isn't going to kill you.
Instead of some daft rule stating ambiguous terms like "as far as is reasonable" they should provide guidance that can be measured, just as with ACU regs at a track. Its then simple, its either too loud or not.
The problem here is the lack of clarity.
Testers discretion I'd be sad.to see go.
Don't go back again.. well only once to show the pass.
Simple his loss

The MOT states:
"Reason for Rejection
A silencer that is in such a condition or is of such a type that the noise emitted is clearly in excess of that which would be produced by a similar machine fitted with a standard silencer in average condition."

I don't know if it's a legal thing or just common, but on both the SV and GSX-R the dB output of the bike at a set number of revs is on the frame. So you could get a rough idea of what it should be around (but obviously given the bikes age and condition then the possible increase in dB over time is subjective).

Db rating is irellevant, noise is at the DISCRETION of the examiner, so if you get a jobsworth....tough **** !
The original idea behind mot's was to keep unsafe stuff in check.
So a reasonably noisy 'zorst has no detrimental effect on that count .
.
More important things to check .
You do get the odd MOT station that are a bit OTT with checks. one of my Dad's cars failed once, they said it was due to an indicator not being orange enough.
Then at the other end of the scale, he had a old street fighter, which had a GSX1100 engine. The exhaust was the down pipes,,and that was it. It made your ears bleed lol.
Well, he took it to get it MOT'd,, The owner of the shop tested it, when he revved it, the tools rattled on the walls.
He turned round and said "That sounds ok nipper" and shut it down. My Dad couldn't believe what he said, and turned to the other mechanic, who when removing his fingers from his ears said " He's partially deaf"

:winner: " He's partially deaf" I had to laugh at that one!
as previous poster mentioned at least he saved you the mot fee. Had a local dealer test it knowing full well when I pulled up and charged me for the privilege. Have found a hard of hearing garage who are very capable, local family run and have comfy chairs.

And there name says what they do on the Tin lol
On the flip side, if your MOT centre is found passing vehicles that are not compliant with the law, they can loose their MOT licence. That's a whole lot of lost revenue, and yes, the vehicle standards agency DO send "mystery shoppers" with illegal bikes around the centres to try and catch them out.

I've used the same place for my bike MOTs for about 14 years now (except one year) so they know me and are generally a bit more lenient with me on stuff like loud exhaust and number plate etc. although they still won't pass the raptor with its Art race cans on lol!
A couple of years ago when I was there getting an mot done vosa turned up unexpectedly.
Yes they do that and will re test . Just to make sure you did it right .

I even gave him a hand with a couple of mots while I was there as his usual mechanic was off that day, just held the bike upright while he checked headlight aim

Why not just accept that the reason we have rules around the noise made by road bikes is for the benefit of everybody, rather than trying to think up imaginative ways around them or picking on someone who is actually doing their job properly? There are several ways of making what appear to be legally marked and baffled cans louder which is why there is that clause in the rules.
I know the boring old fart approach is what you would expect from me but last weekend a group of friends and I had just finished riding a particularly nice stretch of road through the Elan valley in Wales when we had to stop and wait for a mate to catch up. Whilst there we heard the sound of an IL4 bike coming up the road (not my mate) and the noise from it's obvious race can could be heard from quite literally miles away, echoing around the valley. After he had ridden past us (blue R6 if it was anybody on here!) it was a good two or three minutes before we eventually had peace and quiet again. By contrast my mate arrived a couple of minutes later and was within 200 yards before we heard him, and he was on a standard Tiger.
I don't mind making lots of noise at a race track, but the roads are there for everybody to enjoy and very few people appreciate the sound of your bike as much as you do. I'll get back in my box now.
Boring old fart ;)
We had a kid with a Corsa and a pedal bin For an exhust .
Loved that at 7 AM every morning.
soon had the nextdoor naigbours on his case.
Allways worth keeping your original end can just for the MOT
MOT = Moment of Time. Once you got it, it dont mean Jack tbh
