View Full Version : Skydiving
Does anyone do it? done it? I just quite fancy trying it. Not to take up as a hobby or anything, I'd just like to experience what falling out the sky is like.
I'm mostly wondering if doing it in tandem is less of an experience

Why anyone would deliberately jump out of a perfectly servicable aircraft is beyond me...

It is an amazing experiance.
Tandem didn't make it any less of a thrill. I remember doing a sumersault out of the plane then not much else until the chute was pulled.
Loved it, but not sure how much more I'd want to do it having experianced it once.

If I remember corretly MEJ took it up a while back, he sold off just about everything he owns in order to pay for it... Havnt seen him on here in a while though.

I'd say that's got to be a bucket list candidate. I'd love to do it, but would also probably find a lot of excuses not to, such as the mess it'll leave in my pants.

Yeah its on mine, but its in a sub catagory for "things to do before I die if I know that my death is imminent adn my life insurance covers the risk"
I wanna do it but have no desire to do it unless I know Im duying anyway, its on there with Bungee jumping and sleeping with a fat chick.

I used to do it in the 70s at Flookburgh. 6 static lines, 4 dummy pulls and then on my own. First jump from 2,500 ft out of an Islander
Great fun and I only wish after 18 jumps I could still do it. But unfortunately a slit trench on the airfield decided to bite me.

Love to skydive but will leave the last two for you.
Could always do it as a Pennine Massive get together.

I get ya buddy. I wonder what the statistics are for the actual death rate though? Maybe 1 in 10,000 or something. I would guess higher actually. It seems like a potentially lethal past time when you think about it. I mean at any moment she could just roll onto you and crush you to death with her mounds of sweaty blubber.

That's a truly awesome excuse, my friend! :D I shall remember that for the next time I climb off the bed and the mrs looks at me with disgust.
"Finish yourself off. I'm too young to die."
More dangerous to ride a bike. Tandem doesn't have to be the only way to experience it, friend of mine done a jump for charity. You do a full morning training of how to control the parachute when open and how to land then jump out with two instructors keeping you stable in the air in the afternoon, you do lots of dummy pulls then when the time is right the real one.
Think it was called introduction to AFF or introduction to RAPS
This is my video...

I did it with the North London Parachute Club based in... Cambridgeshire, just North West of Ely if I remember rightly. It was first come first served and due to bad weather I had to show up three times before I got my jump.
Strapped to an instructor or not, falling out of a plane is still an experience.
I'm glad to have done it, not sure I'd do it again though. Felt quite nauseous by the time we landed.
I saw the AFF thing, it's almost twice the price of just going tandem though which is why I was wondering if tandem distracts from the experience.

Is that just from the height thing or like travel sickness? I always feel quite unwell after rollercoasters

My 2nd favourite form of diving ;)
Actually, the missus bought me it for our wedding anniversary when silk was the recommended gift. She gave me an envelope with what I thought would contain a silk tie, instead it was a gift voucher for a sky dive!
She's so nice :)

I think I was a bit nervous when the instructors previous punter had thrown up in his face.
My stomach went a bit when he pulled the chute. However it was when he passed the ropes to me and let me control that my stomach really went. He told me to release one and pull the other, which causes you to bank quite violently! I passed the controls back and concentrated on the horizon for a bit! hehe
