i) Does anyone know where I can buy an inflatable mattress (Daddyjob has one but didn't know where from exactly) that's split into tubes that are all individually valved / pumped up. Thus you can choose your firmness and if you have a puncture you just lose one segment.

ii) Then as a consideration, anyone had any experience of joined up sleeping bags? Do they work well or do they zip up like crap and thus you should have bought a double in the first place?

Stenno, i think the one i have is this: http://www.blacks.co.uk/camping/product/096561/CAMPER-AIR.html?attribute=4812663
And i'm not sure we discussed sleeping together at the next AR yet

Zip together mummy shaped ones are rubbish. No room to move about. Next year I'm taking the duck down feather duvet and pillows. Maybe just bungee my memory foam mattress to the bike too.

I'm going to buy a camping stove. It was lovely of my mum to bring me coffee from home but I can't take her to every AR.

LPH, i'd recommend one of these http://direct.asda.com/Asda-Portable-Gas-Stove/000943121,default,pd.html smaller than the usual stove size and very useful

No need, I just put something in the loft and found my gas lamp and stove under the 4th tent! My loft is like a branch of Blacks.

Also in the box, photos of me with black hair and a ring through my nose.

Stenno as LPH said the mummy ones are rubbish and some of them you cant even zip together. I had my Superlight mummy with me and I couldn't even do it up round my shoulders hence freezing at night. Last year I bought a standard rectangular one for my lady and I think two of those you could zip together. But they are a bit more bulky and therefore take more space on the bike. But last year she was warm and I wasn't :).

As for the mattress I've got an inflatable double size one with integral pump but you need mains to inflate it and it's big when packed and heavy so it's an option when you have a "support car". But the one you mean I'm sure you can get in Argos, Homebase or any store that sells holiday equipment. I've seen the one you want as a beach inflatable thing.

Since I'm like a hobbit and can't go with only one breakfast and even more I'm the can't-function-without-a-morning-coffee person I think I need to invest in some sort of camping cooking equipment. Just a few quid in Halfords for a tiny stove but what a difference it makes. Then I won't have to bother Rictus in the morning although it does save him the hassle of having to go for water ;)

I was thinking the same thing stove wise, the wakeing up to tea drinking time was simply unacceptable.

:D

I third the stove! Absolutely gagging for a brew in the morning, and when we got one, it was minuscule. I am a half pint brew type of guy.

Also, a new tent I think. Once again I got away with it, but it's only a matter of time before it rains and I drown in my sleep.

You could always hire my mum as tea maker for the weekend. She turned up with stove, kettle, tea, coffee, hot chocolate and Penguin biscuits. Result.

+1 the stove, if not for a heater if it does get cold.

Saying that I try not to camp anyway. However I kind of forgot about the AR til the day before so I had no choice :D

That could work in heating department but you might wanna be careful using it inside the tent.

This could be handy as well. We could fill it up with beer and place in the middle of the field :) . 25 litres should work nicely

Not quite, yours had a valve on every tube, that one is a single. Maybe just put yours on eBay and let me know! :p

I almost brought a stove for tea but it came down to lack of space again. As for keeping warm, be careful with using heaters in tents, I keep reading about people dying whilst camping due to carbon monoxide poisoning!

Oh and thanks for all the advice on sleeping bags, I've gone right off the idea despite it sounding romantic. Might try one of those 'pod' sleeping bags, more room albeit bulky for travel.

For a sleeping bag, I can't recomend Snugpak highly enough.
I have a Softie 10 and it was possibly a bit too warm. I reckon a Softie 6 would be ample. I had one years ago and found it excellent.
They are fairly lightweight and pack down small using the compression sacks.

The small propane gas stoves are brilliant for tea and hot dog heating.
Fold small with a mess tin and a set of clip together utensils its all you need.
3 season sleeping bag + a liner. fleece suffer in the bags sack as your pillow .
Wool hat .if you get cold put the fleece on.
Self inflating roll mats.as your lucky if an air bed stays puncture proof.
And lots of bin bags.

As for making a cuppa tea, anyone had any experience with the small solid fuel burners? http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=solid+fuel+camping+burner&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.,cf.osb&biw=1600&bih=1012&wrapid=tlif133951939543410&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=rHHXT_qOJMO_8wPgwq2oAw
Can imagine they take a long time to heat water compared to gas burners?

You mean Ape Face, my sis. Well she has a full bike licence obtained at 18. And never used since.

Only a matter of time before little menace James steals one of the bikes out of my garage after he's finished smashing up his own one.

They do serve a purpose.
When I was in the RAF it was always handy having some of these in the Bergen in case the gas ran out. OK, they take a while to boil a pan of water but they do.

hexy burners, work great but mess up your pan or whatever you place on the top of it, gas all the way, we have one of these, http://www.winfieldsoutdoors.co.uk/vango-folding-gas-stove.html brill take up hardly any room.

I never go camping even for one night without the means of constructing a cup of tea/coffee. My weapon choice is a very old Camping Gaz butane stove, boils my kettle very quickly, is not bulky and is cheap to run.

This:
http://www-cira.tees.ac.uk/scouts/wilton/scouts/kbase/stove1.gif
Is very similar.
I reckon a Softie 6 would be ample. I had one years ago and found it excellent.
That's what I've got, perfect for this weekend's temperature and packs very small.

Next time I need to remember to pack the bum warmers. Luckily Numbers had a spare pack. Of course most people call them hand warmers, but always have warm hands and a chilly bottom. Weird.

excellent stoves, very light.

RAF and Bergen. Not 2 words I imagined hearing in the same sentence lol

I use a product called a Jetboil. Expensive but boils a litre in 2 minutes

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Jetboil-FLASH-CBN-Flash-Cooking-System-Carbon/dp/B002N18PHO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1339697953&sr=8-1

Packs down into itself so is only the size of the cup. Won't cook sausages but heats up boil in the bag food pretty quickly lol

FG1
14-06-12, 06:31 PM
I can use them in the same sentence because I was on TSW when I was a regular and then RAF Regiment as an auxilliary.
And let's be honest, as a supplier I did have a slight advantage when it came to obtaining kit ... ;)
