View Full Version : How much post goes missing?

<rant>

I can only account for post I know I'm expecting, but its too much.
Now curiously we dont get a delivery on Mondays, but one of the posties I asked said they are too busy.
Over christmas I missed one important card, since then a credit card and an ebay parcel that I supposedly signed for. (not my sig, but hey you cant argue that with them - its proof as far as they are concerned).

Now once upon a time there were two deliveries a day, and first class always arrived next day; now it seems there is one sometime in the day if you are lucky.

I've also filled in and sent off the form to ask them to stop shovelling **** maildrops through my door, but that made no difference.

Post - Aaaaaaarrrrggggghhhhh!

As for the original question, if my recent communication with the DVLA is anything to go by, then the answer is: All of it.

I have family members who work in the Royal Mail, from what they tell me, I'm surprised anything gets delivered at all, let alone to the right people in a reasonable timeframe.

Funny you should ask!!

After posting 4 items sold on ebay over 2 days:

-> 2 of the items (sent first class) made it to their destination next day
-> 1 sent first class recorded delivery took about a week
-> 1 has still not been received - nearly 2 weeks later (also sent first class)

So at the moment I am not happy with RM, will most definitely be claiming compensation from them

Generally not had much of a problem. I think perhaps it's luck of the draw with how many incompetent/scallywag mail sorters/postmen are on your route. I think I've been quite lucky with where I've lived.

Look on the bright side though. Their vans are red. Red is a nice colour.

I had two parcels delivered on the same day by two different vans. No wonder they had to increase postage costs.

My new documents for my car insurance have been sent twice now, neither have arrived.

I bought some handmade fridge magnets from a friend who's an artist, as a gift for Mrs Metal. Two sets never arrived, the friend offered to send a third but I politely declined saying we're both being screwed over by Royal Mail.

What can I do? Can I go down to the local place where I have to collect special delivery packages and ask?

joined blockbuster about 6 months ago and ordered 1 dvd. 2 weeks later and it hadnt turned up so i rang em and bolloked em and cancelled with a refund.

2 months later we get an RM headed letter explaining how one of the posties has been hoarding the post and would i accept their sincere apologies, along with said missing dvd in the evenlope! tut tut.

I dnt use RM to post anything bigger than a letter, we are lucky to get a delivery at all most days then one days you get tonnes all at once.

I have sent several letters 1st class which have taken 3days+ to get to their destination. Makes you wonder what we pay for.

We actually collect the work post from the post office as it was never delivered before late morning, which made processing any orders tricky. This morning? "Oh, there is a new pair sorting it and it isn't ready yet." It never arrived. Neither did ours at home, sent from the same post office. Which would be ok if it didn't keep happening every few weeks.

It could be much worse. We could have to rely on citylink.....

Thanks for the reminder, I have just double checked the letter that I sent to DVLA containing my license (both paper and plastic) and my re-done medical (the doctor got it wrong), just to discover that even though I sent it from the Post Office on Thursday and paid £5.90 to get guaranteed delivery for Friday apparently the system cannot trace it at present. They had better not have lost all of my stuff, it is a nightmare to replace, at least I have full copies, I just want them to get on with it so I can hurry up and start my HGV lessons.

I worked in the sorting office one holiday from Uni. The piles of shredded stuff that came out of the sorting machines was shocking. The number of Christmas cards with cheques etc inside them that never made it to their destination would have kept the complaints department busy until August.
And the bu99ers lost my passport application forms, including my full birth certificate, and cheque. I sent it special delivery but they didn't want to know about it. I was told to fill in a compensation form but they only offered to repay the postage costs. I wonder if there is a passport clone of me somewhere?

I suppose what you have to ask is, what percentage of items received by RM are delivered correctly. They must have a target, albeit a low one, but with the millions of items per day handled, even a very efficient system will loose hundreds of letters. Same with the sorting machines shredding stuff. I used to work in a pro photo lab back in the time of film and the machines would chew up a film every now and then. It's inevitable, nothing is 100% perfect.

The one thing that grinds my nerves though is the postman we have at the moment. He just shoves the letters into the letterbox, folded and screwed up! Then walks across my front garden and hops over the fence, rather than down the drive. Thing is, you just know if I challenge him, loads of post will never arrive.

There was a TV insider show a while ago about the RM. The phrase "pay peanuts, get monkeys" came to mind.

ignorance may be bliss especially as there's not a lot you can do about it. Even the couriers are sorted by hand much to my dismay with parcel farce.
My package ended up at another address with a new label on it even though the old one was still on it.
Personally I'd pay them in bananas and get better quality monkeys :) The other thing is its not exactly cheap to send via royal mail so like with all things related to the government you pay more for less until they privatise it, in which case you get to pay even more for slightly better.

Actually I think the target is well over 98% and they allegedly meet it, although I'm not sure how they can count what they've lost unless someone complains.

My City Link guy is far more reliable than the postie

Any small EBAY sales I do are ALWAYS sent recorded, makes claiming simpler

But I agree with BP, for the amount of stuff they deliver there's always going to be stuff that goes astray

That's really low when you think about it. If you get 3 letters a day of various kinds of junk, that's almost 1 letter lost per house every 2 weeks. :smt072

The worst ones are soggy letters that have the seems ripped from turning to mush!
One of ours is so lazy. We have a gate seperating us from next door, but it hasn't been used in the 12 years I've lived here, so we've tied it up to stop the postmen using it......they rip off the ties, when its far easier just to walk round the wall to next door!

I regularly get mail for a woman on the next street up......since when is her address the same as mine? The only thing the same is the house number!

WELL over 98%, I cant remember what it was but it was like 99.99% or something, Didnt want to commit to a figure since I heard it last year.

Sounds about right.

RM is reliable at work, Guaranteed before Noon. Should become slightly better again as there a paid morning delivery coming in.

Citylink, always there in the morning (paid internal post carrier) and the afternoon. UPS are spot on, Fedex and APC we have to duck the flying deliveries normally

Not just us then. Although it's often not even the same number half the time! Got rather worried lat week when this happened yet again while I was waiting for a cash card, a replacement fuel card and a GCSE revision book for the small person that seems to be living in my house. Next door is currently unoccupied and if stuff goes there in error we will not likely get it for weeks or even months.

Seems not, although, thankfully my neighbours have me living next door as I have had their mail in the past too....no good putting it through an empty houses letterbox.....just read the damn names and numbers, its not exactly difficult!!

Our Monday post arrived at work at 4.40 this afternoon (Tuesday), new postman apparently. Sending recorded delivery does not help either, my driving license has apparently arrived at DLVA, but I had to phone to check because the internet check could not find it, the Post Office man on the phone was very helpful though.

It is now possible that a university acceptance letter was never delivered either. :smt093
