Anyone familiar with air box design with regards to flow rates and dynamic flow such as both the kinetic energy and resonant pulses and such lark?

I got my hands on a 98-99 year model r1 air box to investigate and came across a modification by someone called Ivan that a lot of owners of this bike seem to go ahead with and enjoy the results from it...

I was dubious about the prospects of such a venture as it claimed extra flow at higher rpm and bhp gains. But you had to use Ivans $130.00 carb kit!

So I went and modified the box as suggested and put the box on a flow bench before and after and saw no change in flow whatsoever!

Any body have any ideas why this would be other than the fact that backyard modifications on heavily researched and developed OEM parts is a bit daft? Or is there some knowledge missing from my repertoire that would explain how this modification would work but not improve flow on the flow bench?
