Energy drinks seem to gain a following likened to that of your favourite sports team/rider/manufacturer etc

There are quite a few to choose from; Monster, Relentless, Pussy, UK Mountain Dew, Red Bull and the like.

I love my Monster Energy, nice on it's own, loads a variety and great with Jägermeister.

I have not tried Relentless, but, my dad likes them, I don't like the smell.

My hate would be Redbull, hate the taste...

So, what I was wondering was what "camp" Org members base themselves in? Which ones have you tried? And which ones will you avoid like the plague?

I don't need them to get me through the day, that is what coffee is for, ha ha

That is your issue, not mine, lol

Good old "Green" Monster for me .... goes nicely with Port . Tried Relentless and thought it was lacking , One of the Rockstar ones was nice but the Yellow one was like flat lemonade .... nasty . the one I always come back to is the Green Monster though

They are all really bad for you. Full of sugar, artficial nonsense and acid to rot your teeth. Water is my choice.

Didn't that amazing wealth of knowledge paper "the sun" put some fat bloke on it for a week and it completely messed up his heart pattern fairly dangerously?, I seem to remember reading it... I mean looking at the pictures

Caffeine will mess with your heart rhythm, no matter what way you ingest it.
Just because you drank just energy drinks means nothing, living just on coffee would do the same thing

Not all of them are full of sugar, they either have sugar or sweeteners in them. The sweeteners do provide a source of phenolphthalein, but, as with everything; in moderation!

Ive been using red bull these days, funny thing is everytime Ive used it recently Ive knocked quite a bit of time off my running pace, its probably coincidental tbh but there you go, depends what you want it for I guess.

I find when exercising the best thing is squash and water as it keeps me hydrated. I tried using energy drinks when training, but, I ended up being so thirsty all the time

It has been shown that people who drink low calorie drinks and energy drinks, even the low sugar ones, end up with waists bigger than those who don't. Didn't read the whole report but it was something to do with the artificial sweeteners increasing appetite and stopping you feeling full so quick so you end up eating more.

I know that despite being sponsored by Red Bull, and having the cool boxes dotted around the perimeter at matches the cricketers don't really drink it. Instead they have water in the branded bottles and if it's very hot they add rehydration salts.

I tend to drink atleast one can of green monster a day

They don't interest me. I drink one or two coffees a day, same with tea, and tap water.

I may occasionally drink a can of coke in the summer.

We don't even have fizzy pop in the house either

What bugs me is seeing young kids of ten wandering down the street with a can of relentless or something in hand......unknowingly rotting their teeth, and their parents wondering why they won't go to bed at night or get up in the morning!!

............come on, can you imagine an already hyper blonde on an energy drink mission??

I drink approx 8 mugs of coffee a day at work. I like the energy drinks because they can help if you are doing something intense like exercise but don't drink them lots because I don't do much exercise :)

Nowthen lucozade shots were amazing !! I was buzzing my tits off on those things! Can't see em for sale much these days

Yep, youre absolutley right, quite like powerade but its not an energy drink per se.

I don't like most energy drinks, I rarely have them but I did pick up some Amp sodas from the american soda store. I really quite liked them. Less of the strong taurine taste that most of them have.
My all time favourite one was Irn Bru 32 but they stopped making it after a short trial :(

I don't like coffee as such but I've taken to Costa for a Latte or Costa Light (which as near as I can tell is caffeinated milk foam ;)) but only 1-2 month.

I don't use energy drinks/caffeine habitually as I find I build up a resistance to it, best thing to do is detox, get back on normal stuff and then when you really DO need a boost, drink one and you can definitely feel the effects.

just my opinion anyhow.

Agreed 95%... I don't like water on its own.

Energy drinks are evil substances. Someone who worked for me was a regular drinker of Monster - 5 or 6 large cans a day - and it would change him dramatically over the course of his working day. He found it hard to focus on a job, he forgot things, he got argumentative and aggressive when confronted about his failings in his work and in the end his erratic and sometimes scary behaviour cost him his job. Before he started drinking that Monster crap he was a reasonable enough bloke who could do a decent job, but I noticed a serious change in his social skills and ability to work once he'd got hooked on drinking it.

Red Bull is banned in France, for a very good reason. Personally I think every single one of this type of drink should be banned everywhere.

Pussy is an energy drink made with natural ingredients. I like it, it's fruity and refreshing. I rarely drink energy drinks, only ones i ever really drink are Lucozade sport & pussy.

I quite liked the taste but hey ho.

this was my last haul from american soda, the big cans are the AMP stuff made by pepsico IIRC,

It's a can full of liquid sugar how is it even legal to sell them?!

When virgin had their drinks company they had one of the first energy drinks called 'NRG' (I think that's what it was called...). Well, at my dads work (Virgin) they used to get these all for free. A mate of my dad drank these daily and ended up with heart problems from drinking so many!

The bit I disagree with is banning stuff completely, surely its a choice?
Water is harmful if you drink too much of it, what needs to happen is preventing the idiots that drink it all the time and become dependant on it. education is perhaps needed.

I've often wondered for things like this, substances which aren't technically bad for you but fall into that grey area of not particularly good for you. Could they not be rationed? so like war time, you have a certain quota you can purchase. I'd not be against metering of it, but blanket bans are a dangerous thing I think. (all IMHO of course)

I love Relentless personally. I sometimes have a can in a pint glass with loads of ice. It lasts me a good hour or so.

I sometimes have one on a weekend as I am pretty much Tea-total.

The thought of having them banned makes me want to shout "Freeedom!!"

Energy drinks you might in a Supermarket, Either the Blue Powerade, or Lucozade or Lucozade Sport.

But I'd never take them on one of the big cycle rides I do as they are all far to sweet and they arent as effective as some of the Science in Sport, Zipvit or the Nuun drinks that I have used in my waterbottles on my pushbike when out on a big ride.

Monster, Relentless leave a nasty after taste and Red Bull to me smells of sick. Yuck...

I occasionally drink a couple of cans of red bull on nightshifts. I have to drink them early on though, before 3am or otherwise they make me feel sick. If I am really struggling, I will drink lucozade from 3 onwards. I don't think my body likes caffeine when I am really tired.

Mostly drink water. Have a can of Coke on occasion.
Energy drinks are bad. Known several mates who got hooked on them and had a time trying to quit.

Have a vodka redbull very occasionally, and once in a blue moon (usually while driving) might have one of the Rockstar Orange-coloured ones (can't think what the flavour is). Not that bothered otherwise.

I don't get these people who get hooked on to this stuff, must be part of their personality.

I have a few cans in a night if I drinking Jager and sometime one, usually a rehab, if I am going on a long car journey. I regularly do 6 hour drives from Yarmouth to South Wales, so, helps in that respect.

But, to each their own.

I can see how it would be easy to come home feeling tired and think "man, I'll just have a red bull" and for it to become a habit.

Cymraeg_Atodeg
16-05-12, 08:00 AM
Maybe I am the oddity then. I come home tired everyday because I work hard! But, I never think, oh yeah, I'll have a can of Monster.

But, I know if I have any caffine past 3pm (mixed with alcohol not included) then I can't sleep, so, I don't even drink coffee after 3pm...

People can become addicted to almost anything. To me, it points to underlying problems with them more than anything.

I know a guy who drinks 15 cups of coffee a day. I know people who HAVE to have a 1 or 2 beers when they get home from work. Although that's better for you than binge drinking at the weekend, the fact that they have to have them, to me, means they have a problem.

A "new" study has said that drinking one or two beers a day is still as bad if not worse than binge drinking, it just effects you rather than destroys city centres on a Friday/Saturday night...

As for the topic, I avoid energy drinks like the plague having spent 48hrs awake in Prague once having discovered redbull and vodka.

Kids drink them because they think it's cool and/or their mates do. We don't let our daughter have them often as she gets quite hyper on them but as she goes out more unsupervised goodness knows how many she has when we cannot see...

I rather think a lot of adults belive they need them, based on a sugar rush they had once. The advertising BS does not help of course.

They are over-priced and have dubious benefits alongside a lot of downsides if you're not burning the ridiculous amount of calories off. I personally avoid them entirely.
