From what I've heard, it's basically a giant beer & sausage festival in Munich with traditional Bavarian umpah bands & parades etc. been to Germany about 6-7 times over the years and the krauts have never been anything but friendly, accommodating & outright lovely.
Always wanted to go, never had the opportunity, so here I am posting on't org again for companions (that's you speedplay). Don't think it would be much fun on bikes at end of sept/start of oct, so I'd happily drive it in monty the mondeo (with room for all luggage). Upto 3 other passengers more than welcome to join me, if we get a few cars going then we'll make a bit of a road trip out of it. Could also possibly tie in with other stuff like a visit to the BMW factory / Vw factory at inglostadt & Wolfsburg (sounds geeky, go google it, you will be blown away) / and some war memorial stuff.
If there's a few of us going in the one car then the costs for ferries/diesel suddenly become very cheap. register interest here :D

I'll take another three in my limo. Ok, it's a Skoda Superb, but under the anti-theft devices, ie, the badge, it's an Audi A6.
The Oktoberfest is a dream trip of mine. My Grandpa did it, Dad did it, now it's my turn.
If you're not sure, just Google images, Oktoberfest Girls.

Skoda = vag, absolutely rocking cars pete  autobahn speed testing anyone?
So you're pretty much a definite. Just need 6 unsuspecting accomplices..
Sounds like the festival runs for 2 weeks so will need to confirm/vote for dates. Anymore for any more?
i'll have to see/check on funds and plans for that time of year. Maybe going to the German &/or Italina bike show this year!

Done various trips in the past but snowbombing in Austria (mayrhofen 2007) was:
Saturday: leave west Yorkshire at 6am down to Dover for 12 noon ferry on the boat, 2pm on the continent, drove all the way to trier in Germany and stop @ hotel for the night (arrived 10pm). 600 ish miles
Sunday: wake up & drive to mayrhofen 9am til 5pm 450 ish miles
So I guess allow 2 days for getting there with a stop off somewhere on day 1, then 2-3 days at Oktoberfest, then depending on what ppl wanna do we could have a day at Vw/Audi, day at aushcwitz or a night in cologne with sight seeing on the daytime (stunning city).. Once we're back in the north of the country you can easily get back to Calais in 5-6 hours. Watch out for the Belgian drivers though, last country in the eu to have a mandatory driving test: nearly stopped to have a scrap with a Belgian who tried to cosmetically alter the front of my car near liege.
Depends what people wanna do :)

Judging from the plan I don't think uni would fit in...... It may be best to count on just drew going in the car
I've been 4 times and I'm going again this year. It's all kinds of awesome.
I'm going by plane. There's no way I'd be fit to drive back. I'll be barely fit to catch a plane - the last time we ended up in France. :)
If you're going you'll need to get your digs booked sharpish.

06-05-12, 10:51 PM
well we actually stayed in austria in a place with a view that put you on your a5re and the lake at your door surounded by mountains
i wouldnt stay in the centre ,the prices obviously sky rocket and the train/tube system there is fecking amazing so id aim for somewhere just outside town 15-20mins by train, ive mates in munich so could get some recomendations if you want,
and if that english rugby supporting southern fairy is going with you just tell me how much cash and make me some space in the car
davepreston
06-05-12, 10:59 PM
also bear in mind a stiener is 9-10 euro inside
so your looking at 100-200 euro a day inc your food ,smokes, funfair (yes its a must)
and id aim for either the first day to see the opening cerimoney or the last few days for the closing one
fine frolines dressed to impress and the drinking tradtion with 1200 people cheering you on while you stand on a table necking a stiener (dont fail at this the sigh is enough to kill you with shame), not that me or phil had an issue with that :)

Is that davepreston estimated drinking volumes or average Joe Bloggs? :D
In all honesty, just been loooking at costings etc whilst at work (yes working on a BH Monday sucks). I reckon this could work out a little too much for me this year knowing what else I have going out approaching Sept / Oct etc.....
Getting there is cheap ish. Ferries are approx £70 return with P&O. So if 4 in a car £17.50 each. Fuel. Well its 611 miles from Calais to Munich. So if you call that £200 all in? (Sound about right?) so roughly £50 per person. So in total approx £70 per person to get there and back.
So that just leaves the hotels etc and spending money. Taking Pauls travel details etc say 2 nights hotel stays whilst travelling. Plus then 3 nights there. So would need to budget 5ish nights accom. (Can't cost this part up as don't know what kind of thing people want to stay in etc.)
Then take Dave's higher estimate of 200 Euros per day......would be looking at about £700 spending money once converted. So to budget......depending on the hotel etc, reckon could be looking at somewhere between £850 to a £1000 all in. Obviously could take less spending money....but I know what I am like when I drink!!! lol.
Anyone who has been......am I budgeting too much? Or too little? Just so I can make a choice. Otherwise may leave it for another year for me. Really want to go as would be a blast but already have a load of outgoings for the end of the year to consider.
I got all excited about this, then read your estimates Drew... :(
Probably not going to have anywhere near enough spare cash for this really so i'm going to be sensible and say, Bannatine styley, i'm out.
P.S. I was well looking forward to getting my Fräulein outfit out again for the boys. ;)

Yo dudes, reading on Wikipedia the beer at Oktoberfest has to be a minimum 6% abv and has lots more sugar than usual, so it's rocket fuel. I'd imagine 5-6 pints would be enough to blow your head off in one evening? Exact figures for beer prices are here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oktoberfest#Price_of_beer and it looks like the average price per pint is €8-9 (£6-7).
When we stopped off in trier on the way to snowbombing it was an NH hotel, walked in off the street and asked for 2 x double rooms for the four of us. It was €79 per night so worked out €40 each inc breakfast (£32 going on current xe.com exchange rates).
Accommodation nearer the place; I'll have a word with Preston and see if he can pull some recommendations, but would you guys be happy with a hostel maybe? Über cheap & there must be plenty to choose from with Munich being a major city. Edit: quick google for hostels Munich Oktoberfest http://www.hostelbookers.com/hostels/germany/munich/ - £14-20 isn't too bad for a bed for the night, I'm not bothered about en suite wifi sky news in my room so a bed & ear plugs will do me just fine.
Drew Carey
07-05-12, 10:46 AM
I will sleep anywhere that has a bed....not fussed about sharing or creature comforts.....would be there solely to drink with mates and enjoy some good times and soak up the atmosphere.
Going on the prices you have given, so that would be say around £150 ish for accom. The £70 ish I mentioned for travel......so getting there and sleeping roughly £220. (Unless can find a hostel for sleep on way there and way back, which would cut this to probably £190ish)
So, beer money.....although you say 6 steins etc......over a longer period of time (ie all day long), I reckon you would end up drinking about 8-10 per day? (least I know I would) So £50-£70 per day on booze. Leaving £30 per day for a bit of sausage and some fair ground rides.....so approx £100 per day spends should be reasonable I think as would cover off any extras too. Over 3 drinking days....plus a bit extra.....£400
So that makes it roughly I reckon about £620ish for the full trip. My brain be a thinking again! lol. ;-)
Edit - amended as realised wouldn't be drinking for 5 days!!! More likely 3.

Oh and a lot of the beers come in 1000ml glasses :)
So the fuel is basically a fixed cost (as long as we don't go too crazy on the autobahns) as is the ferry, if we can get the accommodation as cheap as possible on the way down (in France there's forumle1's which are double rooms with a sink and then communal toilets/shower cubicles on each floor). Think they're about €22 per night, might be worth seeing if there's anything similar in Germany.
So the main variable cost is spending money while we're there with around £200-£240 for travel & accommodation. I guess it's down to each prospective person attending, to work out their own budget & decide whether it's viable..

whats this staying over on route malarky
2 or more drivers, 150 miles per stint (then break for fuel and rest) so thats 4 drivers or 2 drivers taking 2 stints, and its not hard at all in a car we did it shed loads of times while i was over there
and thats not even taking into account using the rotterdam boat there and back which leaves harrwich or hull
hull -rotterdam ferry 500 miles drive to munich thats a 7-9 hr drive
davepreston
07-05-12, 05:08 PM
and the prices thing
right it was 9e 10c per steiner last year , take into account your there all day even at 1 steiner per hour for 12 hrs thats 109e 20c
food again all day 3 medium snacks 30e
hostel 24e
so ladies and gents thats 163e per night while your there = £131.50
so add a bit of buckshee unknown money lossage say £150
so its £70 transport and £150 per night times how many nights
so 4 nights plus trans = £670
transport 70
beer 600
ocktober fest priceless
Paul the 6th
07-05-12, 05:49 PM
righto, £70 transport and £150/night all in.. That a bit more reasonable drew/binky?
Drew Carey
07-05-12, 05:59 PM
and if that english rugby supporting southern fairy is going with you just tell me how much cash and make me some space in the car
Only just noticed this....was this me you were referring to? :D
Have looked just now on the Hull - Rott and cost jumps from 70 to 264.......I dont think think this is worth it. I would be more than happy to be added to someones insurance and help drive a stint......to be honest, the camaraderie and a lot of caffiene would keep us all going.
My only thing is the cost, I know that shouldnt be a factor, but got a lot going on end of the year.....so how about this.......we get early fairy from Dover, then hit the lot in one go? Possible? Arrive late on Day 1. Then drink for Day 2, Day 3......day 4 do something nostalgic and non drink related (so we are sensible driving back!).......then crack of dawn day 5 travel back. That way, keeps beer costs to two days and accom to 4 nights.
£70 travel, £20 per night. So £80 total. Food and bits £30 per day so £150. Then for two drinking nights say £200 (roughly 240 euros).
That works out at a nice round £500.......would people be up for only 2 days drinking or is that not enough? Lol! :D
Paul the 6th
07-05-12, 06:05 PM
More than possible drew, coming back from Mayrhofen in austria we decided just to go for it and do the lot in one go - only me driving!
1024 miles in 16 hours, left mayrhofen at 12noon on the sunday, got to calais about 11pm, sailed at midnight, back in the UK for 12:20am and home to west yorkshire by 4.30am.
Was hard work towards the end but lots of red bull and pro-plus did the job. If we're doing the early boat from dover then we can easily get to Munich by evening time.
And 2 days drinking in the middle suits me just fine. £500 (plus I'll bring a bit more) for the works sounds grand.. I've no qualms with getting people insured on my car.
Just need to rope in someone south enough to make getting the early ferry an easy job (maybe somewhere around northampton or essex way? :D)

Right just going to add some info here, which hasn't been considered, and might help if you can't afford to go for a long trip
You can fly with German Wings from Manchester, Stanstead & Heathrow, direct to Colonge, not some mickey mouse Ryan Air place.
A kurtz S Bahn zug reise nach Koln Centrum :D
Current midweek fare in September is 24€ one way. More expensive at the weekends, so go midweek
Not only will this cut down on your travel time, but means you could do a shorter trip.
Flights from Stanstead are twice a day, early and late.
I'm off there this month for a weekend away

Guys, if people are interested, I have a 6 birth tent......found this site here, which is 8EUR per person per night and then 31 EUR per medium tent per night on top. So if 6 people, works out at 13.16eur per person per night......
Not bad in my view, if taking big cars can easily sort gear etc.

Try to avoid middle weekend if you can. That's when all the Italians come up.
Hofbrau tent is very entertaining.
Get there early, it's getting harder to get a seat in the evenings unless you have a ticket, you've already missed the window to get tickets though.

Have informed Paulino...but.....
:(
So close...yet so far.....
I am having to bow out of this at such an early stage and am gutted as is Lily.....think she wanted rid of me for a week!!!!
As some know, Lily is starting a uni course in Sept - which is funded by the company. Lily has been informed this morning that the company have decided that although they are still funding her course - we have to pay for each semester and then get it rebated once each semester is completed. As a result, we need to pay a massive chunk of uni fees in September......so that puts the end to my involvement on Oktoberfest.
Hope you all have a blast and with a bit of forward planning can hopefully make next time around.

Well with the comments people are making about accommodation/ticket availability it sounds like the rest of us might struggle too drew.
And don't worry as said we'll do Junefest at my house of you guys wanna come up. I'll put a big marquee up, lots of different German beers, selection of sausages & schnitzel... I'll even download some umpah music - or you could just ask your bosses drew

I'll bring back some proper Bratwurst & Bockwurst when I go at this month and stick it in the post for your JuneFest, but Lidl & Aldi sausage is pretty good, but not as good as the pukka German stuff

Oh and for drew & lily I'm gonna organise Junefest: big marquee in my back garden, few crates of German beers, some German sausage/meats & some umpah choons. Will set a date soon :)

There's always an alternative to Oktober:
This has to be one of the best Engineering Designs of the modern era ..T.

Well done, Tam
From the figures " fewer visitors this year (6.4 million ) consumed 6.9 million litres "
That's less than 2 pints each! Looks as if you kept that average up by yourself.

Tam, that doesn't look like Oktoberfest looks more like hofbrau house in Munich city centre.
Correct. It was during Oktoberfest though. :)
We always seem to spend more time in the Hofbrauhaus than at the festival site.
