Ladies and gentlemen, I currently have the opportunity to either swap my curvy SV or buy as a second bike a 1998 ZX6r with 19k on the clock. The asking price for the bike is £1695. the bike at first glance appears to be extremely clean bar a couple of chips on the green powder coat on the wheels (careless tyre fitters), nothing too serious at all. Given its age my first thoughts were that it is probably about £300 to £400 overpriced. So do you think I should walk away?

Truth is I love my 2002 curvy. It always puts a huge smile on my face and I really don't think I should be going backwards on age. I have no Kwak experience so what do you guys think?

Thanks.

Can't help re price but it surely would be an upgrade. ZX has better suspension, brakes and its probable as nible as sv. Not to mention more power :). All depends what you need it for (You would probable prefer sv over zx for commuting). Also depends how its been looked after.

ps green ones looks brilliant as well

It is green and looks lovely. As far as usage, It's just a weekend toy.

kawk xz6/zx9 are bombproof engine. I had a curvy for a year, then a 2000 plate zx9r for the last few only sold due to unable to get on it and to enjoy it was warp factor five.

You think the sv puts a smile on your face test the zx6 will be grin.

I've got a '98 ZX6-R, (green, obviously), and have had it from new, despite my being heavily biased towards the ownership of such a motorcycle, for the money you mention it would have to absolutely perfect, and even then it isn't cheap. And I really mean perfect, with absolutely nothing not even a penny needing spent for some time.

Are you sure the wheels have been powdercoated? As standard they're not and the paint is extremely fragile, (the overwhelming majority of tyre fitters are well aware of the fragility of much Japanese wheel paint, act accordingly and are very rarely 'careless'). If the wheels have definitely been powdercoated then check them very carefully for bearing fit and softening of the metal, it's really not a good idea with those wheels. 19,000 miles in fourteen years is very little, this means it's sat around for lengthy periods or done lots of short journeys - neither is good.

Check the front calipers for wear, (the bodies notch where the pads sit), the disc thickness, and the bearings in the rear suspension linkage for wear, the gear linkage rose joints for looseness in the lever where peened in, the gear lever bush for wear that makes the lever floppy, and that the clutch takes up the drive cleanly when engine is very hot, if it judders there are a number of areas where wear can occur. And as it's stood unused for long periods then the rubber bits everywhere need a good look for drying out and cracks.

£1700 is way OTT for that age of bike.

Cheers fellas. Thanks for your input, I really appreciate it. Having slept on it I have made the decision to keep my SV. I really enjoy my curvy and as much as would like a sportier bike the SV ticks all the boxes in my list of expectations. I'll continue to save my pennies and perhaps in the future I'll look at a newer bike and maybe still keep my curvy as well. Just for a change I've allowed my head to rule over my heart. Thanks again.:smt023

They made almost same bike right up to 2002 or something, and they are actually pretty good useable sports bikes.

Plenty of them about for decent money since all the fashion ponces want the new rock hard anal destruction kawas with with fuel injection and rubbish rear suspension.

So good that I've kept mine for fourteen years, despite having ridden many many more recent bikes none has convinced me the extra ability is worth either the cost of buying or running one, or the loss of comfort and usability that goes with the newer bikes.

And no-one should think it will be outclassed on your trackdays either - that's still down to whoever is riding it. In the right hands, (manifestly not mine obviously), it'll still be in the quick set.

mine is nicer than yrs :) it was also a steal for the price i got it

G should be under 1500
J should be under 2000 or around
A1P up to around 2500 for a minter and low millage, these are the most expensive due to their limited production run but you will be stung for additional road tax and insurance

I'd say its overpriced.. I've just spent the last week looking at loads of these to buy one and I eneded up with a zx636 A1P 2002 for £1300 with 25k on the clock. For about £500 more I could of ended up with a j1/j2 zx6r or a1p 636 with anything between 8000-14000 miles on it.

Again, thank you for the replies fellas. I went to view the bike on Tuesday, having seen it in the flesh I made the decision to walk away based on Sid Squids comments regarding condition versus price. Certainly from the photos I'd seen of the bike it had definitley had the "cleaning" camera on it because it looked mint. In he flesh it looked well errrr......worn shall we say. Certainly rough in places and looking like it's spent a lot of time living outside. I commented that I thought the price had a lot of room for negotiation but was told that the bike had been sold on Saturday, which came as a surprise given that this dealer had in fact been closed all weekend!!!!! I kind of got the impression that this dealer didn't want to sell me this bike.

Any ways, no skin off my nose, I enjoy my SV and will keep it for another year or so whilst I continue to save my pennies. I'll eventually get a newer bike, maybe even a spanker, not sure what yet but I like the Daytona 675 and the Gixxer 750. We'll see what happens. Suffice to say I'll probably go to a different dealer!

Yes, of course, since you painted it green it's much nicer than mine.

Oh, wait... it's still red isn't it?

Fail.
