Hi guys.
Gonna do engine respray in situ on my curvy sv650s.
Does anyone know of a DIY guide or walk through type thing?
Looks a tad shoddy at min.

Good luck with that. What colour codes have you got ready? Can't wait for the finished results.

Many painstaking hours of de-greasing and removal of corrosion, followed by some heat resistant paint.

Don't do it in situ, you won't get the coverage right and the chances of you painting everything else is very high. Take the engine out of the frame, its not to difficult to do, its something I've done more than once...
As for a walk through, TamSV did a fantastic job with his SV where he also painted the engine. Hopefully his thread (http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=153421) will be of some use to you.

Definitely drop it out. If you can't get it back together in time for silverstone, postpone until you're back!

Rob and I have done this before.
You need to drop the lump out, get a stiff brush (careful of any magnesium casings) give it a good good scrub blow any loose crud off with an air line, blater in degreasent and any cleaning agents you can get your mits on and repeat the above a couple of times over.
Once completed get your self some PJ1 High Temp paint. The stuff is amazing, just start spraying. no need to prime or laquer just get on with it and layer it as many times as you like. Only takes 2hrs between coats so you can leave it poised ready to be painted and just keep popping out to it ever couple hours to add a layer.
I did about 4 coats on robs motor and it looked fine, then just used what I had to finish the can for the sake of it. That all help up brilliantly!
Then once done pop it back in the bike, if you drop and clean the motor Friday night you could have it back in again Sunday night.

I used the PJ1 on my RHS crankcase and clutch covers....I baked them in the oven after they'd had 24hrs drying time (as per instructions) and after a few weeks, I used some brake cleaner on a rag to clean off some oil residue and the paint wiped straight off.

Im going to have a look see tonight to see what needs taking off to drop engine out. i have limited budget (ie none) no paddock stands or jack and limited tools.
I was only planning giving bit paint to tidy it up a little bit rather than how it looks now as its fully faired anyway.
My mate has a tin of brush on paint i can use he said is that stuff anygood? He did his car engine with it

ordered brush on gunk. Tin of 500ml £5.75 delivered.
So tonights plan is strip off all fairing and the tank and see what needs taking off to drop/lower engine and have a go with wire brush and wire brush wheels. The fairing holder i can prob paint tonight i reckon.
Please people bare in mind this is not a lush repsray anyone would be proud of its just a touch up/bodge it haha

Is Hammerite heatproof enough? Mine looks a lot like the OP's at the moment (except for the blue fairings, obviously) and I'm in a similar position with workshop facilities (space, but limited tools) so I'll keep watching this thread for ideas.

Last night attempts were cut short as I felt bad using mains drill ad wire brush after 8 so finished grinding at 8. Got the fairing holder done though. http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x412/chuck43vrs/9fe84dff.jpg
Tonight I plan to hit the engine

Still waiting on gunk to arrive, hopefully get time in the garage tonight depending on the look i get from the mrs lol!
Rear paddock stand turned up at least, so might take rear wheel out and clean swing arm! I tried cleaning it while back with wheel cleaner and its a SH!T state now!! Looks dreadful. See how it goes, i grab few pics later

That chains pretty rusty on the links too. A good soak in cleaner and a scrub to get rid of corrosion before you literally spray a WHOLE CAN of lube on it to try and bring it back to life wouldnt go a miss :)
Ive said it a few times to remove the sprocket cover and be suprised at the amount of crud that collects there. Im suprised you didnt have gear change issues. It's worth taking off the gear change worm & remove the clutch rod, if it's covered in muck it may not be working to it's best potential. Youll get in about it all better to clean that whole area and theres a thread for adjusting it when you put it back together.

Would it be OK to soak in gunk?
How do you guys clean off gunk? Its just that in my area, We have a S**TY hose pipe ban. Even though i use less water washing car using hose than i do buckets (by a long way). Should get gunk next week so will start painting that stuff on. Was thinking just to sponge it off i guess. Hoping it arrives my work on Wednesday.
Also recommendations on chain lube?

Theres a thread for free chain lube atm. Or you could by a oiler. You could soak it in gunk no probs. Soaked rags wrapped round overnight?
