Eyup folks, just picked up a k5 drz 400 sm and thought I may aswell share a pic or 2, its done approx 9000 miles, couple month tax and mot left, FMF pipe, Heated grips and I think thats about it.

Bad bits are it needs new indys and relay as current ones are flashing a bit quick but sounds like Mr Owenski has got that covered, looks like switch for brake light from front brake might be dodgy as it doesnt illuminate the brake light but the rear brake does, End of the silencer has snapped off at some point and the guys used self tappers to bodge it back on so ill have a look at sorting that and in need of a general tidy up.

Nice, I really fancy a Supermoto. Just can't think what I would use it for though. Enjoy.

Looks fun :D

What's the fuel range like on them? Can you get bigger tanks?

Owenski
02-06-12, 05:11 PM
You get about 90 until reserve and about 20 on reserve and costing around £10 to fill the tank. 3 main types of aftermarket tank available the nicest of which is like hens teeth over here in the uk but the 2nd choice is a Clarke tank and that's about a third additional capacity.

Loads and loads of modding options for em but as always I'd suggest finding the most standard version as possible unless its been really well done.

Whatever you do, do NOT talk to owenski about DRZs. You will be forever poor, and in the garage.

Nice, S or E version wouldve been better though IMO, could go green laning on it too then :)

I love mine, dropped it twice today though ;)

I was thinking that for a bit of light green laning get some dual purpose tyres? itll be used mainly on road anyway I reckon thats why I went SM, just need to go play now but i dont fancy getting wet

Yeh, ive heard a rumour or two that he's a bit obsessive on the drz front  but at least if it all goes wrong I know where he lives

What have you done to yours so far then MR owenski, just out of curiosity, And same question to you Mr specialone. This things in need of a general tidy up and then it might get to the playing about stage but not sure what to do with it, need to have a good read up on thumper talk I reckon.

Cheers

Erm well I totally dismantled mine because the previous owner made a hash of it. I then bought another road legal one and a few off road ones to use for more parts, I've now got 2 complete bikes. Although only One is in full working order and I'm using everyday the other is in various bits split between the powder coasters and been boxed up In my cellar.

I haven't done much to mine tbh, tidied up some worm frame paint, mini serviced regular etc.
Fitted an in line fuel filter, rear rack, 12v socket, oem hand guards and a scorpion end can is about it, most of my time on it has been riding or cleaning it after getting muddy :)

Ive just remembered that theres no key for the steering lock, are they a pain to change without the key etc? and i might invest in a rear rack jobby eventually and some hand guards. main thing is indys now and relay for them but all in good time I supose.

I wouldnt worry about the steering lock, hardly robust tbh, with that much leverage on the bars, im sure you could snap it easy anyway.

There's a rear rack on ebay atm for £15 BIN btw.

Phils right steering lock is next to useless on these.
Mods wise there is a common one you can do which don't cost a penny but chances are your previous owner already did this.
Then there are 2 carb mods options one which cost no more than £50 and gives a couple of extra bhp or a £250-£300 option which adds around 7bhp which is quite a lot on a bike with only 34bhp to begin with.

FYI Im free Wednesday night this week Danny if you wanna pop up on it an I'll give it a look over properly.

Enduro carb and FCR carbs?

Owenski
05-06-12, 06:10 PM
Yeah standard SM carb is the same as in the S model. Its a CV unit with much lower jetting than is possible. Quick jet switch and cut a hole in the air box and you're laughing (jets come in a kit for £30 plus USA shipping). The rest is free and easy.
The bigger more expensive mod is the FCR it's standard on the E model but again even the standard E model carb is down jetted from what's achievable. 2nd hand can be found around £150 area but new mine was £330 inc shipping.

Couple of mods to do for the stock CV though ( there in my dr350 build ) is cut a coil from the slider spring and a small hole enlargement to improve throttle response, but the 3x3 airbox, bigger jets, good filter and move the needle up a notch make a hell of a difference.

Been looking at the fcr jobbys, might be a week or 2 before im venturing sown that route :), also been looking at the jet kits and 3 x 3 mod, think ill make a bit of a list of all the necessities and then get them over a bit of time and see how we go, Went out on monday with the future father in law and noticed the rear sprocket on mines a fair bit larger than his (also a drz owner) so flat out were at 85mph, although the acceleration is better than his, and the front comes up a bit easier I dont know if it would be better to have stock gearing just for a slightly higher cruising speed? suppose its all about playing around to set it up how you like over a fair bit of time but so far im rather liking the different riding style.

I think stock gearing is 14/44 Im running 15/39 with no power issues, yeah it take a bit of a tug and sitting quite far back for it to lift but its still far easier than the SV was.
I can help you out with the prices for stuff, well I can tell you pretty much what ever mod has cost me and I can tell you which ones I thought were worth it against those that I'd have been happier keeping the cash in my pocket on.

Loony machine, never filtered through Edinburgh traffic like such an idiot, as I did when riding one of these! Then did about 5 laps of this road at full pelt!

so..... fcr, 3x3 mod, pair removal, owenskis coil pack, indys and relay, exhaust, brake light switch, handguards, manual CCT, big super service in next 1000 miles...... remind me not to go visiting mr owenski in future... and aparently these things are cheap to run  . Cheers for the advice mr owenski, much appreciated, now just to put the simple stuff into practice before you get the crappy jobs :D.

Cheers again
