Shove a broom handle up to stop them spinning

Or if that doesn't work, a powered (air or electric) impact driver

Theres a way you can keep the fitted & use the axle rod to stop them from spinning to crack it. It's on my thread for overhauling them.

+1 for broom handle, or re install internals an put the tops back on...
The broom handle technique didn't work for me. I got a 12v impact wrench off eBay and it worked effortlessly. It has a lighter socket attachment too so it's in the car incase I get a flat. Not bad for £20 ish quid

The only thing I dont think anyone has mentioned about the broom handle is to chamfer the end a little so it wedges in. But eaiser to use an impact driver or drill with hammer action I found worked.

Ye always good saving a bit of cash , Just a little tip instead of using a broom handle try a 3/4" or 2 cm square piece of wood you will find all four corners will fit inside the top of the damper rod just tap it with a mallet and you will find theres less chance of it spinning. thanks again guys cheers Glen
