View Full Version : Kill switch backfires - what damage will it cause?

....... if when riding along and you flick the kill switch so the bike gives out an almighty backfire?
the reason i ask is one of my work colleagues admits to doing this and thinks its great fun!!!
didn't want to say anything but did ask him if it could cause damage and he wasn't sure?
any ideas oh mighty org?
Can't see it causing any issues, all it's doing is turning the engine off surely?

single biggest cause of reg/rec failures isn't it?

blows the wadding out the exhaust .... and if its a carbon can causes excessive heat which eventually will blow a hole in it

Good, innit. Some people need to grow up ( gracefully )
ps: better with carbed bikes.

Can blow the throttle bodies off and also set fire to your exhaust..my friend did just that luckily a very kind delivery truck driver stopped and put out the fire with his extinguisher.
I prefer stealth mode myself..

You sure the throttle bodys were seated properly. Never had a problem with any off my bikes

Joe,with all your experience I am not surprised, how many bikes?
Thats with your "OFF" bikes ,what about your staying on bikes.

I was under the impression it damages exhaust valves if done regularly?

Yes no reason for them not to have been customer brought the bike in with running issues and after some investigation and him admitting to being a regular kill switch abuser he found the cause, DL1000's are also common for blowing off throttle bodies from their seat and causing an air leak.
I just don't know what exactly you're talking about. Using the kill swith while riding? Like turn if off and on again? Or something else? Am lost.

never heard of this before but i have every intention to do it as i go home tonight
Oh OK, now I got it. Same as granty92, I've never heard about it. Although I saw some people do it when killing the engine after the ride (either on bikes as in cars) but I was told that this applies only for carburetted motors to empty the carburettors (have no idea if that is true or not) and ease the next start or so.

kill switch??? i speed up then slow down this is followed by nice big backfire
svracer i assume the sv thou would do the same as the dl1000 throwing the throttle bodies off

I love it . I did it 100 times in one day when i got bike . Was so addictive . I do it passed kids now and watch them poo there pants . Not as loud if u have bike restricted . But mine int so very loud . Love it :) . People in cars can do it but they have to key bash e.g turn keys on and off . But with kill switch is doesnt knacker ur key thing lol
pull off your PAIR tube from the front cylinder and it'll backfire hugely every time you roll off the throttle and your revs drop past about 5000rpm.
Or find a dealer who remembers to put your bike back together properly :smt013

What key? As long as the door lock fob is inside the car I ony have a button with "start" written on it.
All very childish and likely to yet again tar us with a very smelly brush.

This is infantile, idiotic, selfish and anti-social behaviour.
And I shall be trying it on the way home :p

Just hope your kill switch doesn't stick or it might be more than the engine you kill or damage.
i've heard it's much cooler if you do it whilst going round a corner ;)

Yup.
TBH there are far more fun things you can do on a bike that dont involve peeing off non biking members of the public and making them hate us even more than they do already.
As said stealth is the new loud.

It isn't.
and ease the next start or so.
No fuel will make starting much harder.

No it's to do with the fuel injection side of things I think, you have carburettors on your bike which when the engine is killed will keep chucking fuel through the system, when you restart it ignites the excess fuel/mix up the exhaust.
Not sure of the exact reason why it's harder/impossible on bikes with fuel injection (and throttle bodies) I imagine they cease injecting fuel when the engines killed.

? Fuel pump stops ?

? Fuel pump stops ?
Was thinking that, but thought the amount it must pump out it'd be too quick for it. And that the pump just gets the fuel to the injectors...I really don't know though we need one of the spanner wizards to comment.

Common sense would spoil the whole debate!
It lets the cylinders get a bt too much fuel in with out sparking and when you turn it back on it sorta bump starts itself as the engine is turning. Pises the fuel into exhaust where it ignites. Bit of childish thing to do. But fun every so often. Must have an effect on something but don't know what. Possible exhaust wear on the joints.

Carb models continue to draw the fuel through induction and injected models still have pressure to the injectors from the fuel pump, killing the ignition spark means that any fuel that is inducted and not ignited is pushed out into the exhaust system so that when you restart and the engine fires this fuel residue that is in the exhaust explodes-BANG.
What you are doing is putting an explosive mixture into the exhaust system and it can blow your exhaust to pieces as it is not really designed as a combustion chamber

I met a magazine journo who exploded the cans on an Aprillia Mille doing this. He'd spent the whole morning practising in tunnels and when it all went bang he'd thought he'd finally got the knack... :smt073
As punishment he was given a long term ZX6-R, which he promptly broke trying to do rolling stoppies during a rideout. After that he was only allowed to drive the coffee machine.
