Right, I've convinced the missus we need a new tv so we are potentially looking at joining the ranks of the local drug dealers and getting a flat screen. However I no nothing about these led, lcd, plasma etc.

So what do I need? And its also got to come from Tesco. Budget of about 400 quid.

What size do you want?

Are you planning on wall mounting it (allow at least £100 for that)?

How many inputs of which types do you need for Sky/Cable/DVD/VCR/PS1/PS2/PS3/Xbox/Wii etc

£100 for mounting?

Go on ebay and get an identical bracket to the official one for £16 or so.

Ebuyer do some good deals. Full HD 1080p is a must. For your budget you're on the cusp of 3D but I wouldn't bother personally.

Has to be from Tesco.

It will sit in the corner of a room so no wall mounts. Looking at Wii, dvd and an old vhs for plugging in.

Ive recently just bought a 3d panasonic veira smart led tv, in one word AWESOME :)
Got my sky hd box yesterday and the clarity is much better than expected.

I'd avoid plasmas IMO, old tech now, I haven't seen a single plasma tv that is anywhere near as sharp as my one.

LCD or even better LED, the latter being much thinner and more energy efficient.

Brands, panasonic, Sony or samsung are the only ones I'd buy.

Finally, look for the highest Hz rating, when I was looking, I was amazed at how this massively affected picture quality, my tv is 400hz I think and like I said quality is awesome.

LED backlit if you can andy, superbright. If you're getting it from tesco it'll definitely be worth your while seeing what brands tesco carries, then go see it in the shop (or if they don't have it in the shop go to curries/comet to see the same model) to see what you think of the design & the image quality.

Have a look at the inputs on the back as well - HDMI, composite, scart, vga, phono (aka RCA) etc. you don't want to have to be swapping wires around everytime you wanna play on the wii or watch a dvd simply because it has one too few inputs.

I have a backlit LED Panasonic Viera Smart TV as Specialone say they are awesome.

I got a slim bracket from Ebay for £12.95 made from very thick steel and has 6 massive bolts that go through the wall, solid as a rock. Genuine Panasonic one was ridiculous price for what it is.

It's a 42" btw

Glad to hear it - my research is obviously out of date.

Screwfix also sell wall brackets way cheaper than tv shops.

The smart tv stuff is awesome, watching YouTube vids on 47 inches is nice :)

Find it at Tesco, see if John Lewis also sell the same one, then get it from John Lewis.

Better guarantees/warranties and they will Price Match, ah, and deliver.

Check out Richer Sound too. If nothing else their 5 yr warranties are a bargain. I found that as you move down in price you loose Hz and inputs. These days I recon you need at least 3xhdmi but many still just have 1 or 2.

One thing I will say is that just about every hotel room, bar and office I visit has Samsung so must say something for the VFM.

I have a 5 yr old Samsung and a new LG both perfectly good enough. When I shopped about and got the LG I found that viewing angle (how far off centre you can be before the pic turns bad) varied wildly by model which may be a significant consideration depending on where you all plan to sit to watch it.

Once you got out of the no-name really cheap stuff I couldn't see much difference in the overall picture quality.

Audio quality also varied but these days you can get a quite reasonable blue-ray/dvd/cd/DAB/surround sound box for a couple of hundred quid and some even have the smart apps in them so you can youtube and iplay through them rather than having to splash out on a smart TV.

Not getting the "But dear, John Lewis do a better deal, I guess those Tesco Vouchers will just have to go on beer" thing, are you?

Mark_h

Thing with Tesco vouchers is you get far better value spending them on days out that you do spending them in the shop. Buy your TV elsewhere and convert your tesco vouchers to Alton towers, Pizza express etc and get 3-4 times their face value. This assumes they are rewards vouchers rather than a gift voucher.

When it comes to tellys, take what ever size you think you need then go for the next one up.

Otherwise you will regret not getting the bigger one

AndyBrad

That looks good but its smaller and more expensive than what I was hoping for.

If I don't use the vouchers I don't get the tv. Women's logic, don't question it.

My biggest concern is motion blur. What's the best for stopping that?

Either better refresh rate or don't watch stuff where things move too quick. That said mine are both 50/60 hz and I never notice any blurring at all.

And dispose of packaging before Mrs. comes home and tell her it's the next size down. she'll never measure it and never notice.

Because men have been telling women that 6" is really 9" for years?

Mines a 42" 100Hz Viera, don't notice motion blur at all, great for gaming. Which one were you looking at?

I agree with SK on the size thing tho, we went from 32" to 42" coz we thought it would be big enough, it looks small on the wall, i could easily have got a 50" for similar money.

Second that, the glasses and the tech are easier on the eyes and the new lg software makes it work in full hd.
