View Full Version : Whrring noise with throttle use - Pointy.

I'm the proud new owner of a 2007 SV650S, which although is used, only has 1800 kms on it. I know these bikes have some strange noises, but I'd rather know for sure that the whirring noise mine makes isn't something to be concerned about.

I believe the chain has the right amount of tension, but it makes a definite whirring sound when I pull on the throttle in any gear. When I ease off, the noise quiets. When I disengage the clutch and pull the throttle, there is no noise.

I guess I've basically boiled it down to something relating to chain or gearbox. Anyone have any ideas if this is normal? Should I be checking sprockets? Chain and sprockets are well lubricated and look like new... maybe I'm paranoid.

Any insights would be appreciated!

(Originally thought it was the fuel pump whirring, but since it stops with clutch, that can't be it..)

Check the chain tension, ensure the chain is lubricated. Generally a loud chain noise indicates it being overly tight.

Alternatively: Fit a louder exhaust.

Chain is lubricated, sprockets look fine.

I did loosen the chain slightly, because I think it was a bit tight (it's now at an 1" slack), and made sure to align the rear wheel properly. When I spin the wheel in neutral on the stand, it does seem to be a bit less noisy, and for the rest, maybe I'm just paranoid.

Thanks for the advice.

Check the chaain tension along it's whole length, as you may have a tight spot. Mine did as it wore and it used to make a right racket, but stopped when I enaged the clutch! All fine when I replaced the chain & sprockets.

I get a *whirring noise* aswell, same as you'v described...
(ridden private land of course)

It works so iv never thought bad of it.

(mine comes from the engine, no pun intended.)

Come to think of it my dads Vauxhall Astra 1.8 petrol(no turbo) makes a whirring noise - sounds like air brakes, he loves it aha - I know its no help but still.. maybe its just how it is - Fingers Crossed :thumleft:

Hmm.. took it for a quick test drive today and noticed the noise is most pronounced at about 3-4000 rpm under load (stops when easing off throttle).

Seems to be coming from gearbox/front sprocket.

No tight spots in chain or concerns noticeable with sprockets, so I'm left to assume it's just a normal gearbox noise and that I need an louder exhaust :P

I hope.

Front sprocket cover off & check for gungy dirt to be removed!

Oil and filter changed a few days ago, just in case. The cover at the front sprocket is clean, and there's no gunk anywhere along the chain. I completely cleaned the chain today and re-lubed, but haven't ridden since.

I'm beginning to think it must just be normal chain noise, but I can't really understand why it only makes the whizzing/whirring noise under load (when pulling the throttle) and around 3-4000 rpm. A good description of the noise would actually be a dirty/worn bearing, but I cannot feel any play anywhere, and this bike has so few kms (1800), that I doubt it would be that.

Can anyone share their experience with "normal" chain/sprocket noise? Besides a 250 dual sport, this is really my first bike, and I've heard these do make some funny noises...

if your bike is indeed a K7 then it will be a twin spark and do indeed sound slightly different than the older models. mines makes a 'whirring' noise on load and steady throttle. but like all SVs there is the sound of the back torque from the clutch if you don't match the revs when shifting down.

I don't notice anything on downshifts, only really notice it when I'm riding steady at around 3500-4500rpm. If I ease off the throttle even slightly, it goes away.

I guess I could take my chain off the sprocket, run it, and see if I can isolate the noise to the clutch/transmission, or if it's chain/sprocket.

I remember when mine was new, there was a whirring to it, which came from the gearbox, and stops after a while, i'm guessing as the gears wear a little.
As yours is very low mileage, this might be it.

Well, despite my better judgment, I took the chain off the front sprocket and removed it to hear it run without the chain. Although I did hear a bit of internal ticking, there wasn't much else, so I can only surmise that the noise I was hearing was probably just the chain running along the chain guide and going over the front sprocket.

Of course, now I'm mad at myself for putting a scratch in my clutch cover with the clutch linkage as I was working down there. :/

its probably just gear whine, as bikes have straight cut gears.

I spent a year trying to cure what I thought was fairing or oil cooler cover buzz on my K8, until I realised that it was coming from the front sprocket under load.

Vigorous cleaning/lubricating failed to help and I eventually filed it under "they all do that, Sir".

I'm trying to convince myself that I like the sound, lol.
